Being serious for a moment, the general consensus is that the Gutenberg press was the most important invention of all time. At least, every time someone publishes something on the greatest inventions of all time, it's at the top. I don't know how they managed to miss the wheel, though. That seems key, somehow.

^has anyone said the book press yet? How the hell could we forget that. I think Guttenburg was voted by TIME magazine to be the most important man of the milenium, or Einstein.

I know a very imporant invention. The water wheel!
The water wheel progressed to do funtions such as pounding grain, then by using cogs, camshafts, hols and pegs, people where able to 'program' water wheels to do different task. The technology from the water wheel was intoduced into the weaving loom. By making tough paper cards with holes punched in them, you could store the information for a design that could be made flawlessley on an automatic loom. When immigrants begane to come to the US, officials on Ellis Island used punch cards to store information about people. They would punch holes to store info about age, race, sex ect. Then to use them in a census, they could put the cards in a machine that used electric contacts, if a bit a metal could go though the hole in the card then that person could be counted.
All this led up to the modern day computer!

yeah speaking of that edition of TIME magazine... that pissed me off. alot. it explained how einstein was the man of the century, which is appropriate given all he's done for the world with his knowledge of physics and whatnot, but in my mind, and the minds of many other people, it should have been Ghandi. so that made me a bit mad... sorry, off topic a bit, but that's my story
