People of color will change the snowsports industry

As we all know people of color are more likely than not.. to be underprivelaged. As we May Not know... Whites are more likely to have special privelages. When I talk to my friends of mexican origin or my African American friends about how they should come skiing or snowboarding sometime.. they get hyped! There is no doubt in my mind they would shred hard.. but why don’t they ever come up to the slopes? It’s simple.. they don’t have “that kind” of money.. also it seems like if they do come up it is frowned upon. In an idustry that is Overwhelmingly White and Upper Middle- Upper Class.. people of color simply “have no place” at the resorts.. I’ve seen the looks they get when they come around to some places... now I know not all whites have a thing against minorities.. i’m just saying there seem to be a good amount that simply have a misunderstanding about them.. and this leads these individuals to lash out against them whether that be by direct confrontation or more subtle gestures.

At least that has been the notion for some time now.. why did I make this thread?

Simple.. as a Native American who shares the love of skiing and snowboarding with millions of others.. I think that there is no better time than now to start making changes to the way the industry does business. In that sense I beleieve that more people of color should be included.. How will we make this happen? Who knows but.. making the rental gear in shops more affordable for them would be a start. Their numbers would perhaps more than compensate for the price drop.. wouldn’t you say? Or is that just crazy talk?
So what are your ideas on how we can include more POC into our industry?
Do you believe they belong in the industry? If not then why not?
I’m sure plenty of you have education or experience in business and business trends.. i’m also sure many of you have attended prestigious insitutions and have worked at fortune 500 companies... so there is no doubt in my mind that You have an answer as to why POC are excluded from the same things you all have?

I feel that it's more culture than anything. Kinda like why there are not many who came from upper class white families in the NBA. Lowering rental and ticket prices won't happen, resort companies like vail probably hire many people just to track the price market and find where supply and demand cross and than price accordingly.

The thing is when you go to a ski resort how many people of color do you see? about 3.5 usually. this is because of something you may not think about when dicussing this issue. when White skiers join skiing they are introduced to the badass people that smoke weed and shit but people of color on average are surroned by that allready so they get into skiing they realize that all people in skiing are white racist fucks that smoke weed to equalize the problems in their life. Yes, that is true in a sense.. then again the population is also mostly white almost everywhere else in the US. Also, your map shows that wherever there is “good skiing” the population is actually “Multi Ethnic”. Unless, maybe you are reffering to the east coast as good sking? I was thinking the good skiing is in Utah or Colorado, Montana, and the PNW.. which btw have pretty sizeable diverse populations).

No, that's not what I'm saying, I agree with you, I know poc that would be great on skis and even taken them a couple times, it's just not something that as a group they are as interested in.

I kind of like it that way, not all black people are criminals, but as a racial group they of commit more crime. It's like if you leave your bike unlocked in the city it gets stolen. That doesn't happen when you leave your skis on a ski rack for the most part. Call me what you will, but you know it's true.

Utah isn't diverse at all

Most Utahns are of Northern European descent. In the 2010 Census estimates, 89.2% of the state population is white and European American. Hispanics are the next largest group with 13.0%, followed by Asians at 1.7% and Native American at 1.3%.

I honestly don't think it's as much of a money thing as a culture thing. I have easily less money than almost everyone I know, yet I still get out once a week. If you want to ski, you can find a way.

It seems like this idea is beyond a racial thing and is one of the reasons there is no event besides the olympics where people pay attention to skiing, because not enough people have the economic means to ski, there for there are less people progressing the sport. If it cost the same amount of money to get into skiing as it cost to start playing soccer or basketball, the progressing of the sport would go up exponentially.

It seems like this idea is beyond a racial thing and is one of the reasons there is no event besides the olympics where people pay attention to skiing, because not enough people have the economic means to ski, there for there are less people progressing the sport. If it cost the same amount of money to get into skiing as it cost to start playing soccer or basketball, the progressing of the sport would go up exponentially.

lift ticket prices are an easy way to limit crowds as well. could you imagine if it was just as cheap to ski as to go see a movie? lets be realistic folks, we are thankful for the current lift ticket prices. just imagine the lift lines on a pow day if it were $10

What's retarted about basing your opinions of racial groups IN GENERAL on crime statistics by race?

Obviously not all black people are criminals, but they commit far more crime on average. I like to live and spend time in places where there are less criminals. If more black people skied, there would be more likelihood of my shit getting stolen based on the statistics.

Coming from a town that is mostly indian tech workers making six figures plus I can say the reason they don't ski alot is because it's expensive and they are CHEAP AF. I thought the point of being rich was not having to feed your kids with grocery store free samples all afternoon.

Like everything, being hired by a company should be merit based, not based on race or gender like affirmative action companies seem to do.

Say what you want, but at the end of the day having separate prices for separate races is just as bad as different water fountains, bathrooms, etc... And who is the judge on what race people are? If I hit the tanning bed can I get the Latino pricing?

Not really sure how this comes into play for the current topic, but there have actually been multiple studies that have proved that hiring agents, particularly white hiring agents, when given the choice between two equally qualified and experienced candidates, will far more often choose the one that doesn't have the race-identifiable name. Just saying.

It’s socio-economic and cultural. Golfing is expensive and, like skiing, predominantly played by rich people who can afford it. Historically the rich people in the US were white so golfing (like skiing) became a hobby for wealthy whites. The sports are cultural and passed down from one generation to the next.

Obviously as wealth distribution changes so does the demographic of these two sports. We now see more POC playing golf and skiing— but it will take time for it to become engrained in their cultures and passed down.

Neither sport will ever be for the poor, rather as wealth becomes distributed away from whites and amongst POC we will see diversity more represented on the slopes.

However, keep in mind that not every ethnic group wants to go skiing no matter how much money they have. Surrounded by Indian tech workers I see the posts on my next door and community Facebook groups of all the Indians who try skiing once as a novelty and then bitch about how cold and miserable it was and how they hated parting ways with their $$

this is for the whole state though. SLC is very diverse and right next to some of the best skiing in the world.
