What are you doing now?

Grew up in Toronto, moved to BC when I was 19. I'm an electrician living in Nelson, working throughout Western Canada, usually Northern Alberta and BC. No wife, no kids, I travel around a lot for work and spend a lot of my time off in Revelstoke.

How old were you when you first started on NS?

13 looking at ski reviews for my first set of twin tips, I lurked here for a while before finally making an account in 2004. I'm 28 now.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?

I'll never quit skiing. It's my one true love. All my motivation to make money and be healthy stems from the core idea that I want to keep skiing at a high level for as long as I can. So far I've progressed my skiing every consecutive year so it seems to be working out for me. My main inspiration these days is Delorme, dudes like 35 and still blowing minds.

I did however quit the ski industry, I realized I wasn't going to be able to fund my ideal lifestyle off ~$20/hour. I switched things up career wise when I was 24 and feel pretty good about it.

Read back some of your old post histories, what do you think of them today?

It's funny, sometimes an old thread from the 2000's will pop up and I'll think of a reply... only to read through the thread and find out I already replied a decade ago and said pretty much the same thing.

There's definitely a fair amount of cringe worthy posts, but come on I was a kid.

I lurked NS for a year or so before I made an account in 2004. I was 15 at the time.

3. Did you quit skiing? If so, why?

Hah, no. I skied a bunch in college, ski bummed for almost four years in Lake Tahoe, and still managed to ski when I was in law school. It was tough but i still got like 15-20ish days in. I ski way more now that I'm done with that nonsense.

4. Read back some of your old post histories, what do you think of them today?

I was unnecessarily mean to others who love the same thing I did. Kinda like people hating on the bunch these days. At the end of the day skiing is a silly (and super fun) pastime so don't let strong opinions take over and separate you from others.

I was getting so excited about being able to claim 2001, but then Drail had to come in and wreck the show...

As of a month ago, I am currently working as a digital producer for a company that catches, tags, and tracks sharks. The fact that the company is based in Park City makes all the sense in the world. Up until the recent switch, I'd say about 80% of my work was in the outdoor video world and 90% of that was in skiing. I got to live the dream from around 19 to 31... pretty happy with where it's taken me but it's time to actually make some cash now that I've jumped into the wife and a house club.
My account says I joined before September of 2001, so I'm going with that year at least. I'm 31 now.
I certainly won't be "quitting" skiing, but I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'll be turning into a weekend warrior this winter as well as bagging early morning tours etc. Pretty much I'm going to be turning into someone that you guys would make fun of as a classic TGR member.
With everyone else, old posts were dumb. Highlighted by the fact that I just checked my profile and apparently I am still registered with a newschoolers email account, the name being freestyleskir69. Yeah I crushed it back then. When did the email fizzle out anyway?

What are you doing now? I work for ON3P in Portland. I manage materials and program and operate CNC machines. I ski almost every weekend and enjoy skateboarding, horticulture, and fishing. In a lot of ways I am a 30 year old 13 year old.

How old were you when you first started on NS? 14, 29 now.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why? Never. The amount of love I have definitely ebbs and flows but I always love to ski, the past 6 months I have been more hyped than in probably 10 years. I have had some injuries and personal setbacks that have slowed me down, but skiing always comes out as the most consistent source of joy for me.

Read back some of your old post histories, what do you think of them today? Some bring memories, some I remember making, a lot are cringe worthy. Its an interesting personal history lesson though.

I'd like to add that throughout the end of my teenage years and beginning of my 20s I formed a lot of solid connections on here and was fortunate enough to meet a lot of NSers in person, creating friendships that exist today. I know that without this site I would not have known the same people, learned of the same opportunities, or become who I am today. I hardly ever post anymore but still lurk around and read and watch edits.

I couldn't ski for 3 months because of a broken femur. I cant think of a longer dry spell in the past 10 years.

Some regrets. I dont regret a single ban tho.

What are you doing now?

