What are you doing now?

Right now I am watching the Seahawks game. But in general I have a full time job doing storm water management, been married 5 years, have a baby on the way next summer.

How old were you when you first started on NS?

Junior in highschool, I think. I just turned 33 for reference.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?

No way man. I don't get 50 days a year in anymore, but if I really pushed it I probably could. I don't ski park much anymore, but I want to get back into it this year.

Read back some of your old post histories, what do you think of them today?

Cringe worthy at times. I didn't make a lot of threads though, thank God.

Just graduated college, I've been working coaching freestyle in Park City for the past few years. Probably gonna do that for a while.

How old were you when you first started on NS?
Made my account when I was 13, but I think i lurked a little bit before that.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
No way, still get ~100 days a year. As I said, I'm coaching too, so I get on skis almost every day during the winter.

Read back some of your old post histories, what do you think of them today?
Pretty bad. Some of them are pretty funny, but most of the time it's just a reminder of how dumb teenagers (me) are.

I'm older than all your moms. I invented the screamin semen and now I'm 32. I logged back in the other day for the first time in like 11 years to talk shit about all you little shits skiing with no poles. It looks worse than Rosie O'Donnell in a bikini so fuck off.
I ski 150 days a year and these days maybe only 10 of those are in the park. My knees are beat from years of ski ing all day and working nights in the hotel business bench pressing Texans luggage and making hot moms mojitos at the pool. Your mom showed me her tits and they're great now go steal some rental poles like I do so you don't look like a fucking kook. Seriously tho

I wouldn't say I'm still active but I check back in once and a while.

Reflecting on Newschoolers is deep for me because I was really active from my early teens and through college, so the threads reflect how I felt at the time. Reading back on some I realize how different I used to be. I joined Newschoolers back in 2003 when I used to love skiing. Reading my old threads I used to be really hopeful and fun and realize I've changed but not for the better. After years of drug and alcohol abuse I'm much more jaded and negative than I used to be. I went through tough times but now make a 6 figure salary, have everything I want but am the most depressed I've been.

Reading through old threads on here is like watching Adventure Time, I used to have a lot of fun and my curiosity drove a lot of intelligent statements.

Good news, I bought new Armada ARVs, Rossi FKS 140s, Dalbello ill moro boots, new poles, new everything... and will be skiing Mt Hood Meadows all year. Hopefully skiing will bring me back and save my life.

Next month ,I will have had this account for 12 years, which puts me at 14 when I started my account.
I still consider myself rather active; a majority of my post count was generated during that Golden age of the 2010-2012 forums.Not so much active in the forums anymore. I watch a lot of edits posted on this site, as well as enjoy the news article, gear reviews, and event coverage.
It's crazy to see how far the site has come, and how much its helped push ski culture,

I'm coming into 27 this winter, and its impossible to keep up with the kids these days, but I'm still out there, living a half life in Lake Louise as a ski bum/AV Technician, racked up over 100 days last winter. This February, I'm headed to South Korea to work aerials, moguls, and halfpipe. Which I'm more than excited to see, and I hope to see many friends of NS while I"m there (???)\

So to all you 10plusers,we aren't as old as they think we are.

Time to get 100% real

What are you doing now?
At the moment I'm packing up pets and anything that can't be replaced in case we have to evacuate. The Thomas Fire in Southern California has reached my town and the evac zone has been moving towards us all day.
In general, I went to med school and got married in DC, now living and practicing in Santa Barbara. I don't like my job and I just got the guts to quit, even though I don't have a new job or destination in mind yet. I am also questioning my marriage and dealing with the depression that comes along with that. Life is hard these days and change is scary.

