Trump and Hillary both have their flaws but Hillary is retarded, I’m happy she wasn’t elected. Let’s also remember the democrat party doesn’t have such a progressive and bright past, the KKK was founded by Democrats who were pissed that their side lost and their slaves were gone. Democrats wanted slavery and the Republican Party made efforts to protect former slaves. Democrats supported Jim Crow laws and supported lynchings of black people in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Yes, I should have mentioned that everything has switched in the past 70 years but what I’m saying is the Democrats had a very dark and racist past.

Naw they never switched, look it up I think only 1 representative and 2 senators switched. They all remained democrats until end of there careers hence even some with great influence. That’s why they were called the “Dixiecrats”. What did switch was voting tendencies in geographical regions of the United States.

It was some small number like that.

The pre-1930 Democratic party was dominated by segregationists in the South while the GOP tended to be northern liberals. But the switch between the two bases didn't happen over night, or even in one election. It took decades.

First, slowly but surely, some northern liberals started to associate with the Democrats while the GOP had people, what we now call conservatives, from the western part of the country joined the party.

Then came FDR and his New Deal. Unsurprisingly, he faced a lot of opposition from the Southern Dem's on two issues: civil rights and unions. Up until this point, neither party truly held a strong platform position on civil rights like they do today. It often fell to the wayside. FDR's (and the Democratic) idea of liberalism was focused more on the economic side of things while the GOP still held the economic conservative views they do today.

So for a period of time you had a Democratic party that was comprised of both white southern conservatives and liberal African Americans (and some whites) from the north.

When Truman came to be President, he instituted a major change with regards to civil rights; he wanted to protect black voting rights and desegregate the military. He found almost immediate support from the liberal Democrats while the southern conservative Democrats became the Dixiecrats. This was the first time the liberal Democrats took part of the Democratic platform over. They now had a stronghold on race-relations.

However, both parties needed the southern white vote so it wasn't until JFK and Lyndon B. Johnson that the Democratic party began to see a massive switch. LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act into law but needed the help of the GOP Minority Leader of the Senate to get the bill through as the Southern Dems were blocking it at every chance they got.

It was during this time period where the GOP began to adopt what had formerly been Southern Democratic views. Barry Goldwater, the 1964 GOP presidential nominee, voted against the Civil Rights Act (only because he opposed federal intervention to achieve integration) and as such carried 4 Deep South states. The original Dixiecrat Senator, Strom Thurmond, became a GOP member after this election. Southern conservative voters quickly followed.

But it wasn't until the next generation of Congress members that the switch truly occurred. Hell, it took almost into the 1990s for it to be complete.

But the argument that the Democrats are the racist party is a Dinesh D'Souza (and general Trumptard/current GOP) talking point that really falls flat on its face when dissected.

Personally, I don't both debating politics on NS anymore.

Firstly, I hardly post anymore because of work.

Secondly, the average NS member can't really expand on their political views.

I know I was that way when I first started posting. Way back in 2012 most of my political posts came from what I heard at dinner or around my family friends.

That makes it really hard to have a conversation based off policy rather than generalizations. All you have to do is look a few comments up to see the statement "Hillary is retarded" and no explanation on why the poster holds that view.

Anyways. Back to lurking. Hope all on NS are doing well.

I see where you’re coming from, true a lot of politicians from both sides are to blame. Just seems republicans lean A LIL more on a positive note in history compared to a Democrats. I also hate how people associate Trump with Republicans, he’s neither. He’s bashed the republicans multiple times and only ran because it was the only way to get elected. But I still don’t buy the whole point the democrats are the more righteous party. LBJ was a racist so many tapes of him saying haneous things about minorities as well why did they use them to fight the frontlines of the Vietnam war. Carter reduction of social programs, and not advocating bigger budget for the demanding need by minorities. Clinton incarceration, there’s to many examples that the “Democrats” aren’t really there to help minorities but use them as a boost in voting and clout. Republicans have had some shaky things as well, but the deception isn’t as bad when it comes to the dems.
