The International Olympic Committee aka the IOC aka the Supreme Shitlords of the Olympics have announced that "“esports” should absolutely be considered a sport."



Look at that finger speed! The agility! The precision!



Essentially, what they are saying, is that esports = any sport that is in the Olympics. In my opinion, I think this is pretty whack. Yes, esport pros train a lot to become the Candide's of their respective video games. Yes, every pro in Counter Strike would shit on me blindfolded while using dial-up. Does that mean they belong on the same stage as the skiers, boarders, or anyone else that participates? No.

they may not be as 'athletic' but some of these guys get paid a lot more than most athletes in the Olympics. its all about the $$ if its there it will happen.

i think comparing it to sports is hilarious its something entirely different, as different as playing an instrument is to a sport. its sick in its own respectt tho. ive clocked my hours in on shredsauce and skate 3 for sure. it takes skill to play but its not comparable to the skill it takes to play sports. although its rad that some videogames can be played pretty realistically like skiinf skateboarding and other olympic sports and that they can be played at comps in conjunction with their respective sport i think that comparing the pros ability, the difficulty of the game or an of that is futile.

Ofc it's a sport... I mean, the dumbest thing I've ever heard is that the word sport means physical activity, sport is the definition of competitive events, not physical activity... If esport is not a sport, then chess and pool aren't sports either... But they are, which means that esport is a sport too...

Hell no, it's not a sport! According to Merriam Webster, a sport is "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." Although esports may take a little bit of time to get good at, it is nothing compared to the physical work that real skiers have to endure.

The only reason they're doing this is because they realize how much money they can make off esports.

Few people actually think gaming is a sport; Esports is just a catchy name and more people are cashing in on it as it becomes mainstream.

I don't have a problem with this really. Like what harm does this really do to the skiing events let alone free skiing events? Freeskiing events are still getting bigger in the Olympics (wheither you like that or not) and that's what will help the sport grow

Fair enough lol but also remember that the Olympics are in Korea which means most events are gonna be going down while us in North America are asleep. So most events brodcasted will be either cut for the country highlights or for the medal winners

This is stupid and rustles my jimmies a bit. I've been in the competitive scene for a minute and I have two friends that both play on esports teams. If you asked either of them if esports should be in the olympics/xgames they would say absolutely not. While the skill and time put into esports is respectably there is no physical risk or physical activity. Why isn't chess in the xgames? It simply doesn't bring in the money and that's all the committees care about. Like it or not there is a shit ton of money in esports and esports comps have pretty much guaranteed viewers.

I just would rather xgames focused on sports rather than games. There's no shortage of gaming comps and tournaments, and I doubt that there are large groups of esports players advocating to be in the Olympics. It's just committees trying to tap into the cashflow.

I just don't think eSports or chess is really in the spirit of the Olympics. When you think Olympics you think the best athletes pushing themselves to the limit (don't say "gamers are athletes Hur sure") to win a medal for their country. Not a bunch of gamers really.

Not gunna lie, i don't really play video games but I've seen some of the Counter Strike shit on ESPN and its actually hella fun to watch. The announcers are super hype and they're all gods at the game so it's kinda sweet. In moderation of course tho, it gets old kinda quick tho.

Ok, maybe bit of an exaggeration, but I wouldn't say your average park skier is nothing more than that either. Just to clarify, I personally don't think video games should be considered as a "real" olympic sport and have events in the actual olympics, but rather have a seperate event, like "elympics" or something lol. I just find it funny that people here bash on competition skiers who actually work out and then criticise esports for not enough athleticism. I truly, truly don't think members of the Bunch for example are any more fit than an average video gamer.
I think it's underappreciated how much effort it actually takes to play games as a profession. Yes, you can be unfit and play, but that's not giving any longetivity in your career, since it's actually physically and mentally demanding to play a lot. Even injuries come to play if you don't excercise at all (back, wrist injuries).
But then again, many people don't recognize many things, such as poker, snooker, or even golf and Formula 1 as real sports. The spectrum of sports is enlargening all the time, it's debatable if that's a good thing. The fact is that there's so much money involved in the gaming industry, so I guess the Olympics want a piece of that. Idk

I don't actually think this is what they are saying. There are plenty of nonathletic "sports" (chess, etc.) that are already part of the Olympics, none of which take anything away from the legitimacy of skiing, or any other event for that matter.

Should gaming be an Olympic event? Probably not. But claiming it implies that "gamers are as athletic as skiers" seems like a reach.

Sports are mostly games as well... doesn’t mean they can’t be sports. Basketball, baseball, soccer, football are all just games but still are sports

i guess sure, in terms of the way the brain functions and all that cognitive stuff. Im sure video games require a lot of brain power and take a lot of focus and practice to get reallllly good at but with skiing/other extreme sports, you're combining mental games with the physicality aspect of it and esports don't even come close, but they're both two extremely different things.

it would be insulting to consider esports an Olympic event but money talks and bullshit walks. Kids are more stoked on someones kill/death ratio and the parents nowadays allow it.

I wouldn't undermine the level of play that some professional game teams operate at, for example in Dota 2 or Smash bros; these games have such bewilderingly complex depth and extremely esoteric competitive scenes. Think about all of the time you've spent skiing, and then double it: at that point you would be competent enough to play at low-level tournaments if that time was spent in practicing these games.
I wouldn't compare them to olympic sports, however. Esports aren't and shouldn't be related to something like track and field.

Lol video games fall under the same category as chess, they’re both competitive games not physical activities. I’d argue that if there’s either no physical training (like time in the gym) or risk of physical injury (stuff like skateboarding because most of those guys don’t hit the gym) present then it’s not a sport. Yes, golf is a sport because people get hurt playing it but pool isn’t a sport it’s a game.

1. Most gamers are cooler than you

2. Many gamers make more than you do or ever will.

3. based on the fact that about 10 times more kids try video games than try sports, world class pro gamers have hand eye coordination that would shit all over pro tennis players or fighter pilots.

4. Its reasonable to consider hand eye coordination an athletic talent, so its reasonable to consider pro gamers athletes.

5. If being a whore was a sport your mother would be in the olympics too.

True, there used to be a shooting person in my gym and he would walk in with a target, take out his laser shooting gun and spend 2 hours trying to be accurate. Literally no physical demand, it’s as much as a sport as juggling or water bottle flipping.
