Addicted to buying ski gear...

I think im addicted to buying ski gear. I usually buy 4-5 pairs of skis per season. Jackets and pants beyond belief. I built a new closet in my basement just for ski outerwear.
I have 5 pairs of skis, 2 pairs of jesters, 3 pairs of fks/pivots and 4 pairs of boots. I would buy more if I found a good deal.
I do the same every season. I average 5 pairs of skis and 5-7 pairs of bindings per season.
Anyone else have the same problem?
I also do the same for mountain biking.

Interesting. First off, what do you do for a living because Holy fuck that's a lot of money? Second, do you sell your stuff every year? Shouldn't you have like a million skis by now averaging 5 per year? Why do you have 5 pairs of boots? Are they all the same boot, or do you have a different boot for each ski?

I'll take gear off your hands if you run out of space and it's too burdensome. I'll just pay shipping :)

As far as addiction to buying new gear, I'm more of a here and there kind of purchaser. Every year I think, great now I have all that I need. Then I go buy more stuff the next year.

I keep what I really like and sell what I am not into. I have so many boots because my friends are free loaders and know they can count on me to have boots and sticks for them. Boots are usually cheap to buy used and throw my liner in and try them out. They are expensive to ship so I dont sell them.
As for a job, I make a good income now that Im old (I have multiple incomes). But I have been like this since college. I would work my ass off to buy ski gear. Now I buy more new stuff since I have graduated but its the same process.
But Im married now so I cant keep as much of a surplus. I once had a thought to open a used ski gear online business. It likely wouldnt have worked out how I wanted but it would have fed my buying and selling addiction.
As for taking gear off my hands, I have a few pairs of skis, helmet and bindings Im giving away free locally. Come to Michigan and they are yours.

Woa wait... 4-5 pairs per season? Dude, thats way more than what I do. Every year, I need a new pair and every second year I have to replace another two. But I get in 120days a season here and own 5 pairs. (Touring, Big Mountain, Alpine, Park and a spare big mountain skis)

But if your like a friend of mine who trades a lot, I can see you constantly replace the gear.

Get married. My wife slows my buying activities but I still buy so much. I have to explain my way out of the j skis that are being delivered today.

I'm the opposite. I have 1 pair of skis, same boots for 6 years now. I do have a lot of clothes tho tall ts, hoddies, jackets but only one pair of pants that I've used for what seems like for ever

So thats most of my problem with outwear. If I find things that fit properly, I buy them even if I dont need them.
As for skis, you reach a point of no return. I usually ski 185ish skis. Any longer and they just get heavy and impractical for daily drivers. I do have some 190+ skis but they arent nimble.

Get some ON3P 19x or 204 Factions.. get off those small things. You're a foot taler than me and I ride 185ish for my longest ski

I see it as you can have multiple pairs depending on where and what you like to ski.

-Skinny frontside skis for groomers, bumps, and ice
-All mountain ski for everyday use
-Park skis to trash em
-Mid fat skis or fat skis for pow


I have 3 pairs accumulated over a few years. My skinny skis (first skis I bought), park skis (mine are useless anywhere but park even though I take them all over the mountain), and mid-fat skis. Also I'm a believer in if you can afford it, go for it and have different skis. If you can't afford multiple skis, just get an all mountain ski that will work in most conditions where you ski most.

Dude I'm like 5'9" and my daily drivers are 182s and 184s

If I want skis the height normal people buy them in relation to their height, I would need like 230cm skis. No matter how tall and strong you are, try skiing trees or anything other tham straight.
Like I said, there is a point of no return. 180-190 is still skiable. I have owned 203cm skis and they were fun chargimg skis but thats it.

I have to agree here. At 6'8", a ski as tall as him would be 203cm (not 230). There has to be a size curve that levels off eventually because agility will become compromised at a certain point. I would love to see someone rocking 230cm (yes 230) skis haha.

Look around when you're skiing. Most people aren't rocking 180+ skis, even though many of us ride or recommend them all the time. I love my long skis, but there are some tree days where I wish they were a little smaller.

As said above, It doesn't depend on how many days you ski, its how you ski. For me, I have a pair for park, all mtn, cruddy days, chopped powder, deep powder, and touring as well as a few random pairs thrown in there. I could definitely stand to get rid of a few pairs as 70% of my skis are above a 116 waist but they all have different uses for me. I also have two pairs for early season with one of them having over 20 core shots in them because why not? Im not saying everyone should have a pair of skis for every situation but if you can find a good enough deal on some then why not get them? I think the most i've ever spent of skis has been 450 and thats because I needed skins on top of the 350 I spent for the skis + bindings. 90% of my skis barely cost over 200 dollars for the set. I guess its just what you're willing to spend to have fun for every condition.

Plus if you find something and don't like it, then re-sell it and get your money back. Skis hold value if they're in good condition and they're a good size for the general public. 175-190cm seems to be the ticket for prime resale lengths and since all my skis are in the 180-187cm range, I can still get okay value for them if I take good care of my equipment and decide to sell.

To clear things up, I buy almost all of my stuff used. Maybe one pair of new skis per season. I just like trying different dimensions, rockers, sidecuts etc.
I normally ski about 50 days a year minus last season. I also average 1 or 2 ski vacations a year now.
I just like good deals and tryung new things out. Its why I own 7 properties too (6 are income properties).

i over bought hard the last 2 saga spring sales. Going so sell a bunch of stuff to people at work for cost. Trying to downsize my life but those deals got the best of me.

I mean, who doesn't need 12+ pair of gloves/mittens, 5 pair of pants, 5+ winter jackets, 4+ hoodies, etc.

Length all depends on where and what your skiing. I’m like 5’6” and I rock 181 out in Utah skiing little cottonwood. I wouldn’t use anything that long if I was back east, or even in park city really.

You're not taking weight into account - if you're 6'8" and 350lb, a 230cm tank wouldn't be that bad.
