2019 Volkl Mantra

In the market for a new all mountain ski that can do it all. My current setup is the Shreditor 102(172) which has been a overall good ski, but I want something new, preferably a ski that I can charge groomers and backcountry on. My eyes are on the new 2019 Mantra M5 which everyone seems to be hyping up. I was wondering if you guys can give me any insight on what 2017-2019 skis would be comparable to the M5. Im 5'8 and 185 pounds. Thanks.

Do you ski any park at all as the M5 is a completely different ski than the Shreditor 102? The Mantra has always been a stiff, directional wide carving/all mountain ski for advanced skiers that never go near a park and the Shreditor 102 is a softer flexing, playful wide park/all mountain freestyle ski.
The Volkl M5 now has less metal and rocker/camber/rocker so it is getting reviews that it is easier to ski and a touch more playful but still far cry from a freestyle ski. The M5 would be similar to the Nordica Enforcer, Blizzard Bonafide and Head Monster skis which are all great all mountain skis with traditional mounts that will never see the park.

Skis that would be an improvement on groomers over the Shreditors and still be fun and playful, would be skis like the K2 Poachers, Blizzard Rustler 9, ON3P Kartel 98(or new 96), Moment PB&J etc. The ski length should be in the 180's for your size btw.

Thanks Greg that was really helpful. Any idea when the new M5s will drop? Looked on evo and they only offer the 17/18 mantra.

Skiessentials.com did a very in-depth review and videos on the M5 and Rustler 9 and both are available for sale now I think.

New mantra looks sick. The current mantra is a super aggressive and unique ski so it has a pretty niche market, but the new one, with the addition of camber underfoot, slightly narrower waist width and a little less metal sounds like a recipe for success, especially after the reviews it's been getting. I'd say go for it. Other options could be the QST 99 (also revised for next year), Rustler 9 (new), or something from Nordica's Enforcer line.

Skied on new mantra thing is an all mountain tank and awesome ski. That being said if you want any playfulness or ability to kinda jib around the mountain, then look else where. In regards to availability try your local volkl dealer they might have some we have some in our shop.

The 1.0 and 2.0 are good park/freestyle skis that would be similar to your Shreditor(2.0 very similar as it’s quite soft flexing) and both are the complete opposite of the Mantra M5.

You never said if you skied park at all and if you wanted something the same as the Shreditor to use there or something totally different like the directional, stiffer on piste, wide carving ski Mantra M5.

Hard to give someone advise until you better describe how/where you ski and what you like/want in a ski.

I rarely ski the park. About 30/70 split. I spend majority of my time on groomers and powder in Wolf Creek or Winter Park.

I'm a huge fan of the old Mantra/Gotama/Katana line up of yore. I was sad to see them dismantle that line up, but cheered to see that the Mantra still held to the same principles. I'm a bit sad to see them dumb down the ski with the M5 but I understand the logic of bringing the ski to a larger market. Personally I would rather grab the current version Mantra before it disappears if you are looking for a point-down-the-fall-line, bust all the crud, sturdy charging machine. Yeah you won't be slaying the park on that ski, but you can certainly send some big mountain lines, and carve big arcs on groomers.

Evo doesnt have the 2019 M5s on the site. We carry them in store only right now. We can do an over the phone sale and ship them from store if you want

And you'll be able to do that on the new one. I think the innovative use of metal in the new one will make it a better east coast all mountain ski. Volkl was lacking one in the space and this is the perfect ski for that to combat all its competitors. I think a majority of people would have considered the old mantra but were scared by the two full sheet in it. Making it a little more playful makes sense. I would imagine the kendo will do the same next year after they get input from the masses regarding the 5th gen mantra. Both the Kanjo and Confession only have a single sheet and the 100X line is for those looking to go uphill. maybe they need to do what Blizzard has done and create a Rustler like line and keep a line like the bonafide and cochise for those seeking full metal.

Agree with your thoughts the old mantra was great and all but for an east coast all mountain ski, or something that is more versatile out west as well the new construction and rocker profile makes a lot more sense
