I've ridden a fuckton of skis and made some others that were fun to ride so I just wanted to ask NS what your favorite pow sticks are/were and why? I have an unhealthy obsession with buying fat skis but some of my favorites are dumb, overly big sticks that are too fun everywhere on the mtn so I'm looking for more terrible reasons to possibly expand my already too big quiver.
I'll start off:
For me its the Icelantic Gypsy/ Nomad 125 (Same ski, just had a name change). Its a pretty waisty ski but for its size, its mindbogglingly maneuverable. Plus its softer flex pattern makes it fun in deep powder as well as just normal soft groomers. Full rocker with a flatter underfoot gives it awesome pivot-ability but when you really lay down into a turn the edge engages super smoothly in some nice GS turns. Gonna buy the 190cm version one of these days as a fat cliff stomper but the 180cm is perfect as a pow/fatty daily. Rode it almost 70 days in the 16/17 season and have no regrets.
nomad and gypsy arnt quite the same from what ive heard, nomad has slight camber under bindings. im 6'1" and 150lb my current pow ski is a folsom custom 190cm x 130mm almost full rocker with very slight camber or flat underfoot(dead center), the ski is not symetric but has a tapered, slightly stiffer, and slightly less rockered tail but its designed to be center mounted for swing wait. this ski is fun in all terrain, because its center mounted u really need the extra length but it floats in anything over 15cm perfectly, they are actually pretty fun in the park too. oh did i mention they are softer then vishnu's or afterbangs but they weigh barely anything compared to other fattys. other skis: all the new full rockered matching sidecut skis like volkl 108 and skis from moment and 4frnt are sick, ive only tried the volkl but they are fuckin sick and ski like a dream, pretty sure they are the stiffest of those ^ 3. the extremely stiff poppy flex means that when u carve they flex past the rocker, the harder you carve the more you flex the ski and the more the sidecut flexes giving you shorter turn radi. something about those 108s just skis effortlessly and puts u perfectly where you wanna be every time. im looking forward to trying the volkls, moments. before my folsoms i had older jjs, they were sick, my first fattys but the tips would always try and swing under each other, heard they fixed that. I also worked t WB's demo center last year so ive ridden some others too. id like to see skis follow the new wacky snowboards, more tapered but center set, and actually weighted evenly, wider and shorter for reduced swing weight with maybe magna traction underfoot like lib tech or underbite like yes. snowboarding is kicking our asses for funky/inovative shapes so check em out.

You’re thinking of the Nomad 115, the 125 has a flat underfoot and is a renamed version of a pow ski they’ve had since 2011 or 2012. That being said, your Folsoms sound sick man! I’ve been wanting to make a ski like the k2 Pontoons but with a softer flex and maybe wider dimensions as a dumb hyper fat ski but we’ll see where that one goes. I did end up making a pair of skis that are just like your folsoms but the dimensions were 182cm x 106mm underfoot. They are hella tapered tho and have a dumb soft flex so they’re perfect for springy park laps or just as a light snow jib ski.
As for the snowboard design, I’ve been looking into that for a bit now. Jones’ boards along with the Nitro Quiver boards and the Spring Break pow boards all have intreaguing shapes that I would be down to see on skis. Spring Break Catamaran is definitely one of the weirder ones but it still looks pretty cool haha.
Check out never summers, burtans, rides war pig is really dope, yes pick your line, step child 420, lobster random addition is super rad, most snowboard companies are doing a volume shift pow board these days, I’m actually working at a snowboard shop these days lol, ironic cause I’ve only really snowboarded like 15 days. I also made a pair of skis they are in 94’s thread as well, madd respect for urs dude, ur the guy who made all wood skis right? And all those crazy creative shapes, that one with the asym reverse side cut on the outside n traditional side cut on the inside seems rad I’d love to try something like that. Maybe with a bit of yes snowboard style under bite, or manga traction on the outside just in case, I’m not sure I fully dig the asym consent for skis, makes tons of sence on a board cause your body is asym heal to toe but I feel like it’s less asym left to right??? My skis I made were 144,114,144 x 173 with supershort sidecut and tapered tip and tail, cherry wood veneer in the top sheet gave them a shit ton of pop I would strongly recommend giving that a shot, if u haven’t. They are one of the best shapes for everything, park or pow. short for swing weight but wide and with tons of rocker In The tip and tail for float. I actually started building them when I was younger and shorter so they are kinda to small but it turns out the length is really nice cause they are still super stiff, and it makes em better for park, too bad they are really heavy
I've been skiing the Black Crow Atris and I can say I'm a HUGE fan. I've never owned a pair of Black Crows before but I can now say they are my favorite skis. The Atris being a 107 underfoot is really nice because it's wide a floaty in pow but still narrow enough to get down a groomer without too much work.
Rode AK JJ's for the past two years and fucking loved them, the 195 length kept em relatively damp and stableish, and could still lean em over on the groomers. Don't even get me started on the slush slashing pond skimming ability. But got some 4frnt cols this year and fuck these things are so sick. Super quick and stable and really poppy
My favorite Fat Ski is the 185 Volkl Chopsticks. Everyone is sleeping on them. With an underfoot of 128mm you got me confused with someone that doesn't like his skis like his women; Thicccc. I mean they are thick to the point where I need to make sure there are no children present when I rip them out for they may develop frostbite, bitterness, and hate on the funnest, most impractical ski in Michigan.
The real reason I love the Chopsticks though is for two reasons; the top sheet/base combo along with the how impractical they are. I havethe 2011 or 2012 model topsheet/base where its a "Sumo" dude with chopsticks and sushi rolls everywhere. Super fun and to me its unique since I haven't seen another pair. Secondly how impractical they are. They are Heavy, clunky, I always get some splinters from carrying them, but I never been on something so soft, noodly, buttery, and just fun.
