i recently got a new car. i used to have a 04 wrx in automatic, because i was jsut learning to drive and my mom thought that would be best. but i got sick of the shitty pick up, so today i went and bought a brand new 05 but this time i got stick. but ive never really driven stick and it sucks learning, like i keep worrying im gonna fuck up my car. my friends keep saying it took them a few day but i dunno. any tips? and how long did it take you guys to learn? bluh i jsut wanna go rally my car but im too damn blonde or somthing

practice practice practice and even then, you'll fuck up occasionally. but it's super fun. automatic is for bitches.

shitty pickup... r u kidding me? even an automatic WRX kicks all other cars asses, i want a WRX, anyway yea i drive a manual and it took me like a few days of solid practice to get it, and even after that you will occasionally stall, the worst part is starting on hills... especially your first time on a hill at like a stop light or something with crazy people behind you honking...

when u lift the clutch up find the exact point where it slips a little bit and where if you lift it up just a lil bit it will engage or if you push it in it will disengage. when you find that point it will make things alot easier, and wutever u do never let the clutch out fast and dont rev ur car up too much when ur starting out, dont go over 2 grand until the car starts moving then you can give it more gas as you let the clutch out, atleast thats wut i do

i have a 05 WRX in WRB, its a stick. have you modded yours up yet. ive got an HKS carbon fiber Exhaust with down pipe, greddy type S blow off valve, HKS short ram intake, maual boost controller, turbo timer, and wheels.

and to all you people saying im spoiled for not liking the automatics pick up...you really have to drive it to find out. from 0-5mph a mini van would bet you off the line, once the turbo kicks in its great. but the first pick up was so slow it was almost dangourous. and its not like i didnt appreciate my other car, but if your parents would get you a better one wouldnt you do that too?

i learned when i was 9 i think. the one thing that really helps is when you let the clutch out, push the gas at the same rate... clutch out, gas in... haha it took me a couple days and i learned in my dads 95 audi which is a turbo so it didnt have much torque till the turbo kicked in.

driving stick is really simple
and there is only one thing to do: JUST DRIVE IT! just take it out at night for a few hours, not only is it alot of fun to cruise at night, u can usually exceed the speed limit by quite a bit and have alot of fun, also dont think about it as a chore, u got a manual cause ur not a pussy automatic mutha fucker, and its alot of fun to drive, plus its so much beter, u are 1 with the car and u have all the control,u can redline all the time, u shift at 3 or w/e u want, plus its a manual, which is like being a supder duper ski star, which means chicks will want to sleep with u now

hahaha some people on here are so jealous. anyways, just when you are taking off is the only hard thing really to learn. well until you get to the stage where you're talking on a cellphone, drinking a soda and eating a salad all while trying to go around a corner and shift, which I can safely say I have mastered. just remember that the clutch and gas pedal are like a dance. they always go together and they flow. just the right amount of gas and let out of the clutch at the same tendency, you'll have it down in no time. also it's probably not a good idea to shift from 5th to 2nd gear going 45. don't ask me what I was doing becasue i don't even know. it just sort of happened. anyways good luck and remember it takes practice.

just practice. thats all you can do. just take your time releasing the clutch looking for when it engages. its better to have 2 or 3 seconds before you start moving than to release the clutch too fast, stall it, have to restart it, all in rush hour trafic downtown. then again, it did keep me from stalling it after that

thanks guys im think im doing better today, i just went out for a few hours to get that sweet spot on the clutch and now i feel better about it haha. oh and twintipin13 i dunno if all the girls will wanna sleep with me now....i am a girl. heheh

Well I drive stick and am one of the best... say my friends. (I think they are just buttering me up for rides) Anyways, it's tough at the start. Took me a couple months because I usually drove automatic cuz my nice car was automatic and the standard car was a firefly! If it is a necessity to be able to drive standard, you'll get it. It doesn't really hurt the car much so don't worry. The driver trainer my friend took standard on had over 130 000 km on it and still ran fine. Sweet ride by the way, you filthy rich chump!

It took me a day to learn, just cruised around backroads. Then within in about 3-4 days I had it dialed. I totally prefer stick to auto now. I drove a Volvo for a while, but that died, so now I'm in a '93 Toyota Half Ton Pickup. Still got the factory motor and trannie. Runs great though, awesome 4 wheel, could take on a WRX in the backroads.

stick shift is the only way to go. it bothers me when people..especially guys..don't know how to drive stick. i end up teaching all my friends, and they fuck up my car royally. just a hint, don't forget to put it in first when you get out of the car, or it'll be flying across the road without you

holy fuck I hate people that buy cars they cant drive. Last year a kid bought a new WRX (black, very sexy) but he couldnt drive it and always drove around town in 1st at like 5000 rpm, then shifted straight to 3rd because he thought it was cool. Right, anyway maybe you ought to go find somebody who knows how to drive and trade cars with them.

Seriously though, I had trouble for about a half hour then my dad took me to an empty street and we did about 20 start and stops. I was always letting the clutch out way too fast, like just popping the hell out of it. When you're first starting you should do the whole thing really slow, and you'll progressively get faster and more consistant with it. Then there's hills. My technique is to 'big toe-little toe' it. Put your big toe on the brake so you dont roll, and do the gas with your little toe. Let the clutch out slow and when it starts to catch, let off the brake. It takes a bit of practise but it becomes second nature, and it's a helluva lot more fun than an auto.

dude i wouldnt call 0-60 in 5.5 seconds shitty pickup.

dont burn your clutch by gassing while the clutch is in. start letting the clutch out, then press the gas, i dont care what the fuck drivers ed says.

i got a 5 speed motorcycle in 6th grade. i had the timing down from that bitch. got in a 5 speed before i had my license, bam started going without stalling that crap. in fact, i didnt stall until i had my license months later.

oh ya motorcycling helps a lot too. You just gotta do it man. Dont worry too much about fucking your car up, so long as you arent grinding any gear when you shift. The amount of time it takes to learn wont really hurt your car all that bad.

im suprised no one added this yet. i learned how to drive stick by wearing no shoes. i shit you not my friend taught me in his car and thats how they taught him in drivers ed. it really lets you feel when the clutch engages and disengages. try it thats how ive been teaching other people and i think it helps alot. also what helped click for me was i stopped too short of a stopsign the first day i went out to learn and just pulling all the way up to the stopsign by giving it very little gas and riding the clutch a little just made it all click for some reason.

It comes pretty quick, it's just odd at first. To get a good feel for the car, find a flat piece of road (driveway or curb lane infront of house) and put it in first and let the clutch out slowly, with NO gas. If you are super gentle, and feel the clutch engaging the slightest bit, you will start to move forward slowly, until you're rolling fast enough you can let the clutch out completely. Do it a few times and you'll be one with your clutch ;)

And yes, it IS possible..

eventually you will get the hang of it. in a year of having my license i have taught myself to engage it with no gas, double clutching, and heel-toe on a car i don't regularly drive...its all natural and comes with practice.

starting is the hardest thing to learn of the bat, but downshifting is an art form...
