Where should freestyle skiing be going?

This is something I think about a lot, should freestyle skiing continue in the path its headed down? always trying to break the record of flips or spins of a jump? or should the goal be going as big as possible with simpler steezier tricks with dope grabs instead of doing cork 7 to quad back flip mute?

I don't think it needs to be forced into a direction. Hopefully riders will do what they want and what they are stoked on doing... self expression. rather than trying to appease the masses.
that being said, i'd prefer simpler. style wise i think it looks cleaner. and i don't have to figure out how many flips, spins, twists, where'd they grab, what direction they're facing.. then name the trick. ... but hey, just my opinion

I agree, no need to force it in any direction.... I should have said where would people like to see it go not where should it go.

i think it could be interpreted either way, now that i read it again. just what i thought at first pass.
how do you think progression will be dictated?
is it dictated by the role of the judges and scoring in competitions (everyday mountain comps to Olympics/xGames/Etc.) or is it dictated by the riders in your group (friends deciding what they like)?

This is pretty well sad. But I think that progression should always be at the forefront with style. Who cares if you have unique style if you can only do simple tricks on small features?

Skiing fast and going massive should never go out of style. The day that we lose those two things (new wave is currently killing them), we are truly ruined.

I think progression will be defined differently for each skier. If skiing keeps going in the current direction will the progression plateau? The human body can only with stand so much and people are already doing quad corks so when will the quad be shown up? or will it ever be? Has the profession in skiing already began to plateau ?

I said nothing about doing simple tricks on small jumps. In. my opinion I think it is way cooler to do switch cork 10 bow n arrow grab on a massive jump or even a cork 7 venom then a quad cork 18 mute. The quad, while very impressive, is just robot style and its just adding another flip to a triple. There is nothing creative about that

I agree with you. A switch cork 10 bow n arrow would be fucking gnarly, don't know if I have ever seen one

I agree that skiing fast and going massive should never go out of style but going massive with a quad is so much less creative then doing a super funky unique dub with a crazy grab, while still going massive . The new wave is bringing creativity back into freestyle skiing. the sport needs more creative tricks instead of the classic comp jock tricks being done over and over again with more spins and flips being added to them

Yeah I agree with your general point, unique dubs and cork 7s with cool grabs and all that are a lot cooler than quads in my book.
New wave tricks suck though - i am not a fan of quads... but I would rather see a quad/am way more impressed when I see a quad than when I see some dude shuffling around in a track suit. New wave riders are not known for skiing fast and going massive on XL features, that is what I don't like about it. But I regress, that horse has long been beaten to death.

I really feel that we need to get away from breaking the record of flips/spins. The reason being that Freestyle Skiing already went down that road once... and the heavily regulated sport of Aerials is what came out of it. That happened, because eventually professional skiers started dying / getting paralyzed in competition.

Only takes a few of these happening, and we're toast. If you saw Colby Stevenson's crash on the Dew Tour Live stream, it was dangerously close to being a neck breaker.

More flips = radically increased risk of neck injury... then the insurance companies ruin everyone's fun.

As a new wave skier, I can't agree with this more. Skiing fast is bad, and if you ski fast, you should feel bad. We're actually in secret partnership with Vail yellow jackets. It's all a part of a grand scheme to ruin skiing, for everyone, forever.

I read a transworld article a couple of years ago where they tried to calculate how many corks were physically possible for a specific snowboarder on a medium-large jump (around 80 feet). After all of the math was worked out they said if everything was perfect a sextuple cork was possible. Im not sure how that translates to skiing in terms of the ideal setup. My point is, if a snowboarder and possibly a skier could do a sextuple cork then we still have a long way to progress. Im not saying it is the direction we should be going, im just saying there is a lot more progression possible.
