What I thought was funny was he called Gus a "multi-sport athlete" because he skis pipe and slope. Pretty sure they are both the same sport, skiing.

Was not trying to mock him, I have much respect for LVV. I have just never hear slope and pipe referred to as two different sports. I don't agree with OP's opinion of LVV. I just heard him say that in yesterdays broadcast and I though it was funny. Baseball and basketball are two different sports, but park and pipe are the same sport but different disciplines.

This might just be me but it annoys me when they use "cab" to describe tricks, since there technically isn't a skiing equivalent to it.

Theres no such thing as a 1090, there’s a 990 and an 1170.

Gotta agree with you here. There's a minimum bar that is not being met. If you can't tell that Dollo's switch triple is a triple, and say that everything is either a cork or a flatspin, I start to wonder if you've even been paying attention in the last ten years. Axis names no longer matter much, nothing is strictly defined, and everything is a shade of grey. Welcome to 2017 LVV. But I do always enjoy his enthusiasm. I don't think they should drop him, but they should add in another person who will get this stuff right. And it wouldn't be hard. There are a ton of random people who could call the tricks better. Shit I'd do it just for the experience. Put me up in a hostel and give me passes and access and I will be stoked as fuck to be in that booth.

You did count right. It was a 990. If you want to watch it again the front page has that Armada Team Story with the Tanner GoPro follow footage.

First run was a front 810 where he lands forward. Next run he lands backwards from the extra 180 hence the front 990. Quinn also says “how did I even do that” right after.

Still dont understand how LVV gets it wrong and hen the other guy just repeats him saying wow a 1090.

They should just have a big chart listing all the 180 degree rotations. Then a chart listing all the 90 degree variation rotations.

Or they should just have figured it out by now. I mean people have been throwing 810s and 990s for quite a while.

I think the only time I felt smart in math in HS was doing something that had a bunch of those involved and I already knew them all. People were like "wow" but really it was just like "sorry I ski and snowboard".

Nothing is worse than the announcers at Sochi. Shit, the Sochi announcers were worse than Russia's ski slopestyle "athletes" who straight aired everything. I literally wanted to pull my hair out the whole event. The judging was quite inconsistent also.

I couldn't find the actual footage, but this recap pretty much sums it up. The skiers had lots of "grabs" and "rotations".

I find it funny how the reporters called Miguel Porteous' supe pipe run "too much fun not enough business" like shut the fuck up haha. He got on the podium at 3rd and had a dub in the mix like wut.

Wallisch was announcing at the event or did you miss the "TO THE MOOOON!" comments in the background?

LVV is a thousand times better than Mike Douglas and the other douche who was announcing. You kids are fucking spoiled. He does a good job of announcing tricks while trying to appeal to the gapers who watch the broadcast. Yes, I know its shocking but you are not core and neither is the sport so the announcers need to appeal to who is watching.

Watch Brad Jay announce a MTB slope comp. and thank your lucky stars we don't have someone like that. He used to forget names and just say stupid catch-lines 80% of the time. It got so bad that I trashed him on every thread and then I had the opportunity to give him advice which you may view below.

I agree with OP, i can hardly do a 270 out but I know for a fact that QWolf was way beyond a 630 on that last rail spin. Pretty embarrassing that a pro like LVV cant read these tricks better. Henriks triple was clearly a triple like idk maybe he spliffs it up too much

have you guys ever tried that job? next time turn on dew tour and try and do commentary on a run where the skier is literally doing a new trick every 5-7 seconds. god forbid the camera angle changes, your brain barely has enough time to figure out the rotation direction, amount of spins, axis, and grab and make it interesting in the time it takes for a trick to be landed. Hes entertaining to listen to imagine a commentator, which ive had friends do, just calling out the tricks without any bit of "colour commentating". shoot me in the fucking head.

Been wondering the same thing, definitely a gnarly crash but heard he hurt his shoulder and got a concussion is all luckily.
Also curious if he was flipping the bird to the Toyota/butter box before the jump and exactly why...not a fan of the product placement or advertising or something?

Clean knock out in the 2nd round of the match ;)

He suffered a concussion and a separated shoulder. His brain is all good and his shoulder just needs rest, no surgery. He'll be back to normal in probably less than a month.

I could be wrong but wouldn't the commentators get a screen from each cameraman so they don't get shots cutting out midway? Yea, whoever is doing the mixing or whatever you call it for switching shots kinda sucks and you rarely see a complete trick on the jumps.

I agree, and since I don't know the names of all the tricks myself, I don't sit and analyze him. All I know is I really enjoy listening to him alot! I think he's great.

I couldn't call but a few "tricks", still some folks said they would like to listen to my stoke as stupid as I am.
So if the guy entertains, that should be enough.

you have low standards. LVV is a great color commentator but his play-by-play is lacking, which is surprising.

yes, i could very easily (correctly) call every trick in each person's run. and in any case where i wasn't sure i would know to not label it or id at least express my uncertainty on it rather than just calling it something wrong. even a "wow that trick was so technical i'm unsure what it was" is more constructive than that

no man this isn't some new concept, it's been done a trillion times. generally sports like football have two commentators, one who is the analytical expert and another who brings levity and "color" commentary. it's not a lot to ask for one of the people to be able to identify tricks correctly. LVV is great at the entertaining part of course

you have a personal bias that you don't particularly care "exactly how many spins etc" but that's really not material here... that's like some random football fan saying he doesn't really care about one of the commentators knowing the more detailed rules or something. it's 100% relevant and it's completely reasonable for the viewer to expect that level of expertise from a commentator

yeah well im a ski nerd and have followed skiing since around 1999 so ive had the benefit of getting to keep with it as things progressed from 3s, 5s, occasional 9s and 10s etc to wild shit like trip 18s and 990s out haha

re: your second paragraph, oh yeah man agreed totally. and that's why the 2 commentator roles are important to fill adequately. with a good pairing, everyone from die hard fans to casual viewers can be engaged and entertained while watching the same broadcast


i wanna reiterate that i got mad respect for LVV and i think he's a good color commentator. it's just that blowing the trick calling is a kind of glaring and easy-to-fix problem. i know it's a tough job to stay on top of
