Best Big Mountain/Powder Skis

Looking into some Big Mountain/Powder skis. I'm wanting around 105-115 mm waist. So far the best looking skis are J skis "the metal", Atomic "Backland FR", Prior, and Icelantic. I would love to hear some advice!

blizzard cochize maybe?? I had the 2015 jr version and they were amazing, im not that good at reviewing skis so just search that ski on google

How big are you? Where do you ski? What skis have you owned or ridden and what have you liked or disliked about them? More information is better when you're asking strangers on the internet to recommend a ski that will suit your needs.

I'm 5'9" 120 lbs. I'm used to CO snow but I'm going up to bozeman next year so I will be spending all my days at Bridger. I've Atomic Elysian skis (95 mm waist) which are a all-mountain powder ski. They are very fun skis and I love them, but they are hard to control in powder, steep runs, and especially cliffs. I've been putting in some research on reviews and they all look very nice, but I'm still not sure what would be best for Montana snow.

You did not just recommend soul 7s on this forum? Wow! I doubt amanda.w is a father of three who happens to be moving to Montana but would presume she? Is going to Montana state or whatever college is up there near Bridger.

Other recommendations are solid.

Not for bridger or any speeds... Tips will literally fold over if you try to power them too hard and chatter terribly in any chunder.

Back to the OP...
J Skis Metal is definately a good choice if you like stiff skis - Kartel 108s, Moment Meridians, and many other skis will fit into that category of "Big mtn charger with a playful side" - so therein lies the problem...

If I may ask, what skis are you coming off of right now? What size do you ride and what were your likes and dislikes with that ski? "Big Mountain/Powder skis ... around 105-115 mm waist" is a very VERY large category with skis nowadays. If you tell us about your personal riding style, previous experiences on different skis, and how you would like the new ski to perform then that would help us narrow down that search.
I too am going to Montana State next year so i've definitely been scanning for new skis and thinning my quiver of ones that I don't need.

Hoji's are worth taking a look at. I've been having so much fun on mine the past few weeks. Like to go fast and nimble too. 4ftnt makes a nice ski.

Liberty origin 106 or genesis 106 if you want something softer/prettier...

i'm assuming youre like me and are super slender/skinny (im 5'9 125lb)... the origin is plenty stiff for your body type. any other ski at that width with metal will be too burly for you, in my opinion.

My friend bought the Icelantic Oracle 88 and they look awesome, they aren't mounted yet but the build quality looks really nice, they're really light and I like the texture/finish on the topsheets.

+1 for going to MSU next year. I will be starting grad school there in the fall

I have been skiing on faction 3.0s which while they are fun they are pretty light and tend to get deflected a good bit. I have been looking at getting new pair of skis for powder/big mountain. And a couple brands that stood out in my research were Moment and ON3P. I demoed a pair of ON3P billy goats last year and they felt super solid/stable and build durability/construction seemed on point. So I would second the guy who mentioned ON3P earlier in the thread

For what it is a worth Giray Didali can't get over the 18/19 Vacation. I know it's slightly updated but not sure how. His latest IG posts tho profess his love for it. Of course he is on their team so take that w/ a grain of salt.

I am a big fella at 240LBS and I have seen some comments about some skis like the Cochise that shouldn't even be considered unless you are a pro level big mountain rider.

I will say that the Blizzard Rustler is a game changer for the brand because it is a ski that your average "good" person can manage and the best of the best will still enjoy them. They are more playful in the tip, poppy underfoot and still have a decent amount of stiffness in the tail without being overbearing and unwieldy.

The Blizzard Sheeva is basically the Women's version of the Rustler 11. It is just slightly lighter weight but it doesn't lack the power (Compared to it's Male version) like most Women's skis do.

Based on your weight and what you are looking for out of a ski, I think the Sheeva would be a nice upgrade and a good choice for the width of ski and terrain you will be skiing at Bridger.

Yeah but the masses have a lot more mass. OP is only 120lbs.

I agree but when I say that the skier needs to be a pro level big mountain rider, I am taking into account the fact that she is 120LBS. The cochise was marketed to advanced level adult male skiers who have some weight to throw them around. I am not saying that a 120LB skier couldn't handle these but they better know what they are doing.

It is a good ski for sure. Easy to wash out in the tail and a little soft for backseat landings in my opinion. Tough to say for sure because I am literally twice as heavy as the skier in question.

My lady friend rides these and she loves them though

If you want a badass ski that you can ride switch on, find a used pair of Nordica Helldorados.

They don't make them like they used to, folks.

Definitely consider the upcoming Moment Commander 108, it replaces the Tahoe series and gets tow sheets of metal. Directional and chargey but can still be thrown sideways and does great in the tight spaces. Sounds perfect for you. If you want something more playful and a twin then go Deathwish (112mm) or Bibby (116mm), Check the Commander 98 and 108 here: mmntskis.com

I had a pair of Metals and didn't love them. Just didn't suit my style of skiing, and I found they got thrown around a bit. I second the recommendation of the Commander 108 -- Moment makes some great skis (I have Bibbys for pow days). Another great ski is the Black Crows Corvus. Similar to the Commander with camber underfoot but no metal in it. I love mine and they charge!!
