Dreads and Skiing

Just wanted to get an opinion here, it seems that pretty much everyone but skiers now view white dudes with dreads as culturally appropriative and not chill since like the 2000's, with so many skiers rockin the dreads, like harlaut, spriggs, emil granbom, just wondering what you all think? Is the preservation of the subcultural identity of og steeze more important than recognizing other cultural identities or is this something that yall just dont give a fuck about?

Right so option 3 plus some anger, Im not hating on these guys, theyre on top of the game and are unquestionably stylish dudes, I was just trying to get a feel for what some other people think about something that skiing hasnt seemed to address at all

Who cares if you have dreads. Sure most people with them are black, but white dudes can have dreads too. I think they look cool on some people. Myself personally wouldn't never want dreads cuz they get nasty af with all that dead hair that never falls out. Plus I am not cool enough for dreads hahaha

In my opinion, with the world we live in today the boundaries of different cultures have merged, mixed and evolved so much that it doesn't really matter. hell the US is called a mixing pot for a reason! I find it ridiculous that people can believe they have "exclusive" cultural ownership of something as simple as a hairstyle. The only time I understand where people are coming from who are really against cultural appropriation is when something is obviously trying to mock/make fun of a culture.

not really. it's different because dreads are a core part of jamaican culture and lifestyle. it doesn't belong to some white cis male who wants to be "hip". food on the other hand is necessary to surval and is usually defined by what sorts of ingredients you can find near your home, its not something you do to have an identity. white people listening to rap music is actually them respecting the roots of rap music that came from people of color. white people making rap music on the other hand is cultural theft and i don't accept it.

You need to explain further. From a solely musical standpoint, are bands like Tribal Seeds, Stick Figure, Fortunate Youth, Rebelution, SOJA, etc. not dong it right enough for you?

Skiing is essentially white culture, right. It has nordic roots and and freeskiing, the basis of this forum, was undoubtably created and continues to be stewarded by white people. All that said, you don't have to be white to ski and nobody would ever claim that. The problem with the idea of cultural appropriation is that it is directly contradictory to the concept of diversity and our proverbial melting pot. Are we supposed to separate ourselves based on our heritage? Because that doesn't sound like a great policy.

Yeah, appropriation isn't the same as cultural exchange or assimilation. As a white person it's considered offensive to 'borrow' aspects of a culture you've spent the last ten generations oppressing.

Also just keep in mind that this probably would be a non issue if there weren't still such wealth and achievement gaps between whites and blacks in this country, and there's a lot of systemic reasons to explain that.

I'm not trying to be all high and mighty here, people getting offended on behalf of other people is really obnoxious, I am just explaining why this is a thing.
