Got my pass pulled at snowbird for skiing the north Gad chutes today. The ski patroller pulled our passes because we were in an area he described as too "hairy"to be skied. No avi danger just too "rocky" to be open. Was not putting anyone in danger besides ourselves yet he still pulled our passes. In hindsight we shoulda been a dick to him and just booked it to the car.
I did that once at mineral basin, was lucky and got off with a warning (probably because I apologized profusely and looked like I was about to go into tears)

Yep ducked the rope. I think I'm a little to old to pretend to cry but if that works ill pick it up. Had a similar issue like 3 years ago at the bird for skiing to fast in a slow zone but got a warning that time.
mikemYa he said that. He pulled our passes at the bottom of the run and dropped in after my homie dropped. Thought it deserved a warning if anything tbh.
Damn thats a bummer, probably couldve gone either way maybe you just caught him/her in a bad mood.

in foresight you obviously know as much if not more than than patrol about snow science and avi danger
so paying for a pass when there are so much better mountains and terrain you can ski whenever and however you like is foolish
dont let the man hold you down or support the corp by buying passes to ski
be free my jerry wonder child
with a name like the room of doom its gots to ski good
You’re an idiot. It’s pretty damn simple, don’t duck the rope, don’t get your pass pulled. Snowbird has some of the most lenient terrain opening policies in the state, so if something is closed it is for a reason. Additionally, the majority of their patrol are badass who ski way better than you. Stop whining and own up to your actions

the terrain beneath the chutes were open. it was not going to slide, the patroller said this.
SkiBum.You ducked a rope. Got cought. Paid the price. Now you are making a post about it complaining.
good stuff.
Salty we didn't get a warning. Dude pulled our passes but said we can come buy a ticket tomorrow and still ride. Who wants to buy a $130 dollar ticket the day after their pass got pulled.

Where is the good old NS that would just troll?
You're a fucking dumbass dude, you're disrespecting the resort by disobeying the closed areas (that you had no idea why it was closed) and now you have to suffer the consequences, which you got lucky, it could've been worse. Do you know how bad that would have been if you even got injured? You're fucking selfish dude, ducking ropes in areas where ski patrol has specifically closed it off is a complete disrespect of the mountain.

I knew why it was closed and we didn't get injured. Run wasn't more rocky than gunsight right now at Alta. Im not saying it was smart to duck the rope or ski in the area, I think it was dumb to get a pass pulled without a warning when we were only putting ourselves in danger and maybe the patrollers. But like everyone here says, they are the better than me so they wouldn't get hurt right?

You broke a pretty major rule and you don't seem to appreciate what ski patrol does for you at a resort like Snowbird.. these guys are there to save your life, they are there to control the mountain, if they say something is too dangerous to ski, you probably should listen. Like I said, you're lucky you only got your pass pulled, it could've been worse. You should accept that you broke the rules and stop bitching about it.

I just admitted above that I broke the rules. I know what a patroller does and we were super respectful to him. Since you are king eheath please tell me why we didn't get a warning?
yeah it's a little harsh to pull your pass and i feel you that youre bummed about it-- that sucks
but you have to understand that at a place like snowbird the patrollers have a very serious workload of keeping the mountain in control and keeping people safe. they have enough dangers without worrying about little douchers sneaking out into possibly dangerous zones without them knowing
lesson learned for ya. also talk to the patrollers, theyd prob be happy to tell you why something is closed. ive even had them say ehh that one's fine you can hit it but don't fall haha

Because you ducked a rope in a very dangerous area, not sure why that's not processing for you, you didn't jump a slow sign or duck a rope into the trees. I think you deserved to get your passed pulled, I'm shocked you're taking this so lightly, I don't think you understand what you did.

I know I ducked a rope into a "dangerous" area which is against their rules. Please explain to me what I don't understand.
SkiBum.You obviously don't understand that you went somewhere dumb, got busted, and your pass revoked. It's simple. No one owes you a warning.
If it slid and buried a kid below and killed him, would you think a warning was ok?
If the patroller broke his femur trying to rescue your dumbass would that be okay and you could just get a slap on the wrist?
Go back to the flatlands
This. Perfect reasons. Sure you might be able to ski any terrain but that doesn't mean it's safe. How do you know it wasn't going to slide? Did you check the snow? If it was as Rocky as you say and you took a little tumble and broke some shit, then ski patrol would have to come save your ass. If you want freedom to ski whatever you want, ski backcountry. Otherwise obey the resort rules. You got your pass pulled because you ducked the ropes in a dangerous and difficult trail that was closed. It's not like you ducked on something mellow for some untouched pow. Wake up man. And yes, playing dumb works most of the time if you get in trouble, but that's besides the point. You were wrong.

