Jernt, you are just as bad...you assumed that because she was the only black person in the school, she must have no friends.

I don't judge people on the color of there skin, but on the way they carry themselves, their demeanor, and work ethic. it just happens that many minorities fall into the negative sides of those categories... my town and high school is extremely diverse with both blacks and hispanics, and you can see the lines drawn. but when kids acted civilized and mature on both ends, it works out for the best.

I also believe that african americans along with other races still do have a very difficult life. I used to think everything was equal to, but then as I went off to school in a very urban setting, i realized things really aren't as equal as people think. I'm going to attribute this mainly to lack of education. Blacks are definitely less likely to graduate highschool. They are also more likely to get involved in drugs and crime. Teenage pregnancy among blacks is also much higher.

A lot of poor minorities (whites included) don't understand that education is power and it is something that can move you forward and give you a better life.

A lot of you are bitching because (for example) if you were attempting to enter college and you had the same grades and SAT scores as a black student, the black student would have a better chance. I can see where you are coming from. But i've accepted the fact that the black student (assuming he comes from a poor background) had to work much much harder to get the same grades and SAT scores as the white middle-class student.

Im half White Half Black and I agree with some of you about black only scholarships being unfair and such. alot of what is keeping poor black people down (as well as poor white people) is self-pitty they make excuses saying that society is keeping them down when on the contrary it is doing everything it can to help them. Black kids do not have to act hard or be part of gangs to survive since I have lived in the same neighbourhoods as them and I have never found the need to get violent or anything like that.

The reason I beleive this is because of the neighbourhood I live in. My neighboor to the right is one of the main guys on the board of Spike TV (mens channel on cable and satelite) the two houses across the street are owned by a Lawyer and the other one a doctor. and up the block is where the Vice president of Enice lives and next to him the owner of the #1 Brokerage company in the USA. all of them started in neighbourhoods with gang activity and were poor but with hard work they made it.

^^ they had to work harder??? haha, that's quite amusing. black students have to work no harder than any other race...whites included. the only thing that 'keeps the black students down', like was said above ^, is their concentration on how unfair it is being black in today's world...it's their self pity. it is also pure laziness. as soon as they turn 16 (in most states) ANY one of those black students can get a job. what do a lot of them choose to do instead? they CHOOSE to get involved with gang and drug related activity. maybe it's because they think it's 'cool' or whatever, but nothing is forced upon them except the idea that they are being oppressed. they do it to themselves and the we are supposed to give them charity. that's rather pathetic.

stepping out on a limb here, i want to say something about words. as was mentioned earlier in this thread (i believe), racial terms have become an excuse for so many things and frankly, i'm sick of hearing about it. as a fact, the term ''nigger'' or ''nigga'' no longer applies to only black people, and is in fact so common, that it should not offend anyone. granted, there are a few 'oldschoolers' (both black and white and any other color) that still take offense to it, but this is the 21st century. nothing is safe from change, words included. that word has changed meaning and has become the next 'dude' or 'man' or 'bro'. it's a term that is said so frequently in rap lyrics (

.... (yes it's cliche), and general speech among blacks.

maybe the next time i hear the term 'honkey' or 'cracker' used in the same context as 'nigger' i should cry racism and win a court case or two. maybe i'll just go to college for free. yeah, that sounds like a winner.

One Thing I hate is how your juged by how much money your parents have. a friend of mine has two dumb ass parents who are Irish Catholic and have 12 kids and both parents have pretty lousy jobs. he works and doesnt help around his house with the bills or anything yet he goes around complaining how poor he is. last year because of his poor status he got a full ride to college. he was constantly complaining about how poor he was yet he would spend $150 a week on Warhammer crap and when he learned that he was going to college for free he bought himself a brand new car.

I on the other hand my Mom has no money because she is starting a buisness in France and my dad being the prick that he is hasnt given me any money or bought me any cloth, school suplies or anything since I was 14 he gives me a place to stay and bitches at me for any reason. I got used to not asking anything from him for a couple of years since the last time I asked to borow 2 dollars and he made it seem like if he had saved my life for the following 3 months. so I refuse to ask for any help from him for college.

I;m sorry for assuming anything, but that's what I got from skiiermans description of her. I agree a lot with Grubix and the fact that knowledge is power. I volunteered in a inner-city school full time for a year in west philadelphia. At times i was so sadened by the fact that the community as a whole was not supportive toward education, it wasn't as if parents didn't want their kids to get one and better themselves but the community as a whole made these kids live to survive. Kids are kids no matter what race you are and kids can be mean. Foe this reason, many of the bright kids would have to get tough and not strive for education but rather acceptance into their community.

The inner-city in many time poor and has very few role models to look to accept those who look as though they are doing well through monitary wealth. I think I'm kinda off track of this whole thread but oh well.

Once again I admit that I struggle with stereotypes and will in no way try to declare myself as free from them. What has changed about this thread is the fact there is healthier conversations. Everyone has stereotypes, we just need to accept it and try to work through it.

Jernt, everybody is a slave to stereotypes in one way or another, people just cant help it. It's been a part of human culture forever, and as evolved as we like to think we are in our 'equal rights' attitude, there are very few people that don't have any stereotypes in their mind.

i agree with the stereotypes thing. however, the mention of 'equal rights' brings mixed emotions.

i truly believe that every single human being deserves to be treated equally in just about every sense. but, what i can't stand is the people who 'fight' for equal rights for blacks/hispanics/asians/etc. it doesn't make any sense. you obviously can't do anything about how people feel or what they do/say in their own homes, that's freedom of speech. but, laws in the united states have already stopped all forms of racism in the workplace, schools, and any other public place. they have made it illegal. some people may say ''yeah but it still happens behind closed doors in all of those situations.'' okay. sure, i believe it. but if the person who's being discriminated against does nothing about it, they are giving up a right that they have and it is then their fault if nothing happens.
the equal rights activists have gone above and beyond the 'equal rights' point. they want special treatment (i.e. the special college scholarship programs, using accusations of rasicm to get ahead, etc.) and therefore, are implying that they are NOT equal. if we were all equal, where's the united WHITE college fund (vs. united negro..)? where's WHITE history month? Where's HISPANIC history month? where's our right to have W.E.T. (vs. B.E.T. tv)? granted the accronym would probably get confused with a porn channel, but that's beside the point.
these are just a few examples of how racism plays the other way. when one group of people (blacks in this case) thinks they deserve special treatment because of the color of their skin, that's racist...no matter how you look at it.

Shaggy, I think you restated my point exactly. Everyone has stereotypes, just realize it and try not to live by them. No one should have to be judged based off nothing other than appearance or anything. It suck finding myself as i drive and someone else does something stupid and I quickly put them in a category of people because of a bumper sticker they might have. That's not fair to me and not fair to them.

All I'm asking for is that this thread might help people realize what stereotypes are in their lives and fight them.

What I funny is how there were blacks who had black slaves in Africa long before white folks enslaved them. Also, regarding the comments about it being harder for black people than white, they have to help themselves, anybody can get an education and a good job, black or white, but they have to put forth the effort to do it.
