TGR's "Rogue Elements"

My university put on a premiere of this movie last night, and I thought I was stoked to ski before....I'm now a little boy a Christmas morning before opening presents.

I'd give the movie 9/10. Highly, highly recommend buying. John Collinson's segment was absurd. McNutt is the smoothest person I've ever seen in the back and side country. And the mountain bike down Corbet's?!? Not everyone I talked to was as stoked on the movie as I. What were your thoughts?

Except for the weakest ending segment in all of ski history, it was an OK movie. Cam McCaul saved that movie.

I know you're usually trollin.. but Rogue Elements was actually my least favorite overall movie this year.. and maybe that I have ever seen. I am usually a big fan of the TGR films. Love Tight Loose, One for the Road, McNutts segment in Almost Ablaze. Something about Rogue Elements just didn't do it for me...

Yeah that was sick! Honestly, I think it was the soundtrack that killed the vibe for me. There was some good skiing throughout, but a lot of it was slow. Half the time it seemed like they were talking about how crazy weather is yada yada. Idk. It just didn't give off the same vibe that TGR movies normally give off. Also, pretty hard to top last years film.

I agree on the soundtrack. Only a couple songs did it for me....tight loose pretty much the entire thing got me amped.

Exactly. Tight Loose was probably my favorite movie of all time as a whole. Seemed like every segment in there was killer music, killer shredding, the whole 9 yards.

Hard to put out killer movies every year. I wonder if REI had anything to do with it or if they are just a big sponsor. Guess since I have low expectations next years film will be good though;)

Im only being harsh cause I know TGR is better than this. Crazy Karl and some other dude had a killer urban seg in Almost Ablaze.


for any of you who hasn't seen Rogue, it's still worth a watch, I just didn't enjoy it as much as other TGR movies nor movies this year:/

Idk. Watch it for yourself. Wasn't my cup of tea, especially for a TGR movie. I've talked to people who really liked it though.

The urban segment was definitely 'artsy' but it was due in part to snow conditions. The whole thing is staged in Duluth, MN but there was a huge lack of snow there so they had to pull shots from another location as well to make it a segment. And then the art fillers topped that off I suppose. You also have to take into consideration their audience, TGR's main demographic isn't the park rat, and while maybe 30% of viewers can get off to some nice handrails, that isn't the case for everyone else, so I'd attribute the 'art' to keeping the interest of everyone as a whole as well.

LOL. Snow conditions? It's urban, not Alaska. I thought urban was cool cause of the features and lack of snow. There have been many good urban segments where they are in similar locations or dealing with little snow.

I mean they were literally hauling the same snow from an ice rink from feature to feature across the city. Obviously the lack of snow adds a cool effect, but think of how much less they were able to accomplish in their time frame by the added time it takes to move and build.

That's nothing new. Tracing Skylines Detroit segment they were doing similar stuff.. hauling in snow. I mean, if their time frame was small, that sucks, but the editing was still meh. Whatever though, I'm probably just an entitled little movie watcher. Still with a watch imo, but wasn't that good overall is what I'm saying.

I liked it significantly more than Tight Loose. I think that some sort of elaboration on the nature and difficulty of urban would've enhanced that segment beyond just being "artsy", it could've been more impressive to an audience that isn't familiar with it if it showed the other side to it. It's something I think Level 1 always makes a point of, like LJ's repetition in Habit, which increases stoke for both the rider and the shot itself. Other than that the soundtrack was rad, and I was reminded of how much I fw Cam McCaul hahaha

Damn...a lot of hate for this movie. Maybe I made it out to be better than it actually was due to it being aired on a big screen, the first movie I've seen all year, and being overly hyped for skiing. Or maybe ya'll don't know what you're talking about. Haha either way.

But TGR has done urban parts before. And they weren't like this.

and sorry if I am giving the movie a negative image, IT REALLY IS WORTH A WATCH, there is some good skiing. But overall as a whole, the message, the soundtrack, the vibe, yada yada, it was not my favorite movie. Not the classic TGR I love so much either.