Finished BS and MPAc degree from Montana State in 2011 and 2012. Moved to Alaska to work for a big four accounting firm, spent 3 years there, got my CPA license, then made the jump to priviate industry as a controller for one of the largest trash compines in the country.

How old were you when you first started on NS?

I think it was summer 2002, before my sophomore year of high school.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?

Haven’t quit skiing but I am unfortunately not able to ski nearly as much as I used to. Pretty limited to weekend warrior status and vacations now. Used to ski tons of park and I have almost entirely given up park to move onto mountain and back-country/touring.

Read back some of your old post histories, what do you think of them today?

Our old Steamboat thread in Colorado regionals I still think holds the record for longest thread in regionals. It went on fairly active for almost 10 years with just a small crew of us. Pretty crazy to go back and see right where I was at a certain time. Kind of like an old journal.

How old were you when you first started on NS?
high school, probably 14 or 15 when i first came on, 16-17 when i first made an account cause i had something i wanted to post instead of just lurking.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
I don't ski park as much anymore. not getting quite as many days as i was a decade ago and definitely more half days than i used to. but im still on my skis around 100 days a year or so.

I thought i was a lot cooler than i am, haha. some good old fashioned hating. i still do hate soft skis too. there was some coherent arguments and helpful comments as well...and man, it used to be way easier to sell stuff.

I started on NS when I was 12 and im 29 now...so 17 years ago. I barely look on here anymore but I used to be obsessed. I had a name before this one as well that was member 7000 something but I got it converted to pink and started fucking with people back in the day.

What are you doing now?
I don't ski much anymore because my knees and back hurt a lot, probably from decking so hard all the time at Keystone/Breck as a kid. I mostly climb and BASE jump but still dirtbag around. I lived in a cave all summer climbing and jumping.

How old were you when you first started on NS?
I think 12.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
No, didn't quit but I don't ski much like I used to. I only ski backcountry these days but my lower back kills me when I hit any sort of jump due to the compression so it took a lot of the fun of skiing away. I mostly climb these days.

Seems like too much work but I'm sure I said some stupid shit. You don't accrue thousands of posts by saying intelligent things.

was pretty stoked my first day this season at big bear and was hitting all the rails (except the two with stairs and a super high ollie) and did a 3 over their one table. not bad for being out of shape and out of practice.

should be skiing once a week the rest of the season after the holidays.

What are you doing now?

I am married (2 years) a dad (6 months) I live in Salt Lake City. Most of my spare time is spent working on various projects related to Catholic sacred art and liturgy. I own a creative firm. None of my boring work (the shit that makes me money) is on there, but here's the website with the fun stuff on it. I'm sure you'll recognize some of the work. I still lurk and watch the ski industry. It hasn't changed in essence, the gear just looks a little different and park skiers don't afterbang the way they used to.

No, but I don't have time to ski much anymore, and I didn't budget for a pass this year, so I just tour when I do ski. I still love skiing, and still do design for ON3P.

I mostly agree with myself, but I gave some bad advice about life. Word of advice from current me - listen to people who you respect who are older than you and give it more weight than the advice of your peers, even if your peers sound smart. Experience means a LOT more than you give it credit for when you're young.

Holy shit lol!!!! My bad dude. When I moved back to NY a few years ago, the mountain I was working at made me change it. The marketing person showed them something good I posted. A thread, and article, picture, idk. But they weren't digging the name and made a big deal out of it. I didn't care so I changed it for the 7 months I worked there. I guess"theabortionator" and a coat hanger icon isn't that funny to some people.

That shit makes me laugh though! Tell your mom I found Jesus and I've changed my ways.

DrailHello. I’ve been on NS since the beginning. 2000 or whenever the hell this shit started. I was 15 I think? I’m 33 now.

I guess you could still say I’m ski bumming, although I don’t really identify myself as such these days. I work in forestry from late April to mid November and take winters off. Finally got around to buying a sled last winter and bought a house with my wife over the summer. I can sled from my front door into the hills above Nelson, BC and ski till it’s time to head back down to the house for dinner. I don’t really have blinders on to skiing anymore and really I just enjoy being out in the hills with friends, and don’t care so much about agendas/progression.

