So as the title says, I've graduated beyond the alpinist skins I'd been using on some 120 waisted pow skis for the past few years. When I bought skins for these, I went for 140mm, trimmed where necessary and never looked back.
My new touring option is 116 underfoot and near 140 in the tip / 130 in the tail. I was in at my local shop last week and placed an order for some new BD skins, I opted for the MoMix version to see how noticeable mohair is compared to nylon. The shop tech I order from is super knowledgeable and knew the skis I was pairing these with.
Fast forward to today, and I've got my skins home. I didn't realize that his shop opts for the 'custom' line of BD skins, which basically means that they're pre-assembled like G3. You don't need to screw in the nose or tail clasps. However, this is a pain in the ass since these skins also only come in a single width - 125mm.
So unfortunately, I'm faced with using a skin that leaves a good little bit of ptex exposed near the tip, and a small amount near the tail. I took a rough measurement when I was sizing them up and saw that they fully cover the base, edge to edge, for about 3/5ths of the length. At both ends, the skin seems to cover base completely until after the rocker starts, so the ski shouldn't even be contacting snow all that often where it's slightly exposed.
I'm happy with these skins other than the width. I can either return these and try my luck at another store, or stick with what I've got (provided it won't impact my enjoyment). My only experience with buying skins thus far has been with fully covered bases, so I'm wondering if I'm way overthinking it.
Found some stock photo of a skin on a ski, mine would cover a fair bit better than this.
