you can throw autofocus out the window if you use a metabones, regardless of which camera. Also for video work in general I'd recommend learning to focus manually since autofocus isn't something you can/should trust for a lot of scenarios

I'm a huge Sony fanboy but tbh I've recently been looking at adding a GH5 as a B/C cam to my lineup due to how solid the video options on it are, especially the 4:3 anamorphic mode. Never been a fan of the A7 compared to the A7R and A7S series since they are so much better at their respective roles, and the A7 series is kind of watered down mixture. The A7iii is less guilty of this and looks solid but will absolutely be overshadowed by the A7Siii whenever that is released. If you're strictly buying this cam for video and can afford waiting I'd recommend seeing what the A7Siii has to offer if you like full frame and are down to invest in the E-Mount, since using a metabones is a PITA, I try to avoid it whenever possible. If you're cool with the tiny sensor the GH5 is rock solid and kicks the A7Sii's ass in a lot of catagories

Love love love my GH5. The IBIS is unreal. If you get a Metabones make sure you get the Ultra not the XL. One thing that is a bit of a pain in the ass is that the adapter is not a perfect fit and there is a micro jiggle between the body and the adapter. I haven't found a good fix for it yet, but I'm thinking of rigging up something with my manfortto tripod plate, the tripod mount on the adapter and the one on the camera. There is also a new metabones style adapter that is apparently half the price and has addressed the micro jiggle issue better. Cant remember the name of it off the top of my head. Came out like 2 months after I got my set up I was a bit chapped. I haven't played with the 4k too much, but 1080p 60fps 10bit 422 is liiiiit. Slowmo at 120fps is super sharp, 180fps gets a little soft. The crop factor wasn't too much of an issue for me since I mostly shoot sports and having the extra tele range has been a plus for filming surfing. With the metabones 18-35 become like 24-50 or something so its still wide enough. The tele extend feature rocks. Still learning how to dial all the settings in perfect. Found out pretty quick that you gotta be so on point with your focusing hahaha the focus peaking is a huge help it was just that everything is so sharp. From taking a year off filming and having last come from a t2i and a hmc150 the GH5 was a pretty big jump. I do sometimes wonder what it would have been like going the sony route tho...

All depends on what you want, are you okay with shooting mostly 1080p60? do you need your iso to go higher than 1600 with no noise? A7s

TBH for filming skiing the GH5 is perfect, the A7s is better for everything else.

The alternate speed booster to the metabones I was talking about is a Viltrox ef m2

The sensor IS is unreal, other cameras dont have anything comparable.

a7s is the clear choice for video, the a7r is more directed towards stills im pretty sure.

the A7 series has alright sensor stabilization from the A7ii onward but the GH5 is definitely in another league, check out this video demonstrating it, its a bummer the GH5S didn't include stabilization

for the Sonys, the S stands for sensitivity and R for resolution, so the R is clearly more photo focused. The 12mp 3:2 sensor has pretty much the perfect amount of pixels for 16:9 4K, whereas the 42mp Rii/Riii sensor has way too much for the processor to handle so it has to pixel bin which skips pixels and results in a worse image than the A7Sii using every pixel of the sensor. If you shoot in super35 crop mode on the Rii/Riii it takes a complete 5K image and downsamples to 4K. I shoot both an Sii and Rii and I strictly shoot the Rii in super35 crop mode since the 5K downsample actually looks better than the A7Sii image IMO, but the second the light starts to get remotely dark its pretty useless and thats where the A7Sii can handle any less than ideal light no problem

I have used both and they are both solid options, I snagged the a7iii cuz I wanted the lowlight and photo capabilities. I love the cam, the battery life is great now with the new battery as well. If you're going strictly video I'd go with the gh5. feel free to message me with questions!

Ok so Panasonic has unreal stabilization vs Sony with better photos and better low light options. How good are Panasonic’s photo capabilities? The sensor is smaller but what other features work for it, good auto focus? Continuous raw shooting?

I know you said you'd want to keep the 7D, but you should seriously consider selling it and your Canon glass and just switching over to the A7iii for both photo and video. I would bet that you would end up shooting some photos on the Sony anyways because it does photo so well. On top of that, to really get the most out of the fast auto focus and image stabilization you should use Sony glass, using an adapter negates some of the qualities that makes the Sony appealing.

If you're dead set on using it for video only I'd say go with the GH5. The in body image stabilization will come in a lot more handy than the (slightly) better low light performance of the A7iii.
