Computer geeks please help me: Wi-fi driver not working

NS computer geeks. Please help me. Suddenly, the "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter" is not working. When I go in to the "device manager" and click on it's properties, it says the following:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful."

I tried searching the internet, but everything suggested simply disabling and re-enabling it, which I had already tried and did not work. Please see the screenshot to get a better idea of what I'm talking about. I am able to connect to the internet through plugging into the modem directly, but WiFi is not working because of whatever that adapter is.

I have a Lenovo Y510P running Windows 8.1 if that helps.

Popcorn Time still works??

That error makes me think your wireless card physically failed. Which is possible.

Try downloading the correct driver from Lenovo website and reinstall and see if it works.

If it still doesn't then find someone with a boot disk/usb drive of Ubuntu or Mint or something (or make one yourself). Boot into that and see if the wireless works.

If it doesn't work like that then your wireless card is most likely caput. Or on the off chance a wire got loose check the plugs on the wireless card. They're normally easy access.

You should be able to order the same wireless card off Newegg or something for like 30 bucks. Or just get one of those $10 wireless usb dongle things. They work but not as well for distance.

Also all I said may be useless.. The Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter isn't the wireless card driver. The wireless card driver would be the one right above it. I didn;t look well enough at the screen shot

Does it help that Ive been repeatedly getting a blue screen of death saying that there was a "driver state error"?

This is from the Lenovo website.. This should be the proper driver:

https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/0cy7019f.exe


But I'm not so sure this is your problem since "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter" isn't the same thing. It's for setting up wifi hotspots. But of course it wouldn't work if your wireless card doesn't work.


And your wireless just doesn't work at all right now and can't see any networks?

You should be able to install reinstall the driver and that should reset it

Thanks for trying to find the driver, but I downloaded the driver from that link and it said it was a bluetooth driver, which is not the issue (which you forewarned). I cannot find this driver I need anywhere (from a website that doesn't look like it'll give me a virus).

How does one uninstall a driver, then reinstal it if you've already uninstalled it and cannot find said driver to download and reinstall? Seems like a vicious circle.

My ethernet cable is working for now, but I take my computer for work sometimes and need to have the wifi working.

I searched on both the lenovo site and the microsoft site and found nothing.

I miss the good ol' days where you could call Microsoft (or any company) without having to pay for customer support.

If you've uninstalled the driver what I'm talking about won't work. As far as resetting drivers, while in device manager, you can select the driver you want to use. In doing so the driver will reinstall itself if selected

No entiendo. How do you reset it if you don't have a working driver to select? I'm worried that if I uninstall the wi-fi driver that's causing issues (and I cannot find a download for), it's going to screw things up even more.

A lot of time the driver functions but the device manager thinks that there is faulty hardwear for some reason. Usually from device manager you can select the nonfunctional device and look at its driver properties. If the device st one point had a driver on the computer you can select it and install it and a lot of times it rectified the error. I've used this many times when USB hubs have thrown errors when the devices using them draw too much power

Once in device manager expand the device in question. Right click it. Select update driver software, the select "Browse my computer for driver software." Then select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
This will display a list of compatible drivers, just click next to go ahead with the reinstallation of the driver however if the list is blank this won't work. After this it should work again

OK first of all, thank you for the help.
Second, I followed your instructions and the current "adapter" was the only thing that showed up. I clicked next and I got the same error code that shows up in properties :"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"


Here's a screenshot of it. Ideas?

Turns out it was something called the "Windows PROset" or similar. My roomate got home from vacation and uninstalled it... and my wireless magically started working again!