And post history? I mean, I’ve got some POV edits, done a bit of writing, and for posts... well, Cedric and I were the first to hit 1000 posts on the forums before skiing was cool, dealt with teenage angst on here, hated, loved, and a few too many late night drunken rambles than I’m proud of.


Also historical fact -

Drail was the one who introduced me to Newschoolers. I remember chatting with him in the lift line of Badlands about something stupid that happened in the Freeze forums, and he said something like "Dude, forget that place. You need to check out Newschoolers... its the shit."

That moment Changed my life substantially... so thanks Daryl. I owe ya. :)

These days i'm old balls in NS years. I'm graduated from college and I work as a substitute school teacher. Still skiing, and besides that I spend a lot of time ski touring, climbing, mountaineering and going on trips that combine all those things. Still ski park as well.

I did stop downhill skiing as much the last few seasons but I got a pass for the first time in 3 years this season. as mentioned above, other activities have definitely grabbed my attention and have been competing for my time. There's a lot of fun as shit to do in the mountains it turns out but I still love to ski and am just as stoked ass ever this season to get tons of days in.

I own a beer company in Toronto. I really miss the more active, outdoors based lifestyle I had when I lived out west. We'll see how much longer I can stay in the city.

I think I was 14 or 15. It was in the fall of 2000 I think. I'm 33 now.

No, not exactly. I wish I skiing was a bigger part of my life right now though. I was obsessed with skiing through Highschool and university. When I finished university I got a job as an oil analyst on the stock market in Toronto. In the fall of 2007, both IDEA and the Canadian oil sector dropped. I was working 80+ hour weeks, had no job security, and was stressed out beyond belief. I quit and sold any investments. I spent the following winter in Laax, Switzerland. It was pretty amazing, I spent the next years skiing all winter and cooking on ships at sea all summer. I spent seasons in Banff, Whistler, and Nelson. I moved back to Toronto to do a masters and actually hurt my back at the gym. Huge bummer. I haven't quit skiing but it is just too expensive to keep up in the city. The cost of living has risen dramatically and I can't justify $80 lift tickets and the long drive/gas money just to ski at Blue or MSLM. I'm fortunate to do a bunch of high-level AFP judging so I'm still very plugged into the community and sport. Last year though, I think I only skied 3 or 4 days in Colorado during a competition. I really miss having skiing as a huge part of my life and am going to fix that.

It seems like I was talking about skiing, selling my old shit, and sometimes going on drunken rants. I really miss talking to some of the clowns on here from back in the day.

Sitting on the couch writing a response to an NS.com thread on Christmas Day - probably the same thing I was doing in front of a desktop computer in 2002 and 22 years old. Had the wife, but not three kids.
Back then, I was a Navy journalist (writer/photographer) stationed in Nevada near Reno/Tahoe. Stumbled upon NS during my boring work days. Thanks to Harvey and later Mr. Bishop, I carried my work out of the Navy and into writing for this bunch of kooks and full time into the ski industry (something I hem and haw on picking up again for fun).
By 2011, I needed a real job again.
I've been back in the Navy as a public affairs officer for the past eight years - and not broke, which is nice. The work is truly amazing. Frustrating, but amazing. Two weeks ago, I returned from a six-month tour in Afghanistan doing press operations for NATO. Four days on snow already. I'm basically crushing it ;)

Absolutely not! Bagged 50 days last year. Got back in shape in Afghanistan and (as someone posted above) been working to land my first backflip at the ripe age of 38 - which I turn tomorrow! Still stay in touch with lots of industry peeps. Still miss it most days.

- I'm a prosthetist/orthotist and researcher at the University of Washington (I make prosthetic legs and look for ways to improve the way they are made).

How old were you when you first started on NS?
- I was 21 and skiing a lot in college when I joined (now I'm 34)

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
- Never! But now I have 4 kids (married at 24, and started having kids right off the bat). My kids are 10, 7,6, and 3, and now the three yea old cruises all over the mountain. I still cruise through the park and stick to my solid tricks (left cork 5s and 7s, backflips, 270s on and off rails). I usually get about 15-20 days in per season.

