Help me find the right powder ski, PNW skier.

Profahoben_212Billy goats are an amazing powder ski.

They were my powder ski for tahoe last season on the insane year....never had float issues. You won't either.....a great ski and the newer versions are even better.

Another good option would be the sego prospect 120.....lots of rocker and very floaty. Playful and caoable in chop too. If you have any questions on either of these I can help you out!

Profahoben_212Sego prospect 112 and sloppy joe. Disclaimer....i work for sego, but I wouldn't be giving shit recommendations about them;).....i try to give as non-biased info as I can. The 120 version of the prospect shares the same rocker profile if you would like a photo. Super floaty with hetfy tip rocker and a nice long tail rocker. Unfortunately, my Billy goats are the previous seasons so my photos would be different than the current model. But from what I have heard they have only gotten better.

Peach.Seconded on the billy goats. That ski is more well-rounded than it's dimensions would suggest.

If you're happy on the Bacon I'd suggest exploring the Mordecai. I've taken it into truly bottomless 30+ inches while cat skiing and never felt like I needed more float out of it. I also routinely jump on them when it hasn't snowed in 6 or 7 days. It's replaced my 100-108mm ski in my quiver because it's just that much damn fun on the rest of the mountain. It's stiffer than EP skis of yesteryear which is probably why when skied from a centered stance you can really ride out of some hairy situations with a dangerous amount of confidence.

It's also the quickest most pivoty ski I own thanks to the combination of tip/ tail rocker, taper, and a very short turning radius for a ski of that size.

So, if that sounds appealing to you I'd look into it. You can nab older versions for a still online.

DirtyDirtNastyI am happy with the Bacons the only thing I have been somewhat unhappy with, is it's performance in chop. It just wants to bounce around chop which is very fun but also very tiring when I ski all day. I am thinking that the Mordecai would share similar traits, as in the ski would like to bounce around and be playful in chop? Also the top sheets on my Bacons have gotten beat up and I've only skied them like 10 days this season. I attribute that more to their 2017 top-sheet which has kind of a weird flat black finish to it though rather than the build quality of Line. I am leaning towards the Billy Goats right now just because of how universally praised they are.

DirtyDirtNastyDid you ski switch at all on the Billy Goats. Not that it would be a deal breaker, but I was curious how that would work considering they are asymmetrical and there is a left and right ski? At least i think there is for 2018? Correct me if I am wrong. I don't ski switch very much anyway, but was curious.

Peach.I expected similar results in chop out of my Mordecai's.

You'll get tossed around in chop plenty but I've found them to be drastically better than the redesigned Bacon. And 100 times better than the original Opus.

The Billy Goats will almost certainly be better in chop than the Mordecai's no matter who's on them. They'll also be way less playful. ON3P makes a lot of really playful skis but the Billy Goat isn't one of them. That ski likes to charge. Especially some of the older iterations.

Profahoben_212No switch on them for me....they have a twin that was ridable switch (at least my version)......but I wouldn't actually suggest riding switch....especially not in pow. Very squirmy switch with the RES. Not a ski to be rode switch on purpose.

Billy goats are pretty much the go to for chop and soft snow skis. On3p killed, and has been killing it with that ski.

DirtyDirtNastyYa, that is kind of what I suspected from the Mordecai's. I am also trying to minimize crossover between skis if that makes sense. So while my Bacon's are playful and somewhat jibby I would like my powder ski to have qualities that my Bacon's don't have, such as the ability to charge/float on powder/bust through crud. That way I can have 2 different skis with different riding styles depending on what I feel like doing that day. If I feel like being playful on a certain day and want to pop off every feature and ride switch I'll grab my Bacon's, but I need a different ski that can do other things that my Bacon's can't like really float on powder, bust through crud, and weave through trees. That's why I am leaning towards the Billy Goats but wanted to get everyone's opinions first.

Peach.In that case, you're gonna love the Billy Goats. The defining attribute to the Billy Goats for me was how incredibly stable they were.

Do you have any experience with the Moment Bibby skis? How do you think those would stack up in our conversation?

DirtyDirtNastyAwesome! Do you think 116mm is going to be wide enough for a dedicated powder ski though. I mean I'm sure I will ride them on days where there's not a ton of powder. But the whole reason I'm looking for another ski is I want something that really performs well in the powder.

Profahoben_212The bibby is a twin.....but one of the more chargy twins out there. It's a freestyle ski with backbone and a lot if history. Never rode it personally though....so I'll leave it at that....but blister has some very good reviews about them.


Yes. They are bred for the powder....specifically PNW powder. Since you are in the PNW....stop by the ON3P factory. Some great dudes there and they would love to demo some skis. Also, I'm sure they have plenty of demo stops around the PNW if you are unable to make it to the factory!

DirtyDirtNastyThanks for the info about the Bibby. I have a hard enough time just going forward in powder. I'm still learning how to ride in deep powder, which is why I am wanting a dedicated ski to make it a little easier haha. So doesn't sound like I'd really be taking advantage of the Bibbys considering I don't plan on riding switch on powder days. But they do sound like a fun ski.

I am having a hard time finding anyone close to where I live that demos ON3P skis but I will call around tomorrow and look at ON3Ps website for their demo days tour.

Also about the RES and asymmetrical stuff with the Billy Goats. Does that mean you have a right and left ski?

Profahoben_212yes. The asymmetrical means that on this seasons ski there is indeed a left and a right ski. The RES is different though. RES stands for Reverse Elliptical Sidecut, and is pretty different from most other skis, as such, it also makes what makes the Billy such and easy and fun ski. It is a reverse sidecut from the center of the ski to the tip, and allows the ski to pivot and smear in the soft snow, then has a traditional sidecut from the center of the ski to the tail for grip. (ON3P could might in with more information on RES/correct me if im wrong)

SessionI will second this. And I have owned both. I would be happy with either. You will get plenty of float, and crud busting ability will be better than anything you have skied before.

Enough underfoot for float in versatile conditions... true dedicated powder skis, even holds an edge on groomers extremely well for being a powder ski. Mount about +1.5-2cm from recommendation and you can turn them on a dime. Its Tanner's promodel pow ski for a reason
