Not feeling the drone angle for the snowboard mens pipe.
Why not just shoot the comp from the international space station. That would be super tech and cool. I guess that's what I get for not having a 350" TV.
All the other shots are good, but they're using the drone mostly, probably trying to sell sponsor drones. It's so far away though. It reminds me of playing GTA 1 or 2 in 2d.
I didn't see the run, but did White actually deserve 98.5 or whatever for his pipe run? Hard to believe someone would throw down that hard in qualifying. Or is this another one of the events where he can do hand drags and get perfect scores.
I always thought it would be cool to have a Freeride Big Mountain event at the Olympics. I know its another judged sport, and all that...But, after watching the Freeride World Tour at Kicking Horse, while at Kicking Horse...I thought it was sick to see live! I guess this would not be possible at every Olympics, considering they might not have the terrain for these comps. Maybe they only run these big mountain events at the Olympic venues that can host a Freeride world tour. This would make it extra special in those Olympic years....just a thought.

no it wasnt a 98.5 run IMO. it was really good and he got his big tricks but the score was artificially high because the judges like giving out those big scores. which i dont necessarily mind

This would be awesome, but I don't think there has been a host with a suitable venue since Salt Lake. Even then, it would be difficult to standardize freeride to the degree that other events are.
Above all, I'm sure I would be severely disappointed with the judging, commentary, etc. based on what I've been seeing this year.

I know this will come off as controversial, but I wonder how much Sean White’s theatrics and stoke level with the crowd post run plays with the judge’s scoring.

Man, I don't want to call conspiracy, but no way he deserved that score. I haven't rewatched the runs, but White's first run seemed to be a superior run to his 3rd and the Japanese's run was easily as good. His last 3rd run with a missed run and landings that warent quite as smooth as the Japanese's no way deserved that score.

I've been hearing some hate on his run but I personally think it was great. He did pull a back to back 1440 after all pretty cleanly so there's no arguing with that. I think it's a great way to cement his legacy.

I would agree, but I feel like a large part was that it was Shaun white, in the Olympic finals, who needed a certain score to win. So he got a certain score.

Unfortunately, I doubt that everyone was unbiased.
I laughed when the French commentators admitted at the end that, maybe if that wouldn't have been shaun white, and with all the press, history and celebrity associated with him, he may not have got ahead of Hirano due to how close it was. It's a shame that Olympics half-pipe does not follow more the judging line of slopestyle where style and creativity are a lot more rewarded.

Kinda, it’s an array of cameras that are all poiinted towards one centre. It’s called Time Splice. Crazy new technology for me. I’ll get a picture and show you guys tomorrow or something
They're trying to stay zoomed in more and move side to side but some of that's pretty bouncy at times and still a weird angle. Every time they cut to the guy at the bottom it's way easier to watch.

Not a drone, but a cable cam. I noticed in finals they tried to use it and failed, i doubt its as easy to use as the skycam they use for NFL games and the operator is probably not as experienced. I noticed they switched to normal cameras by the last run.

Yeah with NFL I think it works well. It gives you the overview and probably better than anything they could get. I personally prefer a lower show pointed upward in the pipe. Either with the follow guy like some comps, or the tripod guy at the bottom.
I'm just thinking on a comp this size they should have switched for the quality sooner. Even if they spent the time rigging up the cam, if it's not coming out as good, ditch it.

Yeah I mean we're talking about a TV event that involves like what 8+ locations, meaning there is a different crew at each spot, its not like their top dawgs are at every event filming it, producing, directing, etc.
Stoked they have the "I say dramatic things with an accent" guy back in the booth. Somebody get rid of that guy. Luckily the guy actually announcing is it doing a solid job.

If you don't get along leave the fucking band. Most bands have problems. If shaun white didn't have money, she wouldn't have made up shit, dramatized everything, and tried to score $$$. I personally hope she's gotten hit by a bus by now. I'm not big on the sue your way to opportunity people.

He threw a 14 into a 10, white through a 14 into a 14. Also his "missed grab" still got his fingers barely around it and held it the whole time.
I think it deserved first. And I'm a long time shaun white hater but it was a good run.

On the feed I watched they stayed cable cam till the end. I liked even the announcer was like "we'll wait for the replay because you can't really tell what they're doing and how high they're going with the cable cam"
Also they completely missed a wall of scotty james final run. Idk, the cable cam was a bold strategy for the olympics. I feel like regardless of how zoomed out it was or missing walls, it was obvious it wasn't going to look that good. IMO obviously. Just not a fan of that angle. The distance from the rider made it tough. I couldn't even tell if they were grabbing or anything.

In our defence, we're a handpicked bunch of people, this isn't a job you really apply to do. I received a phone call back in June asking if I wanted to go and work these events. I knew something was coming, since my dad had received a call just prior (we both work television), but I didn't expect to get the gig that I have.
I've given the feedback to the crew and director, the camera guys are flattered, and everyone laughed at the space station comment. It's what NBC likes. I'm sure if the director was doing his own show, you wouldn't be seeing as much cable cam.
Up at the Bokwang Phoenix Resort, where all the freestyle events are taking place, there are two OBS crews. One crew is managing the Slopestyle, Parallel Giant Slalom, and the Ski/Board cross events. The other crew (which I am on) runs the moguls, aerials, and halfpipe.
We set up the cameras and audio, as well have a director and team of people in the mobile truck running the show. There is also a separate crew that does all the specialty cameras you see (think cameras underneath the moguls jumps and such).
The people that run cameras like the rail cam or cable cam is another crew itself, which we don't work with until it's show time.
The budget for these shows are massive, and that's why there are so many different camera systems, because why not? I'm with you guys on the cable cam, it's far too wide, and should show a tighter shot on the pipe. Just remember that this is action sports, it's a lot more difficult to shoot than it looks. I certainly wouldn't want to be a director, so many things to keep track of. Nor a camera guy, guessing where the riders are going to come out of in a pipe. But this is what these guys do for a living, they love it, and they know the difficulty of it, which is what makes it so enjoyable for all of us.
I'm watching the boarderX. The sole announcer is the shitty guy, but at least skier cross is pretty easy to follow so he can just yell stupid stuff. Not anything that needs to be called right so it's all good.
I wish they'd have stuck him with this and kept him the fuck out of freestyle.

It's a sport I was always good at but never raced. I love pumping features, staying low and going fast.
On the one hand it's cool that everyone is building them, on the other hand it sucks because there are so many slow families in them. CB built a nice one last year. I waited almost a minute before dropping and still had to dodge a girl half way down.
It's good to see the sport in the olympics though. X ditched it a while ago.

It’s cool, but it’s definitley a pretty dead sport. It’s just too dangerous to be mainstream, especially in the US.

I was honestly surprised it's been in the olympics. That it even made it, and it's stayed for a couple. I wonder if the sport is big somewhere else. Def isn't in the states.
Other than some small comps boarderx courses are family crosses.
