"beginner lessons" shouldnt exist and is why most new people leave skiing. they teach you stuff that youll have to stop using if you even wanna go to a green trail or smth. theyre also painfully long and boring. new skiers are better off learning from a friend or even off youtube.

will die on the hill that nevermind is the best ski film. Nothing in skiing quite has the patina or melancholic mood. I’d say it’s on par with How dark Blue feels. Mad ups to @sonyhandycam and bryden for using real super 8.

So hockey stop first? I usually have a pretty hard time teaching that, even when people have been skiing for a while. I definitely agree that teaching pizza turns and then leaving is not good. The issue is that we only have 1hr and if people can't stop, turn, and get on the lift by the end of it they're gonna be pissed off at us, and pizza wedge is the tried-and-true way to get people skiing independently as quickly as possible.
I am definitely open to new ideas though. It's pretty obvious that people at my hill are teaching one way because that's the way they've always done it.

They have their place. When I instructed I always asked why people were out skiing and trying something new. If they were just out for a day to try something new, I gave the tools to play around for the day so I focused more on the wedge and such just so they could comfortably play e around on the greens and get their day of fun. If they sounded like they wanted to pursue skiing beyond that I would try to push past the wedge and jump into Christy 1s and 2s quicker to avoid avoid it becoming a barrier.
Nah. The amount of beginners I got up and rolling comfortably in an hour completely disputes this. I actually tell most people now to get a beginner lesson if not for just learning basic fundamentals. Plus it is so easy to transition from a wedge to a hockey stop once you have people doing wedge Christy’s. You literally just have them make a bigger, abrupter J shaped turn and they stop. Most naturally will start pulling their inside leg in too. You tell them “follow me” and ski backwards and most will do it.
Obviously you’ve never been in a situation where someone can’t stop on terrain that is too much for their ability. THAT stops people from continuing skiing.

oh ive never tried the follow me thing, ill see if it works. i've seen 3 people so far have to relearn skiing because of the wedge, but maybe its just a skill issue.

A few of them made a single top sheet that I kinda like that bumps them down to only 99% shitty top sheet art. Shout out Thanos Dog.
There's only a solid 3-4 ski brands rn that either make a ski I can't find from another company with a better top sheet or they just make good top sheets.
Also completely unrelated to this; I would've won the ON3P top sheet contest if it wasnt completely rigged and if the people who run ON3P weren't Portland Pussys. On the bright side though, I don't have to worry about selling a pair of ON3Ps anytime soon.

wedge is way easier for kids to learn in a short period than a hockey stop (don't know how it is for adults but would assume it's similar). it's just a short intermediary step between pizza and slide-turns. beginners aren't going to be able to learn any other type of turns in a short period of time, and i don't know why you think it creates a barrier.

kind of in the same boat. I've been injured for 18 months now and I'm finding it's impossible for me to get excited about skiing until I can actually ski injury free again

Yeah the recruitment and the masquerade are two of my fave movies ever, I can see why people wouldn't like them but at least they're different, and the skiing is obviously insane
