Does Anybody Actually Like Those Rail Shots?

The shots where the person does a trick on a rail and as they come off, the camera gets pushed into the rail. Even if it's actually fluid I think it looks like shit, but 90% of the time it looks like the people are about to fall down doing it. The camera will shake sometimes as they run toward the rail to make sure they get that dope shot.

Idk. Maybe it's just me but I can't watch edits that are mostly filmed like that. Even if the tricks are all bangers.

Just wondering if people actually like them, or if everyone does it because it's trendy.

I can respect it but I'm not a fan. I haven't seen it used in skiing as well as it is in skating.

Not a fan. It takes zero skill and/or creativity on the filmers part. It also doesn't focus on the ride out, which everyone knows is the best part of skiing.

Very aggravating when you’re trying to get a decent shot for one of your friends and some kid is rushing up to the rail to get right under it every few minutes.

I’m not a photographer or filmer, so I’m trying to just get one devent shot. I’ve been asked to move bc they’re trying to get a close up and I’m like, uhh I’m seriously almost 10+ feet away how am i even in your way.

End rant.

Just tried to watch a couple opening weekend edits. Ugh.

They should start digging trenches next to the feature so the filmer can get even lower. I don't think the camera at snow level is low enough to really capture the tricks on rails.

Second half of this. Pretty much every opening day edit and most places rail edits. At least in these ones you can see the ride away. Usually they just move in on a point of the rail, sometimes cutting off the ride out.

Generally that super low angle pointed up, then as they come off the rail you move the camera into the rail, like almost hitting it. In fact people have actually smacked there cameras into rails doing this.

Better if you have to walk a few steps to make it really shaky as you go in for it. Bonus points if you use it in every shot.

It's been around for several years but the last few it's pretty much every edit.

I've seen 2 minute plus park edits where every shot was like this. I guess a rail height shot that follows the rider out smoothly would be super lame compared to pushing the camera into the rail all janky.

Idk. It doesn't really matter, I just click out of those edits.

^ this gives a pretty good example of those types of shots. It's like some sort of tick. Above everything else, even if you you have to jump over a bunch of stuff and run, make sure you end every shot with the camera up against the rail.

I personally think the fluid shots even from close look way better. The pull out and push in to the rail to start/end every clip is kind of whack imo.

I don't see how this has anything to do with hating on skating. Sure those shots are popular in skate edits. I don't really care. I don't watch a lot of skating anyway. I'm specifically talking about skiing and snowboarding.

No reason to be offended.

imo they are acceptable in 2 situations:

A: its the last feature of a line

B: you film at the end of the rail instead of the middle

It's definitely overused though, thats not the only way to film fisheye and more importantly fisheye isnt the only way to film

I think that's the biggest thing. If shots were mixed it wouldn't be bad. I'm not the biggest fan but I can get down with a little bit of everything. I've seen too many rail edits that were nothing but that. Especially when it's choppy as hell and not even remotely clean in many of them. It just seems so forced.

I like it, I can't seem to get into the shots that are far away. Especially tripod shots, I just don't feel like i'm there. With the close up shots I feel the like i'm actually in the moment. Just my taste tho.

I wouldn't agree at all. Dude should have just put on some skis. Shits kinda choppy.

I guess it just comes down to personal opinion.