How old were you when you first started on NS?
I was 23 and teaching English in Japan. I didn't like my job and I was living in an isolated rural area. I started skiing so that I would look forward to the next snow instead of dreading it. This is when I was able to ski the most, I lived near the mountains and went every weekend. At the end of the day I would hit the Ramen shop for dinner and then the onsen to warm up. I didn't appreciate what I had.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
There was a lull for a while, I was a student and then a resident and I was only able to ski 2-5 days per year for a while. My wife stopped skiing completely and my friends kept flaking so I often went alone. I got bitter about it and felt like skiing was just a source of stress instead of fun. It just wasn't fun anymore, and I thought about cashing in my gear and moving on. A couple years ago when we moved to Cali I started going to Mammoth. Snow was good a bunch of friends followed through and joined me for trips, and I rediscovered what a positive force skiing could be in my life. This year planning trips and looking forward to the winter has been a coping technique to stay positive and help me deal with the uncertainty in my life. It gives me hope for the future: Even though everything feels shitty this week, I remember how I feel when I'm skiing, and I know I will feel that way again.

Living in Seoul, South Korea as a university student and I make documentaries about e-sports/StarCraft.

13. I'm 28 now.

Nope. I have a season's pass in South Korea and am an official weekend warrior.

I was definitely immature at times (a lot haha). I used to constantly make fun of current skiing trends because me and my friends just didn't get much inspiration from the sport. We could have definitely been a lot more mature about it, but that's what happens when you go through adolescence right? I come back to the site every once in a while to see if there are any other skiers in Korea. Pretty much everyone I know doesn't use this site anymore though.

18. I didn't start when I was 10 like half the people. Didn't even want to make an account because I thought it was stupid. Friend made me an account to post park updates and now I'm the only one of that group that ever comes on this place.

I guess so. I still snowboard a decent amount. But I think I've officially given up skiing.

I don't even remember half the shit I posted but I'm sure it boarders between pretty funny, and the dumbest shit ever posted on the internet.

What are you doing now?

It's 4:40 am. Listening to snow plows. Getting ready to go to my work shop. But slacking/putting things off because I'm on NS. You know how it goes.

How old were you when you first started on NS?
I think I was lurking on NS my senior year in HS, but I started getting really active when I started college in the fall of '05. My dorm mate, who I didn't know before college, was also on NS. We were weird and 18 and Facebook was just getting started so we'd proxy talk shit on here from the same room about ski stuff. It was awesome.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
I'm in a bit of a hiatus. I got in a super bad car accident a little over a year ago and healing takes time. I broke my pelvis in a couple spots and my lower spine so I have a feeling drops to flat, knuckling jumps, and zipper lines through moguls aren't ever gonna be there again. I got more runs than average before my car accident, and soft snow is basically pool therapy though, so we're good.

Oh man. It's funny because I feel like I've come full circle on so many things. I went from asking where to mount my t-halls to being an editor at SKIING magazine while it was still around, then working at TGR and BOMB SNOW. The funny thing is the same problems exist in NS that I was calling out in 05.

I think I love skiing more than ever now in a way that it lets people come together and decide their own reality. Everything in skiing, from "slow ski zone" signs to urban hand rails, is just the product of someone's imagination. If we get out of our own heads enough to figure out how to have fun from every perspective, the world will be a better place. Skiing teaches that, it's just a shame it's not available to more people.

I'm a plain jane, but I just checked and my account just turned 10! Crazy to think because I'm only 22. Must've been 12 when I joined this site. I don't think of myself as some wise old skier, or some NS innovator because when I joined there were already a ridiculous amount of members and the forums were probably just as active as they are today. I'm about to graduate from UNC and still love skiing as much as ever, although going to school in NC has turned me from a 80+ day a year skier to a 30 day a year skier. Tore my ACL two years ago. That fucked me up and I have been digressing in skill since. Still work at my ski shop when I go home on breaks. Trying to figure out what to do with my life. Considering moving to Bend, OR and bumming it with some homies I met on Duke's ski team while I build my resume/clout up. Regardless I want to live in a ski area and that takes priority over the high paying job. I was probably most active on here 2009-2011, where I would spend every waking moment absorbing skiing and ski culture.

