eheathI would recommend not joining at frat if you got to the University of Utah, its been 6 years since I attended, but the frats we're not something you wanted to be involved in, especially if you're a skier.
mmccarthy81I was considering joining one if I attend there and am curious why you say that?

gr4I went to the U and was in a frat with a lot of skiers. Had a great time and always had people to ski with and party after. Frats at the U get a rough treatment on this site, but don't let that dissuade you. It's hard for people to speak on something they weren't a part of.
The U doesn't have quite the party scene of Boulder, but its still a really good time. I transferred to the U from a state school in New Mexico and Utah was way more fun.
eheathI had a few friends who were in frats their freshman year, they all left. Maybe things have changed, I dont know, but Frat culture is pretty fucking bad in the first place, then you take it to a commuter school in Utah and you're not necessarily getting the cream of the crop. Also, you'd be lucky to find anyone in a frat at U of U that skis, at least thats how it was when I was there and I would assume its the same now because ski people aren't really frat people, know what im saying?
I feel like HS kids think frats are how you party in college (thanks hollywood) but all you need are some good homies to party, you dont need some fake friendship club to have a good time. Just meet people in your dorm, thats how you really party in freshman year and there is a large ski population at U of U as well so you will find homies that ski, who live in your dorm, etc. Please don't join a Frat.

ChangeCashMoneyI wouldn't join a frat, just because you don't need to be in one to find parties. Going to the U will absolutely feel like the traditional college experience, it's a rad school with a decent athletics program, and a decent amount of students live on or near campus. SLC is a fun city, there are plenty of ways to have a good time. If you're a good person and proactive about making friends you'll have people to party with.
eheathThis is interesting, when I was in college, I didn't know a single skier who was in a frat, im sure I didn't know every skier of course, but that surprises me.
I'm sure your experience is much different than others who went to the U, but there is a reason frats got such a bad rap at the U, at least when I went to college. I didnt meet a single person who was a member of a frat that wasn't a huge douchebag, stuck up, arrogant pricks, every single one I met. I had a few friends who were in frats (they left after the first year) and so I did meet many different members of a few different frats (not all frats at the U, so im sure some dont suck).
I was not the only one who had this same experience, a bunch of my friends would say the same thing. But, like I said, I didnt know ever skier and I didnt know every frat member, but there is a reason U of U frats get such a bad name on NS and in general in the utah ski community.
Now that I've been out of school for awhile, I honestly could care less about frats, my 4 years of college seems like ages ago and so much more has happened in my life since then and to OP and other incoming freshman, just do whatever the fuck you want, you can ignore old people like me if you want because college is whatever you want it to be and in the end, your life in 10 years won't necessarily reflect your 4 years of college.
gr4That's like your opinion man. There were a lot of people in the greek system I didn't like but there were a lot of really good skiers and non skiers that are awesome people. You must have not ran into them. It's a big ass school with a lot of skiers. I'm just trying to break through the over-generalizations that come up on this site. Especially when its coming from NS brass.

cory.iyoobI'm probably going there too. Hyped for next year.
L-BCU boulder was my dream school. If you can afford it, definitely go there have a couple homies that had the best years of their life there. If you're a stoner you'll fit right in.
K-Dot.Isn't the drink butter page run by a frat guy? The majority of the fratter day saints are intolerable but there are some that are cool and ski a bunch
ThundercatYour probs a frat douche

SkiBum.People that go to college based on if it is a party school and the frat scene and the type of people who either will be flipping burgers in 10 years after having rape charges against them or living the life off their dads trust fund with a coke problem.
University of Utah is great because you can ride your little electric scooter down to the temple and wash away your frat sins to Mormon Jesus.
