Discussion time. Just from what I could tell I think Zahner should have won. The recaps were pretty straight forward with who dropped the biggest hammers. That being said, Remco seems like a super nice dude and a killer guy/skier to hang out with for a week which could have swayed how the group voted.
Was Remco's style just what was wanted? Did Zahner get a little cocky during the week causing the group to overlook his bangers? Did Eheath toss any rodeos?
Anyone with answers is welcome to respond. Along with anyone without them.
Most importantly, this shot of Simon and Jacob standing next to eachother is gold.
I thought Jacob should have taken the W, I feel like Zahner had a shot but may be too much of a looseball for level 1 lol

Also OP, you understand how superunknown works correct? It seems pretty transparent that the riders at SU select the winner, Josh doesn't even vote. The media votes at SU but they don't use their vote unless there is a tie, but same as every year of SU the rider votes were the only votes counted and they selected the winner, again.

I guess OP this was more so in general to everyone, not just you, because you seem to understand the concept.
I think its really hard to encapsulate the week into 3 videos, attempting to judge who you think should have won via recap videos is a bit tough.
i feel like this year the talent level was so high that a couple people could get callouts next year. If there's a trip in QC or on the east coast bellanger will get called out and if there's some denver shit going on i'd imagine sam would get invited. the only one that I hope gets an opportunity that may not because of his geographical handicap is simon, i was a huge fan.
after rewatching all the edits remco didn't have the most shots but everything was quality and clean. how can you argue with a rider voted competition? everyone there saw something in him and that can't be argued with. plus his video submission shows he's got the chops to hang on a rail trip.

I'm not going to go on a "but he only did a zero spin and a 9 off the jump" rant (fuck Jib_Coast), because it definitely is tough to judge what happened during an entire week from just a few short recap videos, but I'm interested to hear more about how Remco came out on top after some of the guys went absolutely nuts.

The thing is that there is SO MUCH footage, every shot was logged but many hit the cutting room floor, which should be considered. Plus, its not just that, as others have said the entry videos were also considered in the riding judging as well, mixed in with each riders personal opinions and you've got a winner.

Right but there’s more than one filmer at a level 1 shoot 110%. So even if one misses a shot I’m sure there’s 3 or 4 others to capture it.

As I stated before they don't always pick the shots that are the best tricks. If they like the way a shot looks then that's the one they use regardless of the specific trick. It's not necessarily always about the skiing.

I really don't see why NS is so hyped on Sam, doing classic tricks he's always been doing. It's his 3rd super unknown now? He's more "known" then any of the guys out there. Sam's a great skier no doubt, but I don't see why people feel like he should win super unknown after entering it so many times. I also wouldn't be surprised if he gets called in for a trip regardless, he probably wouldn't even need super unknown for that anyways.

I will say that I don't think it's fair to compare him to himself. I swear that's been an issue in sports since the beginning of time. "Well, yeah that was fucking sick and nobody else can top that, but we expect more out of you compared to others because you're a bigger name." Seems to happen a lot. I'm not saying that's what you're talking about at all, but I think his hype is well-deserved.
I do agree with you though, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Zahner shooting with Level 1 in the near future. He's definitely at that point.

I think its hard to see consistency from the recap videos. Based on the vids alone I probably would've picked Zahner or Jacob but its a rider judged contest. Also one trick Remco did that really stood out to me was the cork three over the spine to 180 in the second recap vid. You need to get the speed fucking perfect for that which is impressive
Whether or not NS agrees with it, Remco definitely earned his win. Over half of the finalists there deserved the win almost equally - Jacob, Joel, Simon, Hunter, and Zahner all killed pretty much every feature that the crew skied and Parker, Jessy, Jack, and Calvin had some unbelievable tricks thru the week as well.
Like Eheath has said, the recap edits are such a small peek into the skiing that goes on in a weeks' time so they never really capture everything that happens. I had to cut at least 2-3 solid ass tricks per rider per feature in each edit to keep em within time. There were SO many shots I wish I could have included of everyone (and gaddamn does it suck to not be able to put everyone's bangers out there) but at the end of the day I had to prioritize the "best of the best" shots (which obviously has some inherent bias/limitation if I'm choosing what to cut/not cut). Also @PeteMahn my main editing philosophy is to prioritize the skiing, not the filming - but there are times when shots are missed or something sick gets cut because the trick isn't done justice by the angles it was filmed from, like you've acknowledged. Most all of the riders picked up their footage at the end of the week so you guys should probably look forward to seeing a couple self edits that are much more thorough at showing all of the tricks.
Also, keep in mind the rider-voting system. Yes, good personality and friendships are likely to influence the way that the guys vote - but that's also kind of the point. If you're trying to win a contest to shoot with a production company, you've got to be the right kind of person to bring along on a filming trip. It's bound to naturally work out that the winner is both a great skier and a great person. Remco is totally that guy - can't wait to see what he does with L1.
Its great to see Berman running superpark but with free child labor. He doesn't have to pay insurance, transportation, rider fees, etc. What a mastermind.
