SURF WAX?!?

I've always found it weird how I use wax for grip on my surfboard but use wax for slipperyness on skis.

Put anything with a hydrocarbon or flurocarbon base structure on your skis if you actually want to move on them. Hydrogen and fluorine are some of the most water resistant elements which is what makes you glide faster on snow. I know absolutely nothing about surf wax but if it has these elements in it, it could in theory work on skis. From what I read above tho, looks like thats not the case

It'd be cheaper to just use gulf wax and it works just as well if not better for handrails.

It's not the hydrogen, but rather the fact that the hydrocarbon chain is vastly different in polarity to the water molecule that helps create the water repulsion effect. The nature of the C-F bond helps create the same effect with a variety of substances, aka basically nothing sticks to teflon. Surface chemistry is important, but physical effects like friction and the melted water layer are also contributors in skis sliding around on snow.

Surf wax is hydrocarbon wax as well, but most likely with shorter chains, as evidenced by it's lower melting point and softer feel. I have tons of surf wax in various hardnesses. It'd be interesting to try. My bet would be that even warm water surf wax is softer than soft ski wax, so it will be stripped from the base too quickly to make much of a difference. Winter water wax is super soft, even in 30 degree water. Snow temp, dust content, crystal structure of the snow and all that kind of stuff will matter as well, so there's probably an ideal condition where surf wax would work to some extent.

I wonder what'd happen if I waxed one of my boards with ski wax. Seems like it'd tear my nipples off and be abrasive/hard.

Ski wax costs $15-30 for a decent bar that will last a while. Just get some.

Okay, if you have a boatload of free wax... go for it because its better than no wax. Just don't be stupid and go out and buy this instead of ski wax.