I've only seen 1 other TGR movie before, so if this is the case, then yes it is disappointing they had a line up of urban skiers like this and did that.

Ha. Too each their own, but I liked the artsy urban segments in the Sherpa movies. It was a good kind of artsy. I liked All.I.Can, but Into the Mind only had its moments.

So I finally watched Rogue Elements. I'm a huge fan of TGR, and I think they are masters at hitting the right vein almost every time......ALMOST. Rogue Elemets had some great scenes, but as an overall product it left me flat. I think a huge part of that was Sage being out. He's just a monster. His personality and skiing are perfect. While some other players are coming along, and are looking to fill prominent spots int the future as they develop not just as skiers, but personalities. No one has what he has. Sage is the foundation at this point.

And I don't give a fuck that the urban part was too artsy. If you just want urban bangers, then look somewhere else.

My biggest issue with the movie was not enough Durtschi love I feel that he is one of TGR's best riders but doesn't get the minutes of film he deserves

I definitely missed Sage. He is arguably the best skier in the world, although I would probably go with Candide. Not having him really hurts.

I still liked the movie, but I have liked other TGR stuff better. I skipped over the urban segment, I'm not the guy to ask about that.

From the movies I've seen this year, I think Numinous and Drop Everything are better. Disclosure that I skied Squaw everyday for half a decade, so seeing it featured the way it was in Drop Everything was awesome.

Numinous is the ski movie of the year. The spine walls and natural airs are unreal. The whistler boys (and Tatum) did work

There hadn't been snow in duluth for a couple weeks to a month when they came to film. They hired a snow moving company to haul snow from huge snowbanks with dump trucks (not ice rinks erica). Last year was awful for snow here in Duluth. I was able to check out a couple of the shoots for it. When I heard the explanation for how it was going to be a segment of urban skiing amidst the lives of ordinary citizens I was stoked. That's something fresh (even though it was extremely staged). It's staged because it's a movie and imaginations can run wild, also this is big budget TGR not Stept. It doesn't have to fit the cookie cutter urban segment formula of bangers to a good song to be a good urban segment, just saying.

All that said, I still haven't seen it.

So TGR mostly uses rumblefish for music to avoid licensing issues. As a result they sometimes pull fresh tracks that I’ve never heard of and sometimes they make bad picks. Not sure why they do this other than to save time. They should have a team of broke interns booking hot tracks for cheap. For example a few years ago odesza let them use songs AND played the premier afterparty at the mangy moose

Almost Ablaze so 2014 I think. Odesza released their album A moment apart then too. They started their fall tour in jackson with that show and almost ablaze used some unreleased song from the album. They also hooked up lyndsey with free tracks for the pretty faces flick too like the one in the bc cat ski segment

I'll give you a hint, its because they're cheap assholes clinging onto a dead media platform and they're trying to use shitty bands and their shitty music to stay afloat while claiming they're being "hip" with their crappy music choices.... all the while not paying the athletes shit.

The ski movie industry is much like the record industry 10 years ago. They're trying to still profit off the talents of others simply because of their "outreach" power which has been demolished because of the internet. There's a reason why most athletes have been doing their own personal projects and why personal branding has taken the front stage over "production" companies like TGR, Level 1, MSP, etc.

Idk what all this hate is about, I saw the premiere in boulder and it was so dope. maybe not the BEST i’ve ever seen, but no doubt a great film with some crazy shots. the bike part was insane

This all seems salty (i get it... thats your character here) but mostly correct. I’m surprised those 3 cos are still consistently making top 5 ski movies year after year in this flawed model. I was shocked to hear that level1 not only doesn’t pay athletes anything at all, but for everyone except the superunknown winner, the athletes’ sponsors need to pony up $10k+ to buy the athlete a segment... this explains Zane’s comical but kinda real beef w level 1. Correct me if this is inaccurate

You're right. Not just Level 1 though. TGR athletes have to pay quite a bit too. I think in the Jon Spriggs interview he said they wanted close to 40k? And I think you have to pay for your travels as well. Lodging might be covered.. all just kinda depends.
