TomWallnussHave to disagree, the number one issue by far and large is the lack of gun control, even if you look at other countries, in spite of what you claim loose gun control correlates with mass shootings' prevalence and also how lethal violent crimes are. Take a few minutes to read this article, it is an excellent write up of the data we have and picks up a lot of your points which simply cannot be explained by any objective findings: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/07/world/americas/mass-shootings-us-international.html
Fact is the US is an incredible outlier in how many guns you own and frankly I have no idea how deep you have to have your head in the sand to claim that it is not an issue.
I’m not against gun control, I definitely think we need to at least work on making what we have actually effective and get rid of loop holes, not necessarily make gun control more restrictive.
But I disagree that gun control is the major issue, it’s our gang and crime culture, by far. Guns are a tool they use, yes, but the issue starts with gang violence not what they use to implement it.
I know that article said other countries have similar crime rates yet lower gun deaths, I couldn’t read the article the statistics were coming from, but it didn’t mention anything about violent and gang crime, just crime in general. I’d really like to see how anyone could somehow compare our huge crime peoblem and drug war to Australia or Finland. We have something like 30,000+ gangs and gang members that total 1/8th of some of the populations of these European countries we’re being compared to.
The sad thing is that this accounts for 80% of our gun crime, yet gets almost no media attention at all. We have a school shooting and people quickly point to statistics that include all this crime. But don’t address it separately even thought it makes up the extreme majority of the problem.
When you compare us to other countries with much stricter gun control and lower gun ownership(not just the carefully selected examples to fit a narrative) we actually look pretty damn good. Some of our cities have gang and crime problems that rival some of the most violent countries, so to be fair I don’t think we can just compare to 1st world countries. Here’s an interesting article regarding that...
https://mises.org/wire/mistake-only-comparing-us-murder-rates-developed-countries
Then look at certain states that’s don’t have large cities with big gang problems, Utah, Wyoming, etc, and certainly counties with the highest gun ownership in the country, and we have ridiculously high gun ownership, even for the US, yet extremely low gun related crime.
Again, that just suggests even more that as a whole, our gun death problem is a culture issue not gun issue.
My biggest problem with this is the finger pointing from the super liberals saying some gun loving redneck NRA member in Montana is the problem and needs to give up
his rights because Chicago and DC has a crime problem. Or some kid with shitty parents and loaded up on meds decided to shoot up a school. It’s essencially saying “hey these people 1000 miles away have issues and can’t handle a gun so we’re going to take yours” and when they show any resistance, they’re labeled and told they are responsible for our gun violence issues and need to give up their rights. There’s a huge disconnect.
For that reason I think the resistance to just throwing out more gun control measures hoping something will work is well justified. It’s easy for somebody in a big city who’s never seen a gun to say “ just do something” but for certain people, people who aren’t any part of the problem, your fucking with their way of life, taking away their rights and saying shame on you for not liking it.
