Snow conditions - Utah

Heading to Utah next week and as of right now I am very concerned about snow... Anyone currently in the area have insight as to what this season will look like? Any recommendations for where to buy my pass based on snowfall?

The snow is bad. We want more. We hope some is coming soon. Doesn't matter where you go now. No one has much snow. All the SLC area resorts are close to each other so usually get hit by the same storms. Historically Alta gets a little more snow than the other spots, but certain storms hit Brighton/Solitude harder. PC is mostly low elevation so it suffers even more in low snow years.

You have to have snow to have snow conditions...

All resorts are man made only.

High pressure in full control till x-mas.

I've skied Brighton, Solitude, Park city and Canyons all within the last week and Brighton is doing the best of those 4, with Canyons doing the worst. You can sort of ski off the groomers if you don't mind the occasional rock strike at Brighton. Everywhere else you are stuck on piste with no options. I don't know how Snowbird or Alta are doing. There is no snow in the forecast so I don't think it's going to get better anytime soon unfortunately. I picked a great year to move to Utah.

slow start last year as well, looked very bleak up until the last half of december, and then we just got pounded all throughout january and then onward. Who knows, maybe its a skunk year or maybe it turns at some point.

I saw an interesting infopgraphic thingy on the news last night that shared similar patterns to what we have right now for a season in like '76-77. Didn't snow a whole lot up until march and they got like over 40" of liquid that month. Not to mention Utah usually sees way more snow the 2nd half of the season into the spring and so forth.

Stay high and ski snowbird/alta. A bit more snow, not epic conditions but better than the PC side. Deer Valley surprisingly has more skiing open than both the canyons and PCMR combined so that's cool if you can afford a ticket there. Other than that, not much to say besides anticipate hauling ass down groomers and bringing some rock skis if you wanna risk it and ski some fun stuff.

Feels weird saying this kind of stuff as we approach mid December in Utah but its the way it is and last year turned out to be one of the best in a long while. Later starts always turn out nice, tram laps in june would be nice again.

Unfortunately not much out here right now. It has been pretty cold this last week though. Started to heat up these last two days which worries me but in my five months living here I've already learned how fast the weather changes here so anything can happen really. If you're a park guy PC just built two kickers and they've got some fun rails set up right now but snowfall wise not great. Big mountain is a non option at the moment unless you wanna tour but it hasn't snowed for a little over a week and a half so even that isn't great. Brighton I've heard from a couple of guys has been pretty fun but honestly man it's just sort of a "pick your poison" type situation right now. Skiing is skiing though I can honestly have a good time regardless.

I mean Alta got 18" last Sunday into Monday and I skied there this past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and being an east coast kid and then hitting up Alta it was sick!!!! Found plenty of powder stashes and threw backies in the toilet bowl, but on Sunday it was mad tracked out. Didn't really rape my bases on the chocolate chips so that's good, but the rocks are still evident.My buddy got plenty core shots. You can still ski off-piste though, you're just not going to be experiencing that steep n deep. Hoping after Christmas break we'll have some snow.

2014 was a pretty brutal year with plenty of multi-week stretches of high pressure and hardpack and we still had a fucking ball so yeah, that last part of your post hit the nail on the head lol. most people out here that are still trying to have fun are probably transplants from elsewhere lol. still better than Michigan skiing by a long while.

People gotta start realizing that most of the snow received in any location usually come mid January to March, even into April/may depending on the location.

All these big resorts try so hard to be open early as possible whether that's Halloween or thanksgiving, just let skiing come when it comes, and when it does, go full speed until there is nothing left to ski.

Alright I need advice.... we’re finally getting some snow but not a lot. the other day we skied deer valley and it wasn’t awful but I wouldn’t classify it as “a great ski day”... this is where the advice comes in, where should we go tomorrow and in the near future? Does anyone have any reasonable predictions for the conditions and where the best skiing may be?

The four resorts in the two cottonwood canyons (Brighton / Solitude) (Alta / Snowbird) almost always get more snow than the three resorts (two now) in Park City. I wouldn’t waste my time there. Check opensnow.com for the Utah forecast. Apparently souther utah is getting crushed by today’s storm. If you can swing the two hour drive go there.

Lower end of forecast totals from storm. Think I had 4-5" at 7,200' in park city area. Another shot of similar Saturday. Could be enough to get some skinny coverage here and there. I'm sure Vail Canyons City will push to open what they can on 10" of fluff.

Honestly if you or your family can afford it, stay at deer valley unless you need to hit up the park. Yesterday night even at Brighton you could feel ice under everything, maybe it will be ok after Saturday’s storm but it’s still wrod conditions with plenty of hidden rocks under the small layer of fresh if you go in the trees.

We got about 6" on top of 6" thats on top of nothing, so its still quite thin, but getting better. TBH you're probably going to be disappointed wherever you go.

Damn, reading these responses is a bummer. I hear that Colorado is also having a very underwhelming season so far... Dew Tour course looked like it was all man made snow.

Took your advice, skied Alta yesterday with my brother and it was unreal... one of the best ski days I’ve had in a long time. So for anyone heading to Utah or in the area I’d second this suggestion and say go to Alta for sure

Most of Alta is open as of this past Saturday. Devil’s is still closed but that’s not out of the ordinary for this time of year. I skied Alta today and it was a stark contrast, for the better, from last week. These last two storms really helped.
