I feel you man. I am taking a gap year to work at Breck as a rental guy. Im so fucking hyped man cause I’m used to skiing at Whitetail PA which had decent rails but utter trash for jumps. Breck is gonna be a huge improvement and step up.

Im lucky man I have pretty much already secured employee housing for the rest of summer and fall into winter. I decided to try to get out here asap and save some money to get some ON3P kartel 116s for the season.

T.L.Why do I continue to invest time at resorts that want to downsize and chip away at the park program until it's dead?

RIP Rodeo Park.

Anyone else seeing any downsizing or reallocation of terrain park resources?


I do miss the rodeo at beaver creek but beaver creek never gave a fuck about park. Vail kinda cares golden peak can be pretty fun but with Copper, Keystone and Breck a short drive away I don't mind what Vail or Beaver creek does because if im skiing park for the day its gonna be in summit county not Eagle.

thetrainparkPage 2 got sad fast! Good first post for this account though - in the midwest the park scene isn't dying. Trollhaugen is going strong, and Buck started the neveplast setup. Most resorts aren't sure where to invest but they're definitely willing to. If the park scene is enjoyable and the kids riding want to stay there all day long, the resorts will make money at the bar or restaurant. That's all they need to see. If the park is terrible and the experience is bad, it's more likely people will poach.
Mostly i need this in our threads cause it's money for feedback for our own thing. If it cheers you up, we have a volunteer park crew in MN that travels and helps parks reset. If you're not one of the park crew guys in this thread - go volunteer for a reset this season, they'll be stoked for the setup input and free help. idk about all-board crews. I had luck telling them I just want to help dig so we can do more changes! -Karl

Mountaineer parks is probably one of the worst-led crews in all of the east coast. They get good, creative welders and builders from all over the Pocohantas, Randolph, and Webster County high schools, plus intl people who are very skilled, have some of the best snow and snowmaking in the mid-atlantic, but the director blew dick for half a season last year then dipped to wyoming.

In one of these threads 17 degrees was thrown around as a good kink angle I think, does that sound about right?

Every kink feature I've ever built has been 15 degrees. It's always worked for me.

Personally I wouldn't go much over 15. I kind of like mellow. Also it depends how much stuff you have. If it's your only dfd I wouldn't go too crazy. As long as it's not toooo mellow even better skiers can still have fun, and people aren't as scared they're going to die. More tricks go down on them.

Heres a couple pictures of a 12 or 12.5 degree one I built like 6 years ago. Didn't wanna spend too much time looking for pics but you can kind of get the idea. Dimensions were 14',6',14' You could still get enough pop to spin into or over the down, but could also hit it low and fast which is fun on kinks.

Also snowmaking is a good way to get into parks or grooming. Places always need snowmakers. Once you're already an employee it's easier to keep you around and move you into one of those spots than justify hiring a person sometimes. Also by the time mid season roles around sometimes a couple people have already quit, been fired, or gotten wrecked.

Sounds cool! Mellow rails have always been the most fun for me. Especially learning to do swaps. I think Whistler has their mellow kinks around 12 degrees and their steeper ones around 15-16 degrees.

Park crew can be tough to get into even at a small hill sometimes. Bigger hills even worse. It's a job that a lot of people want, or think they want. But if you're keen give it a shot. Maybe hit up a couple places around you to give yourself a better shot.

if there's any smaller hills around you without a proper park, try volunteering to help with theirs. Pretty much even the smallest mountains have a shitty flatbar lying around at this point, and no one around to set it up/maintain them. Whatever experience you get from this would help you stand out from others with no experience, plus volunteer work always looks good on a resume.

of course if you get a job with a real park crew thats a priority but I feel like I gained a lot more doing shit on my own for a season or two than I would have just starting as a rake monkey at a larger resort.

RIP to this guy :(

Boss wasn't as big a fan as I was. Luckily we got to hit it a few days at the end of last season after I finished it. Not sure if it even made it in the snow this year. That said it became something else I guess so at least it's a rail which beats going back to being old pieces of steel lying under a building.

Always wanted to build that rail somewhere, stoked I got the chance even though it lived a short life.

a short rant: our park literally has one jump, and it's a terrible shape, doesn't even get built until the season's practically over (poor snow quality/high temps), is at a bizarre angle on the hill, and always ices over bc of the warm daytime/cold night temps

My home mountain's park crew has an obsession with corrugated pipes, instead of the many good rails they have to set up, all that gets set up is corrugated pipes. Our opening day was yesterday, and all that was set up was one shotgun rail and 3 corrugated pipes.

