If you want to make money from photography your best bet is to have a client paying you to take the photos in the first place. Print sales can be reasonable, but you generally need to be a highly established name to get into a gallery, and then the gallery will take a not insignificant cut of the sale. Stock photos can make some money but I find it's not worth my time and most places like shutterstock are mostly taking advantage of you. If you're dead set on selling your prints as art you probably need to have a project with a strong artist's statement and theme or message to really do it right.
Lots of ways to tackle selling your photos. If you're trying to sell action shots, it's a flooded market so the shots need to be killer and showcase something specific and of course be an athlete someone cares about. Aside from actually being contacted for specific shoots, the best way to sell to mags and websites is just by emailing them photos they may be interested in.
I've never gone the stock photo route. But, it could be a decent way to have a few extra bucks...
Unless you're a well knows photographer, selling prints and actually making a good return on them is rare.
