Kinda lost all respect for him after he pulled out of Sochi slope because the course was "too hard". He's just a bit of a fuckwit tbh, both on and off the course. Wayyy to arrogant, probably because of the fact he gets way overscored because he's Shaun White. A couple of years ago when he got his private pre-olympic pipe in Australia, a few friends saw him in Jindabyne and went up and he told them to go, because it wasn't "pr time"

As much as everyone dislikes him, you gotta respect him man. The fact that he's 31 and keeping up with the new young generation of snowboarding is unreal. I'm insanely impressed that he can still snowboard at such a high level, you can't knock him on that.

So idk where to put this and it doesn't need its own thread so I'm putting it here

I looked at both his winning run from today and the run that got him 100 in XGames in 2012, six years ago. Here are both runs

I'm too tired and lazy to count the # of spins and figure out the various axes he's spinning around (I'm sure there are more rotations and they are harder), and I'm no snowboarder and have pretty much no context to any of his tricks, but on the surface it seems kinda like the same fucking run. How wrong am I? Six years later and it looks, to the untrained eye, like the same run? The comments on reddit are jacking him off for being this innovative pioneer, but what the fuck?

Mad respect to him for all he's done and he does snowboard at a high level. I don't really follow the snowboarding scene but it seems as though he's super corporate and doesn't really care about snowboarding as a whole. Like he could do so much for the sport (and he has done so to a degree). Really the only to comparisons somewhat close to him in skiing are Tom Wallisch(and maybe Harlaut?). I can say that I've meet Tom Wallisch being from PA and he's an awsome, really kind guy, he doesn't mind taking a day and riding with kids at a shitty mountain in pa. I mean that how you inspire the next generation. It's at least better than developing a shitty video game. I guess that where many have an issue with him. Kudos to Shaun for being the best at what he does, but that still really doesn't give anyone the right to act like a jerk.

I agree that he has become an arrogant prick but its hard to not acknowledge the effects that being uber famous can have on a person. I don't know if you all remember but after the 2006 olympics, Sean White's name and face were everywhere. I think we all imagine that if we received the same fame we would stay grounded. However I imagine having to constantly live up to your own famousness would change you even if you think you are better or above it. Its hard to compare skiers to Sean since his level of celebrity is so much further than anyone in our sport. All that being said, there is no excuse for sexual assault so fuck him if that comes to be true.

From what I've read he was pushed quite a lot by his dad (may be wrong on this) and I think being pushed from such a young age results in the corporate machine that he is. If you think about tennis - The Williams sisters, Andy Murray - they all have the same attitude, win at all costs and I feel he's the same way (although they do give back to the tennis community through kids workshops etc). Then you get Red Gerard who obviously loves the sport, grew up being supported but not helicoptered and rides to have fun and puts down sick runs while doing so. Different mentalities from being brought up differently.

Got respect for him but I'm not a fan of his

It was way cleaner and more technical as well. How would you even improve that run without doing triples or some other aerial shit? I don't like the dude but he knows how to shred pipe.

They were different doubles at the beginning of the run. In 2012 he did back to back 10s, 2018 he (and hirano) did back to back 14s.

In general you are correct about the runs being quite similar. I believe you could do this for some skiers too. Runs do change with progression year to year but for the most part until someone learns a completely new trick they pretty much just build off of their previous years moves.

For me, Shaun has done so much for the progression of snowboarding and inspiring the youth the snowboard that you have to honor him as one of the all time legends of snowboarding. With that being said I don't much care for how he does the tricks and like it was said before I believe, he hasn't done much to give back to snowboarding in terms of growing the culture. But that is a personal choice of his and you can't blame him. The man is still incredibly good and the majority of all the tricks going down in halfpipe finals were done by Shaun first. For the last 15 or more years he has pretty much been the person that sets the bar for what tricks have to be done.

Totally agree that Shaun is a legend and is obviously up there for people who have pushed the sport.

But damn... dude is an absolute asshole. I know multiple people that have met him and said he was a total dick. Plus all the stories from other pros how he wont let anyone train with him, treats people like shit. Didnt he get kicked out of his own band or something? Also that story in the Crash Reel about how he threw all of Kevin Pearce's stuff out of their house when he beat him in a contest. Fuck Shaun White

Hirano shouldve won but shaun white gets judged like noone else in the world. For gods sake the guy did the easiest grab on all four of his doubles AND MISSED IT on one of them and still won. + have many friends on the canada snowboard team who have met him and all speak to me about how much of a dick he is.

It takes no effort to not be a complete ass hat. He's a sexual harasser, disliked by the snowboarding community and observably favored in competitions because of his celebrity status. Respect doesn't come from spinning and flipping on your own, it comes from how you interact with others.

