WPA54G
and
WPC54G
will work fine. Otherwise, if you need a router replace the WPA54G with
WRT54G

Since you seem set on linksys. don't bother getting 802.11b stuff.

If you are going wireless with broadband I would suggest a wireless G-band router and 2 usb wireless G adapters. You dont sound like much of a computer person so going with the USB adapters is the easiest way to get up and running...and you can use them if a friend brings a computer over. If you stick with the linksys brand you need 1xWRT54G and 2xWUSB54G. I also suggest netgear for home setups (cheaper and good product) which would be 1xWGR614 and 2xWG111. And then run that into a tranfuser X90-705b to feed the residual transducer P-109. You can operate those two devices with a directional control valve 90V series, hook it up with HXR cables. Oh and if you want wireless, do away with the HXR and just use incandescent LED's.

^funny and ^^^ thanks. I work fine with comps and am not set on linksys. I have all netgear now but just burnt a network card (5 bucks)out in the desktop and figured wireless would be good since the security and 802.11b stuff is history. I'll proly get a netgear router and USB recievers like suggested just for ease of use. I mostly want it b/c there is free wireless internet all over town.

linksys shit is about as reliable as our president...go with an apple airport express...not only is it a router but you can also have wireless printing as well as wirelessly play your music from your comp through your stereo or home theater system all through itunes, they're small as fuck too!

senor-forgot_how_to_spell_the_rest, i'm gonna have to almost completely disagree. I've purchased over 120 linksys nics in the last 4 years (installing networks) and I've only once run into a problem where their original pcmica nics wouldn't transmit a signal strong enough across a 200 foot span. The problem was 3 years ago and has since been fixed with their newer chipsets.

On top of that, Cisco bought Linksys. That doesn't mean their stuff's gonna all of the sudden be more unbreakable, but the quality of the chips are going up (and becoming more and more annoying to *nix users like me).

Apple stuff is good and I run 90% apple for development at my house, but to put the apple stuff on a pedestal is a little over the top. If I misread what you meant, sorry. The airport express is pretty damn nice though.

802.11b/g/a security is all garbage. WEP anything has been cracked and aircrack now does it in even less time than programs like airsnort. WPA and the 802.11i isn't so hot either. People who really care use vpn, but you're also running wireless at home so are you more concerned w/people getting at your shit or people using your network?

my only proof is that myself as well as others dealt with a linksys router that didn't work straight out of the box, so we called tech. support which was in india and not helpful, so they sent us a refurb model after we spent the money on a new one...we didnt even use it because by that time i had bought the apple router, which worked perfectly straight out of the box, it never lost its signal or anything...i've heard of similar things happening to other people with linksys products as well...it just seems as tho apple stuff is always more reliable and consistent with delivering a great product

hahah ok...yeah, that's definitely true. i forgot about that part. 3 years ago i never bought a linksys router. the chip would fry beyond reflashing so that dhcp and even static ips wouldn't work. for home routers, i always purchased netgear, unless people were willing to spend the cash on the symantec stuff.

I'm pretty sure those problems are gone now though (since cisco's acquisition). The WRT54G router is pretty damn good and you can boot other people's firmwares on it for things like vpn and packet sniffing.

i have the laptop pc card and the router. Both work excellently although I have trouble getting a connection in my room.(2 floors and opposite side of the house).

all off-the-shelf brands have problems and I have had problems with every one of them over my years of networking. He asked for 'cheapest' and Netgear has been a good product for the price. As far as wireless security goes you have to have a little knowledge of what your doign to at least make your wireless somewhat 'secure'. Home user gear doesnt offer you many options in the way of closing your network, but there are still things you can do to keep it from being a very obvious and vulnerable target. Most people arent out to hack your network, if they are anything like me they are simply scanning for an easy internet connection, and if yours has a few simple defaults changed they are most likely just going to move on.

Otherwise...be that nerd, buy a WRT54G for like 60 bucks and install Sveasoft's firmware. Use PP2P VPN and restrict all wireless to vpn connections only.

the sveasoft stuff is free. only the newest, 'test' firmware versions aren't released. they just consider them prereleases and ask for a $20 donation to get access to them...that way they don't violate the gpl.

There are a number of other third party firmwares available here, it's just that the sveasoft is the more(most) popular one and the best documented.