Couple stories-
-Back then, the regionals forum Wales was a memey shitshow where everyone would spam bullshit and learn how to use html, lol. I think they deleted it at the time, but I guess it's back up now.
-Cults were pretty big (not sure if they are still around or still get used.) Build-a-jib was the place to be in the summer.
-We organized in the donators forum a way to bomb some super active members who never donated and get them to donate. I think we got K-Rob to donate if I remember right.
-The regional forums were incredibly informative and kept you up on the latest happenings locally. There were at least a couple posts everyday. The Ohio/Michigan/Indiana forum is how I got a hookup from my ski shop and how I got connected to a lot of different ski crews that were relatively local.
-BST was a shit show. There used to be feeler threads all the time which is how kids flexed about how much OG Jiberish they had in their closet.

One thing that's tight about being a little older is that a lot of kids I grew up skiing with or around are out there killing it now. A lot of the Hood Crew is from the midwest, and I skied with a bunch of those guys growing up. I went to Windells in 2010 and a ton of the kids I met out there are pro or almost pro now.

Thoughts on skiing now-
It's fucking tight. It'll always make me happy to an old JOSS edit or edit of Brogan or OG Wallisch/4bi9, but I really fuck with the subgenres of freestyle skiing that have developed. Back when I was most involved in skiing, it seemed everyone kinda had a relatively homogenous opinion. Everyone liked Wally, the G Suit, gopro edits and tried to afterbang. If not they liked Line and the Traveling Circus. Now you have so many different crews pushing boundaries in so many different ways.

Favorite parts about skiing now-
-ON3P (not as a brand because I know they have been around but as a fucking culture. Skis, style of skiing, art, attitude towards skiing and presence in mainstream skiing.)
-SLVSH
-Alex Hall
-100mm underfoot park skis
-Soundcloud Rap/wavvy shit in edits. I feel like I'm aging out of trends, but these ones are fun to get into.

What am I doing now? Currently working as a structural engineer. Sitting at my desk, about to mop up some chicken and rice and watch some ski edits.

How old was I when I first started on NS? I joined back in 2006 as iski1080, so I was either 15 or 16.

Did i quit skiing? NEVER!!! Actually I quit my first career job, cashed in my 401k, and ski bummed for 3 years. Just got back into career mode again this past summer. If I make it, this will be my 4th consecutive season with 100+ days.

Old posts; I haven't been able to log into my old account for a while now, but I'm sure every post goes something like this, "T-Hall is a boss!!!", "Simon Dumont is an actual dwarf", "RIP CR", "just picked up some new chronics, gonna sticker them up." How do i feel about that shit nowadays? Firm believer all of this still holds true!

I'm a social worker, working with kids with major behavioural issues (violence, sexualized behaviour, etc) that stem from traumatic history (abuse, neglect, domestic violence, etc). For the most part, I work with little dudes between 6-12, but also get to work with their families. It can be super heavy at times, but can also be incredibly rewarding. I moved from the flatlands (Saskatchewan) out to Calgary, which has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Love this place and love looking out and seeing the mountains every day.

I'm 32 and joined back in 2002, so I was about 17? I think I lurked for a couple years before actually joining though.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
I haven't quit skiing, but have probably skied less since moving to Alberta than back when I was in Saskatchewan. The hills were small back there, but the parks were decent and lift tickets were dirt cheap. Now, I live in a city that's fairly expensive on a social worker salary (not something to write home about), have am more into a few other expensive hobbies (road/mountain biking, photography). I still love skiing, but it's getting harder and harder to fit the budget. Maybe I'll pick up a touring set-up at some point and that will help me get out more. I'm also thinking of picking up some used GS skis so I can go blast some high speed turns.

What are you doing now? I'm in Southern California moonlighting as a realtor (I've had so many jobs and businesses, pretty unemployable and despite repeated 'wisdom' from well meaning people, can't seem to gain any sustainable interest in anything other than shredding.) Raising 2 little girls with my wife and surfing everyday.

How old were you when you first started on NS? 17 --> 31 now.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why? I mind ski pretty much every hour, haven't actually ski'd in 2 years but surf everyday, still very committed to the shred. Pretty committed to the ocean at this point but definitely looking to arrange a situation where several months can be spent on the pow hunt each year.