You know who you should respect? Joss. Dude wins a gold medal after all sorts of people hating on him for taking Wallisch's possible spot. Then he uses his energy to make slvsh, one of the coolest websites in skiing that stays extremely in line with the core of the sport. That's what a respectable gold medal athlete looks like.

Shaun is probably the most fierce competitor skiing/snowboarding has ever seen. I realize that skiing/snowboarding isn't meant to be extremely competitive, but it's pretty clear that this guy has one thing on his mind and that's being the best/winning. He's like the Kobe or Tiger of snowboarding. Cold, disliked by a lot of teammates/peers, but only cares about winning. I don't know, I respect the guy for what he's done. Hell, if it wasn't for him and the notoriety he brought to the sport in those first Olympics, we might not be seeing slopestyle or freestyle skiing events at all.

Yeah these sports are meant to be creative and fun, but to knock Shaun for wanting to win and be the best is crazy. In any other sport we praise athletes who just want to win. Knock him on his sexual assault case and whatever else. I was personally hyped last night for the dude, one of the hardest working/determined athletes ever, much respect for what he does on a board.

I always see when pros post pics or vids of something cool Joss will always comment with something really positive - he just seems so stoked on everything in skiing - seems like a wicked guy and as you said has given a lot back to the sport

You’re assuming he was ever respected in the first place is your problem. He’s one of the rare ones who despite his celebrity, money and fame, not a lot of us envy him he’s so hated. Sports are not a charity. His case was settled and the judges gave him the highest score. Choose your reason to hate him, and step in line

Also, Joss is one of the most down to earth guys and is super humble. At the end of the day, he's a skier just like the rest of us and acknowledges that fact by being one of the nicest and encouraging skier that I've had the pleasure to meet. In my opinion, you're one hundred percent right in using Joss as a model for what a respectable person and gold medalist should be.

Appreciate the reply Saga. I simply fail to see how six years of training with every resource and facility in the world catering to his every need results in a just slightly better run than in 2012. Sure, pipe can and will only progress so much, but the guy is being lauded by the entire nation as this progression/innovation GOD and frankly, I don't see what all the fuss is about. (Has the ginger fucker ever landed a triple?)
And yes, I'm jealous that my balls aren't getting gargled by the entire USA.

It's been one day and I'm already tired of explaining to non-skiers than he's a terrible face of snowboarding. At least everyone will forget about him soon enough.

But yes, thank God skiing doesn't have a Shaun White equivalent. Skiing has many mainstream branches - racing, old school freestyle, new school freestyle - it's rather impossible for one person to be the face of the whole sport. And I'm thankful for that.

Because people will ignore ugly past events for someone as famous and "legendary" as Shaun White. The media created Shaun when he won his first olympic gold. The media continued to shove him in your face and hype him up, months before the olympics and after he won even more so. Blame the media for letting people brush off his actions and keeping the general public hidden from it.

Personally I always thought shaun white turned into a massive tool in his teens. He was awesome when he first came on the scene, but the hype turned him into a fucking douche.

I couldn't route for the guy, I hated them cutting out of other peoples runs to show him training, talking about him through other runs, giving him some ridiculous scores.

The thing is, he fucking killed it at the Olympics yesterday, and it's crazy with how much older he is. Honestly I was actually hoping he would put down a good run. I think the publicity finally getting negative, losing in sochi, and a lot of people hating on him did him some good. I haven't listened to him in any interviews or anything, and don't care to, but I was happy to see him win.

If you're starting to hate on him now because it's trendy, that's pretty weird. Honestly this is the least reasonable time to become a hater IMO.

I used to despise the dude, but what he did yesterday was amazing and I was glad to witness it. I personally think his run was the best and deserves the gold, but I can't find a slowmo replay of the top 2 runs to see what this "boot grab" is. I actually think he is one of the greatest athletes of all time, because I think it is unreal he won a gold in x-games skateboard vert twice.

Also completely disagree, if skiing had a Shaun White there would be significantly more money and opportunities in the sport now.

Ya'll hate the ones who are the fiercest competitors, yet the fiercest competitors get the headlines, headlines drive in more skiers/boarders, more skiers/boarders brings in more money to the industry, and more money keeps your 3XL outerwear/$800 park ski companies in business. I love slvsh, but some little kid with no skiing experience is never going to stumble onto it and find a new love for the sport. Seeing an Olympic athlete from his country on national news might, though. Hate him or not Shaun is helping the industry ALL OF YOU are apart of.