Yeah, dude, that whole area is a rock garden under about a foot and a half of snow, before this past weekend, it was completely unskiable, now you're just lucky you didn't go anus to rocks, I've been stopped by mountain safety before for going too fast, but ducking into an avy prone rock run-out is advanced stupid. TLDR:. You absolutely deserved to have your pass pulled. Go ski the Cirque, that's open and plenty hard, harder than you need judging by the tracks I saw up there on Sunday.
you fucked up man, plain and simple. just be happy the ol alta town constable wasnt there to greet you at the bottom. its a bad snowpack year and there have been days up there ive witnessed where mellow inbounds terrain was sliding like no other. their terrain management at times can be a bit frusturating with crowds but it comes with good reason. youre just one guy who was able to get down to the bottom, imagine that with 50+ other yahoos on vacation that just want some fresh turns. that shit could be a really bad day.
learn about snowpack, get some touring gear, dont be a dumbass, and you can have all the fun out there you want.
and that last part dude honestly, if youre gonna be in the wrong and continue to be a dick to patrol then you can get fucked. theyre just trying to explain to you (during busy holiday times with other issues they gotta deal with) that you fucked up and why you fucked up, and if youre gonna be another entitled cunt then you can fuck right off back east like the rest of the jizzstains that pull that shit there. i cant stand you fuckers that rip into employees for your fuck ups. eat a dick.

I get what your saying with the 50+ gapers dropping in. I just don't like snowbird, got a pass warning like 3 years ago for skiing to fast in a slow area which was totally warranted but this one time I sent like a 30 footer to flat and double tomahawked. I skied into the Gad 2 without poles cause I was just going to go back and get em and the Lifty noticed I had a bloody nose and he wouldn't let me ride up until a patroller came and checked me out.
Snowbird is just a totally different vibe compared to Alta in terms of management and how they interact with skiers. It feels like the bird doesn't trust their riders while Alta encourages them.

I agree with you about the vibe, snowbird definitely tries it's best to appeal to out of towners, many of whom are complete dumbshits and clog the slopes, but hey, ski the hard stuff, and you don't have to deal with them. If you had skied into any other zone on the mountain, I might have a little more sympathy for you, but if you saw how much of a total boneyard it was just under the snow there, no way you'd have dropped in, not to mention the group mentality of, oh someone else skied that so it must be okay, which might cause a total gaper to get stuck or seriously hurt themselves in there. Being frank, you're damn lucky you weren't that person. Honestly I'm just glad you're okay. I seriously doubt you read any kind of avalanche report before you dropped in, and you got lucky this time. But let's say you drop into that with more significant avy danger present, gotten caught in an avalanche and been disemboweled on the sharp rocks waiting under the slope in a gruesome bloody smear in full view of the gad lift. Guess who's gonna have to clean that up? From a patrollers point of view, there's no way you aren't getting your pass pulled. Try again next year, be a little smarter about the rules. At a place like snowbird, they usually aren't meant to be broken.

The bird is like vail of the Wasatch. I'm not an snowpack expert by no means, but I'm not dumb enough to go over into the Road to Provo or pipeline bowl on a day like Sunday. The patroller told me they were more concerned about people getting their scrotums torn up by some rocks than an avy. picture with great editing for reference.

OK, but since you can't see the rocks under the snow, don't you see how one wrong turn and that could be you getting Lance Armstronged? And then falling into more rocks and getting your shit more fucked up. I get that it looks appealing, but it's the same as meeting a girl with Chlamydia and deciding to raw dog it anyway. Unless you're from out of town and truly had no idea just how bony it was under there.

Ah, I see, I thought you were referring to the get serious chutes, not that stuff there. That makes it slightly more understandable, but still, same shit applies, although I understand why you're pissed. I'm pretty sure everyone in this thread thought you were referring to get serious chutes, hence the massive hate. Seeing where you went, I get why, but same difference, that area isn't quite as hairy, but a fall there would still put the patrollers in a tough spot, not to mention yourself.