- I used to post a lot of cartoons on NS that people generally liked, and most of them I am still good with, but a few are not too funny. I love NS, even with all of the changes over the years to the site and the sport. It's my equivalent of checking on NFL/NBA stats for the rest of adults. I would rather stay up to date on our small niche within skiing, than chat with coworkers about injured football players. My kids watch a lot of videos with me.

I'm chilling with a broken wrist, 1.5 months in. Filming the homies/going through footage from the season, keeping the fire going in the wood stove, and applying for artist residencies/shows.
Started on NS at 15. Made an account shortly after I started skiing.
I haven't ever considered quitting skiing, only gotten deeper into it.
Wow, I didn't think I'd made that many threads over the years. Didn't need to make any of them.

I no longer sleep in my car to ski, but my weekends aren't a 100% commitment to going skiing anymore.

After ski bumming at Squaw for a few seasons I came back to the east coast where i work in research

About 12 years old... it was in 1999 i believe

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?

No. i hope to not stop entirely until i'm so old that i have to. ideally i'm still sending flips first hit when i'm a dad

HAHA i private messaged Mike Nick on here when i was 12 to ask him if the prices on Line's site were for 1 ski or 2. to his credit he replied quickly and assured me that the skis were indeed sold in pairs lol

i try to be a helpful poster nowadays cause shit, i've been on the site off and on for 20 years now...might as well try to make use of the knowledge.

and skiing has given me so much, i like to help people out the way i was helped out as i developed as a skier. helping a newbie figure stuff out or hyping little kids out on the mtn is the best.

skiing is just a beautiful amazing sport and it's been a real pleasure to watch and take part as it's developed over the years. i hope to keep up on the scene for a long time and to keep doing my part to help people access the sport and get infected with the hype

What are you doing now?
At the moment I'm packing up pets and anything that can't be replaced in case we have to evacuate. The Thomas Fire in Southern California has reached my town and the evac zone has been moving towards us all day.
In general, I went to med school and got married in DC, now living and practicing in Santa Barbara. I don't like my job and I just got the guts to quit, even though I don't have a new job or destination in mind yet. I am also questioning my marriage and dealing with the depression that comes along with that. Life is hard these days and change is scary.

How old were you when you first started on NS?
I was 23 and teaching English in Japan. I didn't like my job and I was living in an isolated rural area. I started skiing so that I would look forward to the next snow instead of dreading it. This is when I was able to ski the most, I lived near the mountains and went every weekend. At the end of the day I would hit the Ramen shop for dinner and then the onsen to warm up. I didn't appreciate what I had.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
There was a lull for a while, I was a student and then a resident and I was only able to ski 2-5 days per year for a while. My wife stopped skiing completely and my friends kept flaking so I often went alone. I got bitter about it and felt like skiing was just a source of stress instead of fun. It just wasn't fun anymore, and I thought about cashing in my gear and moving on. A couple years ago when we moved to Cali I started going to Mammoth. Snow was good a bunch of friends followed through and joined me for trips, and I rediscovered what a positive force skiing could be in my life. This year planning trips and looking forward to the winter has been a coping technique to stay positive and help me deal with the uncertainty in my life. It gives me hope for the future: Even though everything feels shitty this week, I remember how I feel when I'm skiing, and I know I will feel that way again.

Started lurking in 2002-ish (20 yrs old) and officially joined in 2006. My level of involvement has ebbed and flowed over the years. Trying to keep as much positive as possible with the occasional n00b jab

jesus, there is some fossils in here.

i joined in 2002, i think i was 16 or 17, probably grade 11, just bought a pair of 1080s.
still ski as often as possible. less ski days but more ski trips.
i didnt post too often. was more of a reader than producer of material. this is probably my first post in like 7-8 years.
great to hear from some of you old fucks posting in here though. alot of you guys cracked me up in the forums every single day.
