Would you go vegan for skiing?

I was thinking about this the other day because so many people have been going vegan. I figured you guys would have some interesting opinions.

So, with the issue of climate change threatening winter sports altogether, shouldn't it be noted that animal agriculture is one of the biggest causes of climate change? It seems like the simplest way to make an impact is the one that everyone ignores - eating less meat.

I think people going vegan, even if it was everyone would only make a small effect on the climate, and ruin the livelihood of a lot of people. The real issue I see effecting climate is with power generation. There still isnt a perfect way to generate power...
Dams are clean gas emission wise but can fuck up ecosystems and fish population. Nuclear is pretty good, the gas coming off nuclear plants is just steam (from what Ive gathered), but it does generate the nuclear byproduct that we dont know what to do with. Coal power is pretty awful but its cheap so for some countries its necessary. Solar and wind have promise but as of now it takes a lot of wind turbines and panels to get the same output as other options and have a high initial cost.

So No... I wouldnt go vegan.

I've changed up my diet a lot lately, not really from a climate standpoint, but just health in general.

moderation with everything for sure.
ive cut out a lot of dark/red meats for health reasons, and those seem to be the animals that are (supposedly) contributing to climate change.

Eating more fruits/vegetable isn't that bad, but I still like meats. It would be hard to go full veggie or vegan, as I love milk, and even healthier meats such as chicken and turkey.

vegan means to animals or animal by products right? That means no milk, eggs, meat, etc etc. just veggies/fruits/ligumes would suck.

youre entitled to think that, its just that its wrong. The ruining livelihood part is valid but its estimated agriculture accounts for 51% of green house gas emissions. Power generation will never be perfect, but we constantly work at it. We rarely work to make agriculture produce less emissions.

I'm not vegan because im a little bitch but if someone told me i would not be able to ski unless i was vegan i'd do it in a heartbeat. The thing is that concept is not as false as I'd like to to be. Skiing will go away if we just keep doing what we are doing, its just its not an immediate change so its so easy for us to sit around.

I don't think its fair to say that agriculture is one of the "biggest" causes. It definitely adds to it, but honestly TBH we've been eating meat since we were cavemen, not eating meat isn't going to save the planet...

Yeah but not at the same rate. So many more cows are around today than the cavemen times.

Yeah but in 2017 we're much, much more efficient and likely will become more efficient and green within agriculture too in the future. Cutting out meat won't save the planet, that's all i'm trying to say here, don't let the hippies trick you.

I wouldn't find it that challenging. Living in the city nowadays theres so many joints with bomb vegan menus. For health purposes I find myself chillin primarily on veg/fruit based diets day to day, and having an occasional steak or burger when im feeling like it anyway. If it was a literal decision based on never being able to ski again I would absolutely give up meat

Oh I 100% agree. We are efficient, but we are still pumping out so much waste in general.

We're just going to have to let technology run it's course and either we are fucked or we aren't. I mean honestly, in all of existence has there ever been a problem that human beings have preemptively solved? Hell no.

Definitely agreed. My friends fiancee is vegetarian and went to vegan so we went to this brewery she frequents and it was pretty damn good. I mean, I can safely say that meat dishes may be more tasty but if I had to give it up for skiing then hell yeah.

No. Took awhile to figure out what I did and didn't like and new staple meals. Back then there were fewer options when going out. These days it would be even easier.

I’m not vegan but the way i see it is EVERYONE would need to be vegan to actually have any real effect towards climate change. The majority of co2 emissions come from agricultural industries such as meat packaging, dairy industries, etc. Those companies would have to be shut down and out of the picture completely before going vegan would make any real lasting impact towards the environment. There are plenty of much better ways to help out the earth than going vegan. Find ways to fight dirty industries, donate to green organizations, or just clean up after your shit

This mentality of "Me not eating meat won't save the planet, so why even try" is a huge societal problem. Consumers CAN change demand, and they have. How many vegan industries/businesses existed 20 years ago? A growing population of vegen/vegetarian/climate conscious people have changed small sectors of the economy one person at a time. No, one person will not change the world, but many individuals deciding to at least try to make a difference can. There is a reason you see more veggie friendly restaurants popping up and there are more options in grocery stores. That's a corp response to individual demand changes. Who would have thought McDonald's would be testing a vegan burger?

Saying your choices won't effect anything is lazy. At least eat your burgers and understand the implications it has. Whether or not you act on that is different, but denying it makes a difference is nonsensical.

I see what you're saying - but those industries won't close down unless people switch over. This is exactly why the dairy industry is beginning to decline; everyone's switching to milk substitutes

Ah yes, the Daily Caller, founded by infamous climate change denier Tucker Carlson. I'm not going to bicker with you about what species stats are doing what, maybe it wasn't the best example because the bulk of climate change and its effects are still ahead of us. It is obvious that you either think climate change is fake news or you are choosing not to do anything about it, and I am not going to convince you otherwise.

I always love when someone is labeled a "denier" for pointing out when stats disagree or raise doubts about a current consensus. Science is based on being skeptical, but oh if you point out stats I don't like you are a science denier!

I was referring to Tucker Carlson and his website, not you, but cool. I'm no scientist and I'd agree that skepticism is always beneficial, whether it be in science, history, whatever. I appreciate your skepticism as maybe the polar bear was not my best example to use in that scenario. Maybe I should have said rising sea levels or something

The larger point here is that the climate is changing, and will continue to change, and some people want to make efforts to slow that down. I don't think those people should be belittled for making personal sacrifices trying to help everyone's future. My post you originally responded to was criticizing skiers for not caring more about the environment and you felt the need to attack that post. I think that speaks for itself.

I'm not in for 100% vegan but definitely trying to reduce red meat consumption - maybe having a couple of purely veggie meals each week. If everyone did the same it would have a a significant effect on the meat industry.