The terrain park staff at my home mountain gets paid to do nothing it's kinda crazy. They blew snow all week and all that was set up this weekend was 2 corrugated pipes set up like a flat down, without a kicker on. I think that it's because management there is the guy who runs the terrain park's parents, it's kind of ridiculous how many features they have that aren't used.
If you look at their website you can see all the stuff that they used to make before the old terrain park manager left, http://www.tusseymountain.com/terrain-park/ The guys who run the terrain park now worked there then, so it's kinda confusing why something passable isn't being made now.

It's still early season, otherwise though, some people are just lazy or incompetent. Idk the situation there I'm just speaking of the industry in general. You could give some people all the snowmaking budget, cat time, features, crew, etc and they wouldn't build a good park. Some people are lazy, some people just have no idea what a good park looks like or how to make it happen.

Luckily this is far more rare these days. Some of the parks that were still out there 10-15 years ago were mindblowingly sketch. There has been a trend at least the last few years of standardization. Some parks are better than others, a few parks are still sketch, but for the most part everything kind of resembles a park.

I get the frustration though, especially if you can't really ski anywhere else. The local hill I rode had no park and would sometimes kick you off for the day for building jumps. Shit was whack. If things don't change the only real options are to ride someplace else, or join the crew and try and make things legit.

Kinda bummin on our mountains insta at the moment. Last year I took a few pictures and sent them in to try and get it rolling. Nothing happened with them, and never heard back. Finally a month and a half later found out they couldn't be used because no helmets. Ok, I mean, a little bummer that info wasn't up front but whatever. Why did it take a month + for that though.

We posted 2 pics of opening weekend last year, same rider same feature. Dope trick but super dark, not the most inviting pics. Whatever, at least we posted something. Then we posted a throwback to a previous season of same rider. Sick video actually but on jumpline we never even had enough snow to build last year. Then a not terrible picture of a usasa setup. Then a picture of a someone on our rainbow box.

That was it. THAT WAS IT. Full season, nothing. If we did a rebuild or opened a new park and I was off or didn't groom it for a few nights, I'd know more about what other mountains I've never been to had in their parks than what we had.

This year we posted a decent photo building an early season hike park. Still dark af but whatever. Then a picture of half a box, and another rail sitting there mentioning we were building another park.

"I'll be honest, this picture is not motivating. Somewhat discouraging actually"

"This picture makes me want to go to Boreal... Step your game up"

These aren't even haters imo, I feel the same way. If I saw that I'd strongly consider riding one of the other sick parks in the area.

We had a pretty fun park the last 2 weeks while making snow on out big parks. 0 pictures, 0 videos. From it's build to tear down not one post about it. Saturday we opened out main park. It's a big deal for local park riders. Not one post about the build, not one post about any features in there, not one post that it even exists. We also opened part of our smaller park that runs next to it. We have bigger jumps right now, we have the small options, it's looking way better than last season between the 3 parks.

Insta is free advertising. I know what other mountains around here have in their parks even though I haven't ridden most of them this season. Why? Because they fucking post about it.

Idk. Some mountains won't let them use social media for the park. I get that. But if you have an account you can use, and don't it's just laziness. Things like these help parks slide off the radar over time imo.

Great way to build hype, keep people updated on the setup and bring people in for the weekend vs the other local parks. We get a lot of freedom with it which is dope, pretty much our only rule is keep it PG and try and make sure the features look good if the park is open when the pic is taken.

Meanwhile at our sister resort the park insta got taken over by marketing when the guy who was good at media left, and they won’t let anyone who knows what they’re doing have the password. @parkcrewhatesyou roasted them pretty good for posting pics of side jumpers a few weeks ago

That shit makes me rage. If you don't know anything about parks you shouldn't be running a park page. Gore mountain in NY had a girl in pink wedging off the side of the takeoff to a 3' tall down rail as their photo of the day once.

I think decent analogy that they could understand is being like your parents trying to throw a high school party. They might be cool and all, but they're out of touch as fuck with what the younger generation is doing. Unless it was so bad that it was cool they'd probably fail hard.

That said, imo even if you know nothing about parks you should be able to at least post a mediocre or better photo once in a while. People spend shittons of money advertising. Something like insta is probably more useful than almost anything else when it comes to parks, and it's fucking free.

Thinking of going rogue and posting and illegitimate insta for the parks. I don't ride enough to know errrbody, but even some alright people doing some alright things is good enough imo. At least then people would see we have a park.

We have 7 parks plus a stash park, a pipe, and a riglet park. That takes a hell of an investment to build and maintain. You build it for people to come, spend money, and give you a ROI. If something is free, everyone is using, and looking at for updates it's mindblowing not to utilize.

Running 11 park cats, night hand crew, day crew, all the features etc.

It's wild to not put a little effort into promoting it.

Thanks for the advice, the hill i go to is the only one within an hour and half and I can't drive yet so I'm just waiting till I can drive so I can get a Big Boulder pass.

