Nature and Depression

Sorry for being a drag but I had to express this.

I think the main reason why so many people are depressed today is because they go do a job, inside, with artificial lighting. Go home and eat shity food and their body is like wtf. Humans evolved to be working and doing shit outside not spending 80% of our time doing shit we could care less about. Fucking go outside, get fakin lose on ur MTB. NATURE FUCKING FIXES ME

Then I go to school and I'm like how am I gonna use trigonometry in real life there's no reward for spending 6+ hrs inside doing jack shit all I want to do is bum in the mountains and live peacefully cant my parents get off my ass about worthless shit

i love nature, but it didn't stop me from trying to kill myself. Meds helped. Doing shit in nature is legit what my therapist told me to do. Movement is so important.

Getting out and doing things is important to stay healthy, but depression is a disease.

Simply going for a hike and hugging a tree, isn't going to cure depression.

I work a job I love, snowboarding year round which I love, traveling a bunch which I love, eating much better than I used to, and I'm still fucking depressed.

Also I love to hike. The month or so before I left for the southern hem I spent camping on public lands and hiking all over CO and UT. It was great, it makes me feel good, but it didn't keep me from being depressed.

I try to force myself to do shit sometimes when I' really depressed, because it's nice to get out and do shit, but it doesn't magically fix everything.

I don't think it's the intention of your OP, but it feels as if you're saying "Throw away your medication, and buy a mountain bike. You're not sick, you just haven't gotten loose enough"

bumming in the mountains did not help my depression & anxiety, it actually made it worse after a while. Basic education seems useless for sure but putting the time in unlocks so much opportunity both externally and internally. Being aware of how utterly amazing this life is regardless of the shitty things that may be happening around and within us is something that can help. It's not a cure and it might not work for everyone but learning about some of the incredible things we've discovered via science has pulled me away from my dark side more than anything else. Getting sweaty outside is pretty key as well but its not the only key in my case.

Made the decision years ago not to have a desk job for this very reason, despite having the ability and being in the academic track (long ago) to do well in business/finance/law/academia/whatever. I'm never going to be wealthy but I can spend time outside every day if I want to. Trigonometry will actually help you for real though, if you ever have to build anything, do landscaping or mapping.

Nature helped me get back on track. When I was living out east, people would be constantly telling me I sucked. Family was a pressure point and being broke in a big city didnt help.
Moving away and running away brought some calm to my life. Changed friends, scenery changed my perspective on life. Its not about being the boss at your job thats important, but appreciating what you have.
Skiing, freeride biking and climbing helped me focus and overcome anxiety. Nothing is more important than what is ahead of you when doing those sports. Hiking 60km away from home makes you appreciate the moment and accomplish your goals and gives a feeling of satisfaction. Something you cant get while wasting your life on the computer or watching TV

Nature has always been a go to for me but it doesnt completely take the feeling away. Depression is something we all deal with one way or another and can weigh heavy on us. Nature does seem to lighten the load but it will still reside in you if you dont do something about it with counseling and help. We are our own worst enemy and we take our own selves down when we need to be picking ourselves and others up around us. We all have our own definition of depression and triggers but we need to learn to control them and handle them before we get too down and its to late. We are all people, far from perfect, we learn, we teach, we keep moving on and we need to keep kicking ass.