If you’re in position like his I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t focus some of that energy on not being such a slick ginger dick and helping the next generation come through - that’s what real progression is... Fuck it I just wanna see one of those Swedish freeski lads take Lindsay Vonn down and have some babies that turn into mad little shred units

Has anyone landed a triple in pipe other than 1 super sketch one? I thought NS hates triples why do we want them in pipe?

If you’ve worked in the industry you know there are little Shawn Whites lurking on the ski side too.

After a while you learn that just because you are professional athlete, that does not mean that your automatically a good person. I have no idea why people have such a hard time with that concept.

Also I have a big problem turning blind eye to the shitty things that people have done, or do because they are pro. It’s not the media, it’s the mountain culture. It happens with pro guides, free riders, and at the mountain as a whole. People can get away with some crazy shit on the mountain when they are a good rider or have the rep of being one.

I tried to learn the facts about this case and what I found was that she originally sued for him not paying her money she may or may not have been owed after kicking her out of the band and lost in court. Then pulled the sexual misconduct card and settled out of court... I would never defend someone who is guilty of sexually assaulting someone but from what I know he was not found guilty and the only hard evidence of anything weird is a text exchange where he asks her to wear a fishnet outfit for a concert and to cut her hair in a way she doesn't want. Which is a little weird but not criminal. I may not have all the facts right but it seems like she was after money.

On another note as I think someone else stated above I don't think there has ever been an action sports athlete anything like him not only does he have 20 something medals combined in winter and summer x games and 3 olympic golds but he has had some of the most clutch wins imaginable, clothing lines and video games made after him. What I think it is that separates him and what a lot of people perceive as being a douche is an ultra competitive mindset that are found few and far between that many times you only see in some of the greatest athletes ever and not even all of the greatest athletes have it. Don't get me wrong there are not many excuses for being rude to fans besides the sometimes there are maybe hundreds of them screaming at you for an autograph which none of us could really imagine having to deal with but I can't excuse those stories. Heres the thing though there is zero issue with him not wanting to be friends or training partners with someone or to be a dick and talk trash to any other snowboarder in the world to get in their head if it means he is going to win. I realize some people may think that sounds weird and shouldn't be the way to go about it because its not where the roots of the sport come from and stuff but no it is how you go to win 20+ medals and not just 1 or 2 medals. Its how you dominate your opponents and id imagine thats his mindset in everything he does. Do you think Michael Jordan was buddies with everyone he played with? not a chance in hell. Or Tiger Woods? Tom Brady? Kobe? Lance Armstrong? The thing is it hasn't been seen in the action sports world someone that competitive wanting to dominate so it is seen much more negative but really he is an ultra competitor and one of the most dominant athletes ever which carries into his life outside snowboarding. I also think as someone said his dad probably pushed him extremely hard and with his huge celebrity at such an early age it has to be a very hard way to grow up/

His bandmate is suing him because he was mean to her and allegedly sexually harassed her. Shaun white has been a giant douche for a long time, but this seemed like somebody trying to take advantage of that, his $$$, and status in the media for a handout.

Now it seems like he admitted guilt in the creepy thing with the young girl and paid her a settlement and she was way too young for him to be hanging out with in the first place. It was also creepy how he forced that hug on the lady trying to interview him after his run.

Yea he's definitely a douchebag but if you look at other goat worthy athletes like Tiger woods, they're pretty similar. I guess that's what it takes to be the greatest.

OregonDeadSo the more I look into it the creepier he seems. Always just kinda got the creep vibe from him anyways. Now it seems like he admitted guilt in the creepy thing with the young girl and paid her a settlement and she was way too young for him to be hanging out with in the first place. Same incident I think but what I read today said he hired the girl to play for him when she was still a teenager and some of the stuff including giving her vodka happened when she was 17. This was not a bunch of teenagers trying to start a band. The thing I read makes it seem like she was about 17 and he was 27 at the time which is really cringy so not surprising that he paid her off and is trying to keep it quiet.

skyways14I used to despise the dude, but what he did yesterday was amazing and I was glad to witness it. I personally think his run was the best and deserves the gold, but I can't find a slowmo replay of the top 2 runs to see what this "boot grab" is. I actually think he is one of the greatest athletes of all time, because I think it is unreal he won a gold in x-games skateboard vert twice.

Also completely disagree, if skiing had a Shaun White there would be significantly more money and opportunities in the sport now.

Did he give her a drink, or did he give her vodka and try and get her drunk. I've been given drinks when I was underage and done the same in a totally not creepy way.

Wasn't she suing him at first for getting kicked out of the band, money he owed her, and how she didn't like having to travel and he was mean to her? Idk, I don't remember the initial articles that well but I remember it seeming super sketch on her part, even if he was a creepy douche.