Read back some of your old post histories, what do you think of them today? I was just young, but much of my stance/disposition hasn't changed much. Overall I am much more likely to appreciate more of what people are doing in skiing regardless of status or level or crew.

And skiing overall? It's just so cool. I'm most excited on how good equipment has gotten.. I am so stoked on seeing the first gen snowboarders and skiers still finding a place in the sport.. guys like iguchi and the forum 8.. t.hall etc etc. I fully thought that skiing would be over by the end of my 20's but it's probably even more compelling to me now than ever.

Sitting in a trailer at the base of Breckenridge watching interview footage of James Woods. I'm post production supervising Dew Tour, and we're getting into full swing. Long, fun hours!

How old were you when you first started on NS?
17 when I first made an account. Probably a year younger when I first stumbled across the site. There wasn't much online skiing content back then, and most of what did exist was racing and recreational oriented, with a little bit of old school backcountry peppered in.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
No way. I got 60 days in last season, a few more this summer, little bit at Baker earlier this season, and half the day today. I'll probably knock out a few more hours tomorrow. Skiing isn't going anywhere, ever.

Meh, most teens aren't known for their comprehensive arsenal of wisdom and foresight. No point in thinking too much about what anyone said a decade ago, especially about silly skiing discussion. Good times for sure.

i'm 28 years old and studying for my entrance exam to get a master's degree.


How old were you when you first started on NS?
I was 16 when i signed up for NS. I was a sophomore in high school and signed up during my study hall. I had previously found NS the summer before when i googled "how to grind a rail on skis". i had just bought salomon 1080 spaceframes and i wanted to learn how to grind rails lol. i was a racer at the time and saw some kid hit a rail and then throw a 540 off a jump and land backwards. it was the coolest ever and i wanted to learn how to do that.


Did you quit skiing? If so, why?
I haven't quit skiing, but my focus has shifted in life. when i was in high school i was skiing about 40 days a season. when i was in college i was skiing about 60 days a season. i always wanted to live in the mountains and pretty much survived solely on that thought through high school and college... constantly imagining my dream. after i graduated from college i moved to lake tahoe and worked at a resort for four years and was getting about 80 days in a season. now i'm back in the midwest, don't own a pair of park skis, and this winter is my first winter in 13 years that i don't have a season pass. i'm at a point in my life where i can't afford to get hurt skiing. i need to progress in a career, pay all my bills, and focus on a master's degree. skiing has my heart, always will, but i can't dedicate my life to it anymore. i guess i could dedicate my life to it as i am the controller of my destiny, but sadly priorities change and i am happy with the direction i am going. i never thought i'd say that skiing isn't the center of my life, but.... i guess that's the path i've gone.

some of them are funny, some of the are super cringe-worthy... sometimes i was an asshole just because. i used to think i knew a lot. now i know i don't know shit.

hi, 2005 checking in.

I am 26 years old and currently trying to figure out international shipping for Vishnu as well as sending emails about boring shit that will turn into cool shit eventually.

I was a lonely and bored 14 year old in Wisconsin

Skiing is still the only thing I care about. I now film skiing for my job (in essence) and ride at Brighton at least three times a week, depending on knee pain haha *cries*

I was an idiot, still am pretty much the same level of idiot. At least I'm consistent?

Nope, but I don't ski everyday like I used to. I'm more of a weekend warrior with a couple trips each year to Utah. I live in the city and if I couldn't escape every weekend I couldn't handle the city living.

I hope atleast a few of my posts have helped people. Whether it's their decisions on where to go to college, or what skis to buy.

I started on NS in 2003 and I was 24 at the time.
I definetly did not quit skiing but i ski less but like to think I ski better. Honestly I still charge pretty hard and would like to think I am still progressing. My goal is to do a backflip this year before I turn 40.
I have recently read back some old threads and have to admit they are cringe worthy like someone else noted.

I feel like NS has become a really cool place to have of read awesome intelligent discussions about my biggest passion SKIING. I feel like the mass audience has grown and there is less people bullying ( for lack of a better word) than has been back in the day. I know how to get around this site to get the content that I crave. Great post by the way OP

My account is gonna be ten soon, I joined in 2008 but I was browsing before that, I think at least from 2007. And I was grinding boxes and doing 360s on rental skis and skiboards before that; and being that one kid on highschool ski trips that could actually ski and wasn't trying snowboarding.