BB crushes it. Maybe see if any of your friends who drive can take ya for some gas $. I know the feels though. Hopefully the local place does decent this season. Give them some constructive feedback if you can and maybe offer to help with some builds if they're struggling.

theabortionatorKinda bummin on our mountains insta at the moment. Last year I took a few pictures and sent them in to try and get it rolling. Nothing happened with them, and never heard back. Finally a month and a half later found out they couldn't be used because no helmets. Ok, I mean, a little bummer that info wasn't up front but whatever. Why did it take a month + for that though.

We posted 2 pics of opening weekend last year, same rider same feature. Dope trick but super dark, not the most inviting pics. Whatever, at least we posted something. Then we posted a throwback to a previous season of same rider. Sick video actually but on jumpline we never even had enough snow to build last year. Then a not terrible picture of a usasa setup. Then a picture of a someone on our rainbow box.

That was it. THAT WAS IT. Full season, nothing. If we did a rebuild or opened a new park and I was off or didn't groom it for a few nights, I'd know more about what other mountains I've never been to had in their parks than what we had.

This year we posted a decent photo building an early season hike park. Still dark af but whatever. Then a picture of half a box, and another rail sitting there mentioning we were building another park.

"I'll be honest, this picture is not motivating. Somewhat discouraging actually"

"This picture makes me want to go to Boreal... Step your game up"

These aren't even haters imo, I feel the same way. If I saw that I'd strongly consider riding one of the other sick parks in the area.

We had a pretty fun park the last 2 weeks while making snow on out big parks. 0 pictures, 0 videos. From it's build to tear down not one post about it. Saturday we opened out main park. It's a big deal for local park riders. Not one post about the build, not one post about any features in there, not one post that it even exists. We also opened part of our smaller park that runs next to it. We have bigger jumps right now, we have the small options, it's looking way better than last season between the 3 parks.

Insta is free advertising. I know what other mountains around here have in their parks even though I haven't ridden most of them this season. Why? Because they fucking post about it.

Idk. Some mountains won't let them use social media for the park. I get that. But if you have an account you can use, and don't it's just laziness. Things like these help parks slide off the radar over time imo.

They don't want any of the VR resorts to have social media. I had heard Wilmot's was scrapped asap.

I totally get the no helmet thing if it's an employee in uniform but if it was a guest with no helmet that's pretty weak.

An uncurated social media page is a far greater liability than most realize. During the discovery phase of any awsuit the first thing they're going to do is archive ever single social media post with a hashtag related to that resorts park. They'll use every single possible thing against you and all they have to do is convince a jury that doesn't want to be there anyway.

It's a shame that that's the world we live in now but it is. We just can't get a way with the stuff we used to.

Yeah I know a lot of mountains got rid of theirs. The shitty thing is we have one, are allowed to use it, it's just not getting utilized. I think that's the worst thing. We could, we just don't.

It was all non employees, I get it, but it was kind of lame to not even find that out for weeks. Just got a new camera after some doucher broke into my car and stole all my shit in Sac this summer. Might take it out tomorrow and try and get a couple pictures.

Idk, I think it just comes down to taking pride in where you work. I got an offer last year for $3 more an hour 5 min closer to home but didn't move. I don't mind anything not being the best ever, but things should be the best possible within reason.

That said, when I was going up to check guns the other morning they had a few rails installed already and they had a creative feature going up top. Hoping I can cut ties with snowmaking in the next week and get back to parks.

I hear ya man. Things haven't changed much since you were here. No social media, no events, no quantifiable data gathered about our park guests at all. We'll literally talk to anyone we can to try and get some feedback but most people just kinda put their head down and do their park lap thing. It's a shame we can't do more.

We have some ski school boxes open at the bottom now and we'll be opening 101 on Wednesday so that's pretty neat I guess.

How come you're making snow? Short on snowmakers?

Area 51 is, well you know, the tits. One thing they tried out a couple years ago that I loved but they kinda let off was having some kind of super dorky feature. Boxzilla: like 12 boxes stacked together, for example. It looks more and more like Olympic slopestyle kind of features. I really want them to slap down some kind of nerdy over the top "Psssssssshhhh what mad man designed that shit? 360 that ridiculous fucking thing, pussy bitch" hits again.

one of the diggers was telling me management wouldn't let them build that mini park any bigger, which is bullshit because they could have a park with 6 or 7+ rails that you could lap on little cat.

Yeah,short staffed and hours. We have a 6 swing and 5 grave park ops so wasnt much for hours when we had a hikeable park open last month and then a longer but still short park last 2 weeks.

Now our biggest park is open, small park partially open, bottom park still going, and more soon hopefully. Pretty over snowmaking atm lol.

Will you guys put some of the bigger features in your other parks or are they done?
