ColingarnesLol gotta love NS where you would get down-voted for a post like this. Fucking tooooools.
iggyskierMervin's dedication
K-Dot.Libtech actually seems to give a shit about their environmental impact unlike just about every other ski brand, ON3P included but correct me if I'm wrong.
It's embarrassing that a sport that relies entirely on incredibly fragile climates is fueled by brands who don't give the slightest shit about their carbon footprint and subsequent contribution to climate change.
K-Dot.Appreciate the thorough, transparent response and the fact that ON3P makes a conscious effort. Two things:
- why isn't this marketing literature easily accessible? I'm clearly not the only consumer with these concerns and I doubt most people sharing these concerns are going to read these posts
- I still see 6 reasons why I should go buy libtech instead. Picky consumers cultivate necessary businesses, my power to consume is the only way to hold ski brands accountable for their ethics or lack thereof
Still, I appreciate that ON3P makes an effort and my criticism is more broadly focused on brands who continue to do nothing whatsoever. We should all demand better from brands that need us more than we need them
iggyskierThanks for the response. Happy to discuss them.
Regarding your questions, again, I can only speak in my situation.
1) Branding is hard and resources are limited. As you saw above, brands like Atomic are making an effort - but aren't putting the resources behind marketing it like Mervin, who has made it part of their brand identity. Its extremely hard to build a brand. Defining your brand is finite and there is only SO much info you can make part of that package. Once you define your brand, that is the void you dive into. If you spread yourself too thin, you dilute your brand. So, while brands obviously need to make their environmental efforts more known, those efforts aren't often worked into the brand's marketing identify, because that brand identity is limited in its ability to be broad. We're known for making durable, well finished skis. That, essentially, is our brand. I do not have the resource to brand ON3P as environmentally friendly. It wouldn't take, because the efforts I would need to build us up in that capacity our outside of our current fiscal capability and would detract from, essentially, the only thing people know us for.
Mervin has made the environment front and foremost in the same way we have made ski construction and finish. It is their identity. That is why you identify with them as the leader of managing environmental impacts within the industry.
2) You are correct. As a consumer, your power is in your dollar. Talking specifics, where you might see 6 reasons not to buy, I legit see 2 that actually apply to their overall production in a way that would have some sort of tangible effect - 5) Windpower and 6) Plastic Recycle - which we're not out of the running in...we just haven't found a solution to yet.
The flip side is...I can list a lot of reasons on the performance, construction, and finish end why you should go with ON3P over Libtech, those environmental reasons aside.
Your choice is your vote - everyone in business is working to earn that vote. As a discerning consumer, you have a lot of power. All brands can do is present to the consumer - this is why we do what we do - and hope that resonates.
And yes - I know your statement is broad. And I think your statement is good to address. I just think that, as with most things, this isn't black and white and perspective should be maintained to reflect that.
TWoodsI miss 2008-2012. Hasn't been topped in terms of style and overall progression.
It's hard to top the progression when it comes to rotations/grabs and tricks you can do on rails since those things are limited in a way. But there is still progression in small scale tricks like butters and presses. Personally I actually prefer the smaller tricks you can do on the new gen of skis (like the notorious ON3Ps) over hucking myself over huge kickers and spin to win. I think there are lots of skiers with good style nowadays as well: Jake Carney, Oliver Karlberg, keegan just to name a few. The difference nowadays is that it's really hard to work on your style without having the comp training falling short since style comes from repetition and variation of tricks that don't necessarily win comps. I feel like since the overall skill wasn't as high as nowadays in the comp scene, more guys managed to do both. The result is that the comp scene gets taken over by guys like Ragettli who focused on learning the biggest tricks and I can fully understand why they do it ... at the end of the day you have to get payed as a pro athlete.
BondySo done with the snow can’t WAIT for the bike season like chill 7 am bike park laps with the boys
chicknfriedsteakConsidering how gnarly the course was and the selection of riders that were there. The Nine Nines were a littler underwhelming this year. Not to disrespect what the riders we're doing, because Woodsys triple octos were as crazy as ever, Fabien did one of the most stylish triples ever done(th trip front) and Jespers switch loop and night run were nuts, but it feels like there has just been a lot less madness this year than usual. Overall less mind blowing tricks, but idk maybe there is still more footage that just hasn't been released
MaimHelpON3P is overrated and you can get much more for less money. I do not hate ON3P at all but I feel they are a bit over rated and every new kid wants them. Also you see in almost every ski thread someone recommends ON3P without actually riding their skis. Do not get me wrong I'd want a pair but there are different options for a lot less that will hold up.
Much respect for them guys at ON3P tho.