Obviously I'm posting in this thread right now, and listening to Moonface because Spencer Krug is a piano god... But tomorrow morning I'm going to my full time job as a R&D chemist.

I think I was like 14 or 15 when I found NS, but I didn't make an account until I decided to buy my first pair of park skis. Before that I had skiboards and was hitting boxes on those. Not even sure how I found NS. I'm 25 now.

Didn't quit skiing. I ski less because life and stuff, but I'll never quit. I did go surf last weekend since that snowstorm brought some good waves, rather than going skiing on 2 trails with 2 rails, maybe a jump for ants and 50000 gaper snowboarders. Yay east coast. But I can't wait for the first day on snow.

I don't think I ever posted anything too stupid. My first thread was probably me asking about line chronics, where to mount them and stuff like that. Long live 85mm waist park skis. I have like 5000 something post over almost ten years so that's really not a lot compared to some people on here. I mean people get that many in like a year right? There's some threads I don't remember making about things I probably could have figured out on my own but, nothing catastrophic.

I was definitely immature at times (a lot haha). I used to constantly make fun of current skiing trends because me and my friends just didn't get much inspiration from the sport. We could have definitely been a lot more mature about it, but that's what happens when you go through adolescence right? I come back to the site every once in a while to see if there are any other skiers in Korea. Pretty much everyone I know doesn't use this site anymore though.

Still living in a ski town doing carpentry and heavily involved in the community. Still getting after it but the body dictates what happens more now than ever. Judging freeride comps, bought my first carving skis ever.

Hell no, but took my first year off ever to go over seas last year. A bad back made me not so stoked but you sometimes got to step back and refresh.

What are you doing now?
Getting my masters in landscape architecture in Toronto, finishing up my thesis year in the spring. Winters out east are tough but I'll be back west soon enough. Brewing lots of beer and might start up a brewery when the opportunity presents itself.

15. Lurked for a year or so before but was too scared to join until I'd learned how to spin a 360.

Not really, but I've had more than a couple 5-10 day seasons in the past few years. They're some of the most enjoyable days of my winter but I just have so many other things that I also want to do. Guess I'm a bit better at balance these days.

Such a can of worms to open. All the angst, college undergrad overconfidence, general insecurities trying to look cool are all publicly readable. Hopefully there were some thoughtful bits and pieces but thanks to everyone for putting up with me!

I grew up as a pa park kid, and park skiing has been in my blood since. But fuckin a does knuckling a 70 foot jump hurt for a couple more days at 28 than it did when i was 16. I have gotten a lot more into backcountry. I like going hiking with my dog and skiing more than a spring park day drinking with the transient 18-23 year olds who come and go ever year.

2006 was the first year I got twin tips and eventually found out about and joined NS. Then in the summer of 2007 I met Scrappy Joe after commenting on a skate video he uploaded here. In 2008, I bought a Canon GL2 from Kohl Schoeing and from then on I was hooked.

Any active members who were here 10 years ago probably remember New Intelligent Group. That was a big inspiration for filming and making videos along with the stuff Landis Tanaka was creating. A nostalgic memory from that era was the Tramdock promotions at the beginning of edits.

Since 2006, I've created hundreds of videos and a couple longer movie projects. Having a free range of music selection has always been one of the most fun parts of editing. This is something I am still passionate about and find the most exciting about continuing to produce media. Creating soundtracks that feel like being at a concert.

Some of my old posts are good, some definitely aren't. The thing I don't respect the most out of my old posts are the ones that are whiny and arrogant. For example:

I understand the message I was trying to communicate there but think it was presented a bit poorly. Skiing in the city is something I really value due to convenience. If there's snow outside and you own a pair of skis, go out and enjoy it. This doesn't have to mean hitting urban and crazy handrails but skiing is much more accessible when you can ride the hills around your neighborhood than having to dedicate a whole day to commuting to a ski resort.

