just so you know, you gmail account gets spidered (crawled for keywords and infomation) so that you can be advertised to more directly. if you pay to up your account level however you can turn it off.
gmail is not recommeneded for this reason. yes, your email is catalogued and NOT private on gmail.

it's not junk mail.
it's that text advertising you see on the right side of the page when you read email.
it scans the email and puts in advertising that is related to the subject of the email.
I still use gmail though, I don't really care, it's not like anything sensitive goes through my email.

vantownloc is wrong. Your account is not spidered. The text based ads appear in the exact same way that they appear when you use Google search. It reads the words on your email, then generates the ads based on that. It isnt spidered or crawled or anything else.
