skiermanMost legit people love him because he's a massive inspiration and is one of the best all around skiers to exist. Most gapers hate him because they see some old clips of him online acting like an ass and assume that's all he is... or they laugh at the clip of him blowing up both ankles because well, gapers are a fucking cancer on this sport... like the Bunch.
KneesSalsasI never saw him being an ass online tho. But yeah...
skierman"REAL MOUNTAINS" yeahhh its a classic.
PowPirateTHE GUYS A BEAST!! SLAYS PARKS, BIG MOUNTAIN, URBAN, EVEN FUCKING MOGULS!! HIS HAD SOME REALLY GNARLY INJURIES AND IS STILL AT IT. DONE SO MUCH FOR THE SPORT AND YOU CAN TELL HE JUST REALLY LOVES IT. I GET HE CAN BE QUITE ABRASIVE BUT I GENERALLY GIVE HIM A PASS. THE DUDE LIKES WHAT HE LIKE AND DOES WHAT HE DOES WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. EVEN IF YOU DONT LIKE HIM YOU HAVE TO RESPECT HIM
NobassettI think his movie summed it up well when it said that the guy isnt a rolemodel, he's a skier, plain and simple. I respect him because he has done so much for the sport we all love, not because he's someone i wanna look up to
KeeganKil--- emphasized.. hope I'm not speaking alone. The """professional""" skier was definitely never some shit to look up to.. it was the dude having more fun than anyone else you've ever seen that you were looking up to. This guy, when I was growing up happened to be tv.

Shewlur...Met him five years ago at a bar in Copper. I was like 16 or 17 at the time and he couldn’t have been nicer. A buddy who i was with is from Amsterdam, which certainly helped spark the conversation lol.
The best athletes always have their quirks. Tanner had a few missteps along the way, but there is no denying he is still one of the greatest skiers alive. People grow up and change. Judge tanner by his incredible career. Don’t form a character assessment based on mistakes he made when he was younger, cockier, and immature.

dan4060He has done an incredible amount for skiing. One of the best ever.
He, CR and Evan Raps used to know my roommate back in 2002 in Squaw. They hung out a few times. They were all pretty cool, never seemed to present a huge attitude. I've heard of him being a dick, but in my limited time around him he was pretty cool. He definitely did not have a cocky "do you know who I am" vibe about him.
Many people on this website don't like him because of the "Real Mountains" comment. He may not have worded it well, but he has a right to his opinion, and as someone who dominated in all aspects of the sport his opinion has some relevance. And as one of the greatest park/pipe skiers ever I think it really hit hurt lots of the park rats here. People can deny it all they want, but there really is something to that. Lots of kids felt betrayed, they had been hearing for years about how big mountain was superior and now their hero was going to the other side. I think he could have worded it better, but subtlety is not his strong suit. He probably could have conveyed his feeling that big mountains in AK are the ultimate playgrounds for skiing without alienating lots of his fans.
Regardless, the guy has done quite a bit for skiing.
papermacheI don't think he worded it wrong at all I think people like you just got it twisted. He didn't "switch sides." there is no switching sides. big mountain skiing is skiing. Park skiing is skiing and he still skis park. But there is more to skiing than just the park and If you were troubled by his words it was because you yourself are one of the people 'taking sides' and haven't realized that the mountains have more to offer than just rails and jumps.
dan4060I'm actually not troubled by his words at all. I almost never ski the park. I could really care less about park and urban. What I am saying is that it bothered lots of people on this website, and it did. I was here back then, and there was huge backlash. I don't know if you were here or not, but lots of park rats bitched about it. To be honest, I was being very careful in the wording of my post, I actually DO think the ultimate skiing is found in AK, and I don't think Tom Wallisch is one of the 50 best skiers in the world. I don't know ANYONE who can ski both park and big mountain at a high level who prefers park, and Tanner was basically saying that. He was saying that the ultimate in skiing is in the big mountains, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I was careful with my words because I did not want to start another park/big mountain war, there have been enough of those here. But I actually agree with you, Tanner was saying unequivocally that he thought big mountain skiing was the ultimate skiing, and it pissed people here off. I was definitely not one of those people, I actually agree completely with Tanner. To be honest, when I lived in Tahoe I would take my twin tips out and ski park and bumps once every 15 ski days or so, if that. Sometimes I would take my fat boards into the park, but I really did not care to ski park, and I still don't. Now I only ski 35-40 days a year, and I am not going to spend them in the park. I probably take one or two park laps a year.
And I would not personally say Tanner switched sides, but I remember threads here where lots of kids seemed to feel that way. Henrik Windstedt said something like "these kids who only ski park, they are terrible skiers" back around 2004 and people here went nuts.
I have never actually slid a rail, just a mail box once. I don't think that is going to change. My ski days are basically all at Mammoth, and that mountain is too good for me to spend time in the park. I have no problem with people skiing park it that is what they want, but I have no interest in it. I am older than most here, I grew up skiing bumps back east. We dreamed about Squaw, Jackson and Chamonix. When I hear kids talk about wanting to go out west and "where is the best park" I actually feel sorry for them. Don't get me wrong, if you want to ski park go for it, but I would not base a move west on who has the best park, you can find park in the east. Lots of mountains out west have great terrain as well as rails/jumps, if you spend all your time doing that sort of stuff you will really miss out on one of the great elements of skiing.
I hope my post does not touch off a park vs. big mountain debate. There have been enough of those.

Cade2Why do you have an NS account
theLiquorI don’t know him but you never hear any douchy stories of peoples actual encounters with him.
freeskibum82Tanner is one of those individuals that rose to fame very quickly at a young age and the attitude came with it. He got caught up in things but has since settled down and found himself in the big mountain ski scene and loving backcountry trips. I think once he put all the contest/partying nonsense behind him he really became someone people can look up to again. His old segments from yearbook and propaganda are legendary though. While TBC was great, couldnt stand his attitude in it.
Cade2Who actually hates thall?
wameronGrowing up I absolutely loved T-Hall, I used to watch Pop Yer Bottles on the way to school every other day. After he busted both knees on the motocross style jump he kind of fell into a hole and I started to just see him as a washout. Then this year he came out with Ring the Alarm and I'm back to loving the shit out of him. To see someone that old make such an awesome comeback is nuts. Man is 34 and hitting gnarly-ass urban.
freeskibum82damn.. calling 34 old.. all the OGs are still killing it. 34 aint old. look what Mike D, Seth, Pep, Candide, Sage, etc... are all doing.

wameronAll the guys you listed slay big mountain stuff, I'd say most non-NFL/NHL playing 34 year olds can take the kind of hits he takes doing his urban shit and walk the next day. JP was about 34 when he did his segment for Revolver which had some sweet urban shots but none of it was as gnarly as the stuff T-Hall is doing