Where are the get serious chutes, out of curiosity?
That's the biggest rule at very mountain. Especially the big ones. Don't duck the fucking 4opes. They don't owe you a warning. It's 0 tollerance most places even if it was a freshly groomed green run. The fact that its rocky chutes is a no fucking brainer. Respect closures or deal with the consequences. Also youre butthurt about no warning but Id be willing to bet you were a total cunt to the patroller because you know everything.
Don't want to lose your pass? Follow the very few simple fucking rules. Stop whining like a fucking 5 year old about how unfair life is.
This is one of the major reasons I hate powder skiing. People see what they want to see always being endless powder. They don't even care to imagine that there's rocks under the snow or slides waiting to happen. Didn't Jamie Pierre die somewhere out there and probably many more with much more experience? Maybe not that area specifically but definitely one of those Cottonwood areas. Seen a guy break his back snowboarding pow and my powderhound friend broke his shoulder snowboarding powder that he thought was bottomless only 10 days before our Utah trip when he slammed into a rock after falling.
You only would have had a complaint to hear if there was no rope you ducked and they just said you were skiing closed territory and yanked your pass. Happened to my friends at Breck. Buddy triggered a pretty big avalanche while skiing with his brother. Buddy ended up half buried in the slide so didn't see what happened to his brother so we assumed the worst and all started digging and calling for help. You know who were the first responders? Nope, not ski patrol---the fucking silver jacketed corporate guys and lawyers from Vail resorts saying we were losing our passes and getting tresspassing charges for ducking ropes and skiing closed terrain. But there were no ropes at all up yet since it was early season and they had just opened the area and had not even got around to roping things off. So in the end we didn't lose our passes as their investigation probably showed them what a huge f'k up they made opening the area without yet roping things off. And his brother had skied away before the avalanche so he was fine but just makes me furious seeing that in that scenario Vail resorts will somehow have their attorneys with their clipboards at the scene faster than ski patrol to assist in the rescue.
The best part about these threads is the total audacity of people thinking the resorts owe them something. Like the resorts should bow down to them. Sure you pay for a lift ticket, but so do thousands of other people everyday. It's their property. They make the rules. Follow them or shut up. I'm not saying I've never ducked a rope (I have but that was in Vermont at Okemo of all places, not out west where the danger is much more real. If I had got my pass pulled, I'd probably be like well shit it's my fault so fuck....not bitch about it online). Respect the safety of your fellow skiers who could be killed by a slide hundreds of yards below that you trigger in closed terrain. And the patrollers who would risk their lives to save your ass. And the dogs....because they're dogs...and they're awesome. My last day at snowbird it started to snow a shit ton, and that whole bowl right off the road to provo in gad Valley was all closed. Why? The snow was probably fantastic. Well I can tell you it wasn't for thin cover. Maybe wind and visibility? Maybe concern for slides? Who knows. They have their reasons so we obviously respected the closed ropes. The lesson here is you should have done the same. No one will have sympathy for your story.
mikemI know more about avy conditions than you know about actually reading the thread.
Oh yeah your keen observation of "it looked like that could slide on Sunday" and ducking into roped off areas shows how much you know... I hate you more and more every time you post. Too bad Snowbird didn't ban you for life while posting up your picture at the base of every lift stating, "LOOK OUT FOR THIS GAPER.
KNOWN ALIAS: JOEY MCFUCKHEAD"
You stated Snowbird is the Vail of the Wasatch... that about sums up your complete ignorance and entitlement. I can't wait to see a story on KSL about you getting caught in an avalanche.
mikemI know more about avy conditions than you know about actually reading the thread.
I barely come on NS anymore but found this thread, and shit, you are a fucking moron.
The rules at ski areas are pretty simple. If you had any understanding of avalanches, you would have respect for the snow, mountains, ski patrol and their rules, and this thread wouldn't exist.

Maybe somebody here can chime in because I don’t remember the source but I remember at either Alta or Snowbird if they got a mid week snow storm, they would wait to open certain areas and bowls for the weekenders.

No way man, they open everything as soon as they can. There are many areas at all of the Utah resorts that receive avalanche mitigation the day or two after a storm, it just all depends. If something isnt open, there is a good reason, not to save it for the weekenders, thats the silliest thing ive ever heard/