Ryanvdonkme too...and the skis then were better for the most part. most stuff out now is made for gapes and kids who live in the backseat.

tcurleI'm on your side on this, but are you only going to ski tour via your Tesla? Chairlifts and resorts are also pretty fucked when you think about. Imagine how much fuel is burned to make a half pipe let alone groom a whole mountain. Mass producing most things really isn't good by any environmental aspects. Do you have any realistic ideas for ski factories to help the environment?
Rum_HamCan't be a vegan without telling everyone right?
GrandThingsTruck drivers are ugly for any trick not done above a rail
K-Dot.Well, the guy literally said I eat meat. If I said you drive a car as an argument when you don't even own one, it wouldn't be going ouy of your way to clarify that you don't own one.
Can't be a carnist without making it a big deal that someone's vegan, right?
Nickc88Vegans are weird

IsitWinterYet17Vegans are weirder than people who don't have celiac disease and request gluten free food. Yeah I'm talking to all you gluten free phonies out there!
MortbrokemyskisOk that was me and I just meant it as you seemed very focused on buying things with marginally less environmental impact and I really hoped you weren’t doing that to make yourself feel better without actually living that life. Guess I spend too much time on this website though. I still think that a durable ski (on3p or moment or whatever) that can go a season or two longer will have less impact on the environment but that’s something else.
That’s not true. Vegans don’t hurt anyone but all these fake gluten intolerance people really detract from people with serious illnesses like celiacs. I take it you don’t know any celiacs though. Cutting gluten from your diet does literally nothing if you’re not a celiac or gluten intolerant but vegansim has proven benefits for the environment and other things.
IsitWinterYet17I believe you misunderstood my post. I know plenty of people with celiac disease. I was saying the fad no gluten diet is a joke and they're phonies. People with celiac disease actually have a medical reason to abstain. Vegans are weirder imo and I bet many people would agree with me. Doesn't mean it's right. Just that they're weird.
r00kieNew fad diet, not eating anything that was living. What kind of sick soul would take an innocent life?
IsitWinterYet17So rocks and water? Lol

Ryanvdonkhaha, so ignoring thousands of years of dietary evolution for a species is the way to go? Humans are meant to eat meat as well as vegetables (which are also a living organism), it is the most beneficial way for our bodies to get the proteins they need, our whole digestive tract is adapted to breaking down this food to most efficiently turn to nutrition. while you can fill the proteins through plant and nut based sources, you have to be far more careful and regimented to actually get what your body needs. to quote jim gaffigan about people trying to guilt trip him on his food selection "'Do you know what they do to those chickens?' No, but it's delicious."

IsitWinterYet17Here's what they do to "those chickens"

Just googled this and thankfully due to science, by 2020 they should be able to tell the sex before they hatch so they don't have to do this. Chicken abortions yay!

VinnieFThe latest ON3P edit is far too Bunch-like and 'creative' and it doesn't match with the style of skiers like Fostvedt.

dildotester69Nick Geopper and Andri Ragetli are sick skiers, and they are way better than Henrik. Henrik only does basic tricks but Nick and Andri throw down hard. I think Jesper has super sick style too.
SegsxiI don’t give one shit if you are a pro skier or not
If you don’t have respect.. you won’t get respect it’s that simple! Sure your ability levels may or may not be superior to mine.. but so what, assholes will get an asshole treatment from me
Edit: I just realize my last statement came out Extremely wrong lmfao What I meant to say was if you’re an asshole to me don’t expect me to kiss ass just because you are “Pro”.. keeping the “asshole treatment” though because that made me laugh.

VinnieFI feel like there's a story behind this
dildotester69why did ppl down like my post? Andri can do a quad cork, Henrik cannot. I don’t know why everyone says he has sick style and is king when Andri and Nick Goepper are better than him.
P.S. I think Gus is really doing a great thing for skiing. He’s giving our sport publicity but also showing that skiers have a sensitive side to them. Gus also has way better style than Henrik and is more creative.