My visions now are the same as they were when I first started uploading videos here. To go ski on fresh snow, listen to good music, and have fun with friends. The lifestyle can be really simple and it think it's valuable to strive to keep it that way as you continue to get older.

Did you quit skiing? If so, why? Nope, still love to ski and hit the park. I have a 7 month old boy now though so haven't been able to get out much yet this year

I joined in 2002 as a 20-year-old park skier and former mogul competitor still living in New Hampshire.
Now I live in Denver after spending a long time in Jackson Wyoming ski buming. My career is now on fast track as I'm set to become a regional sales manager for residential solar energy company. In the past I've had liftie, restaurant, painting, business development manager of a Scottish wind energy company, volunteer, and hotel jobs before I tried to pull off a move that a dog sniffed out and set me back a little. I married a bad ass that country skier snowboarder check and still got free skis. I stay true to my passions and love skiing, the environment, and freedom.

I was 15 when I joined 32 now.

Haven't stopped skiing and never will.

Old post are mostly about skis and powder. Those two things are still always on my mind today.

Hello. I’ve been on NS since the beginning. 2000 or whenever the hell this shit started. I was 15 I think? I’m 33 now.

I guess you could still say I’m ski bumming, although I don’t really identify myself as such these days. I work in forestry from late April to mid November and take winters off. Finally got around to buying a sled last winter and bought a house with my wife over the summer. I can sled from my front door into the hills above Nelson, BC and ski till it’s time to head back down to the house for dinner. I don’t really have blinders on to skiing anymore and really I just enjoy being out in the hills with friends, and don’t care so much about agendas/progression.

And post history? I mean, I’ve got some POV edits, done a bit of writing, and for posts... well, Cedric and I were the first to hit 1000 posts on the forums before skiing was cool, dealt with teenage angst on here, hated, loved, and a few too many late night drunken rambles than I’m proud of.

My account is coming up on 11 years now. Wow it's been a long ride. I'm old enough to be some of you guys dad , I'll be 36 in a couple months.
Life has come full circle since I first browsed NS. Started as a bored single guy who loved skiing, got married, moved out west had two kids, got divorced, moved back home with my two kids. Now it's just us 3 and I am teaching my 4 year old how to ride and next year they will both be on skis.
I still love to ski, I am a ski instructor in my spare time in the winter and am teaching my kids as I mentioned. I have gone back to school for a different major, I am in social work now rather than computer engineering.
I went through long spells of inactivity but I always check in here and there especially during comp season at least for the news feeds.
My most memorable thread was the three word story thread I started that grew to like a hundred pages long.
Many great memories here but also some very good memories from that time in my life riding with my family and friends. Made many good memories and connections through skiing I will always remember. I even wrote a paper on the skiing community for a higher level English class I took last term. Love all you guys. Keep shredding

For work...still with the same company but have gone tgrough a few different jobs. Currently and for the foreseeable future, I am a tech install fibre and home security for the phone company. I honestly love my job. Half my day is spent driving around with the tunes cranked.

I quit for a few years. A lot of it was because the winters were so shitty here...still are for the most part. I decided tobget back at it a couple years ago. Bought new gear last year. It has been nice even though I only get out a couple times a season. My friends all stopped so I really have no one to go with anymore so it is harder to get motivated to go bomb around for a day.

I am too lazy to look back but I feel I am still much the same kind of person now so I suspect they are simlar.

I am currently chilling on vacation with my wife and kids. Just had a daughter Novermber 6th, so now I have 2 daughters and a wife. It's a whole lot of female in my house

Shit I remember making a name when NS just started, but didn't get real active till I bought my first twins. The OG original Rossi scratch. The red and volt ones with the nude chick. Funny story, actually thought the yellow was actually Shrek for the longest till I saw the bases

Im currently enjoying ski season and being laid off from my summer job on a hotshot crew. A path I highly recommend to someone trying to live the ski bum lifestyle while also having money to buy the IPA 12 pack as opposed to another 36er of keystone.
