Best Mountain Jobs

So it's that time where jobs for the Aussie season are opening, and I'm gonna do my first season, so for all you guys who have worked the resort's, what are the best jobs going around to try and get?? Thinking grooming would be pretty g, but idk if the tradeoff for ski time is worth it...

my pledge brother is a lifty at park city and loves it. grooming cud be chill as well. Id stay away from boot fitting and shit.

I’d go to New Zealand before Australia. Bigger mountains. Also good luck trying to get a grooming job. Hope your extremely skilled in that department. Super competitive down there.

Don't work at a resort. Unless you have previous experience in grooming/building parks you will likely get a bottom tier demoralizing job.

I see these guys around with jackets that say ''Ambassador of the Summit' on them. I am pretty sure they get paid just ski around and answer random questions about the mountain. Never seen any of them in a bad mood or actually doing anything.

He lives in Canberra. I think it would be more of his interest to work in Aus.

I think it depends on what you want to do. Rentals/retail is a good start, consistent hours, decent pay and non weather dependent and it's usually pretty good for first timers. The same goes for most hospo and hotel jobs. Becoming a lifty is a good option for something different but in my experience the more experienced returners get the bulk of the work and stay for the longest with newer staff starting later and leaving earlier but that is dependent on the resort and snowfall. But don't let that turn you off I have a lot of lifty mates and they love the job.

Being inside a store talking to customers when it's below freezing levels/during a snow storm doesn't suck at all. Plus you don't see people having fun on the slopes during pow days while you're working, so there's that.

Instructing is a solid gig. on my 6th season now and wouldn't trade it for anything. Tips are generally solid and can make any shitty lesson worth it. Highly recommend getting at least PSIA level 1 just so you're not stuck on the carpet all day every day.

Only thing is - in AUS and NZ, tipping is not customary. So in terms of tips for instructing, I’d probably expect that they would be pretty few and far between?

Honestly it comes down to experience and or knowing people. Some jobs get a ton of applications, if you have no relevant experience and don't know people in the department, good luck.

SKi life pays shitty but it's fun. You may have to sell drugs or your body for rent at some point.

This. You’ll only get tipped by people from North America in Aus/NZ and even then unlikely over here. Might get the odd one, but seriously doubt it.

Working in rentals is legit, especially if it’s somewhere you can learn about teching and boot fitting etc . Did that in Whistler and loved it. Super good job in terms of being able to trade and hook people up too.

I’ve got mates that work for some of the retail places and they’ve been able to work Aus/NZ/Japan off the back of that with the same company. Definitely worth exploring if you wanna chase winter. We struggle for decent boot fitters and techs over here and often people have shit knowledge so if you know about that it’s worth looking into that sorta work.

Consider too that you’re hella busy times at work will be when there’s heaps of cunts up the mountain and you probs don’t wanna ski then anyway.

Has been said but grooming etc is a hard nut to crack here, most of the lads doing that and lift maintaince etc work those jobs year in year out so can be a struggle to get into..
