Best Way to Learn/Do a Backflip on Snow

I was just wondering what was the easiest way to learn a backflip on skis. I am really progressing and I want to get into bigger tricks.

hey man, prob wont get many answers here-- this is the site discussion forum, where people discuss the actual website itself

but there have been tons of good threads on backies... learning backies is a classic part of so many skiers' progress. id suggest googling site:newschoolers.com + backflip or how to backflip (or whatever-- try different stuff) and go through tons of threads that have been on here. lots of great responses. also feel free to ask me or others specifics questions

Learn backflips on a trampoline or diving board and get super comfortable with them, then go build a jump into pow and send it.

you gotta do one on a tramp and then it’s really up to you to fully send

1. tramp
2. air bag or water ramp are the safest ways but most older guys had to learn dubs and trips on snow without this new stuff.
if you don't have access or the funds (its expensive) nothing like a good pow jump or slushy landing.

if you have a half pipe available best place to learn is out of the bottom of the halfpipe. Gives you a good boost and very low consequences

I don't go to a mountain that's big in park which sucks so I don't have a half pipe but usually they do have some nice sized jumps which I learned to do a front flip off of last year

It seems to me there are two types of people in this world.

The 1st can backflip on their first attempt, not nessacarily land it - but still understand the timing, pop and rotation involved.
The 2nd does not understand and will fling themselves into the air and most likely land on their back or neck. You see many of these people every winter and it's pretty much always hilarious

There's only one way to find out which one YOU are mate, just find some deep powder or airbag and give it go.

practice on tramp. if you're a gymnast or diver or something make sure you are throwing your shoulders instead of initiating the rotation with your knees. then just build a SUPER poppy jump that almost feels like your hitting a wall then just chuck it and commit. if you're confident and practiced well you'll get it in 2-3 tries.

I would say decking out on a hip is better.

With a pipe you have the angled wall. Still good for it, but a hip you can come straight out. If you're only 4 or 5 feet high in the air you the flat landing won't even bother you. And you aren't traveling/landing on a steep surface so even if you catch tips you just fall over.

And most mountains don't build pipes anymore so they aren't that accessible.

great thread. im sure all of us remember clearly the feeling of KNOWING you can do it but having to build up the balls to try it first. had to be one of my best skiing memories when i first tossed one and realized it's no big deal. respect for making this thread and i agreed with nearly everything you said

ill emphasize that you need to POP and set the flip with your hips. it's all in the hips, it's all in the hips...

find a little jump you like with a soft landing and go for it if you know you have it


also...much easier than fronts, that's for sure

Alright if it's easier than a front I should land it easily because I can already stomp a front flip easy. Thank you everyone for the input this really helps, now I just need snow.

yeah man also worth noting that it's also easier (well, in most people's minds... we're all unique snowflakes of course) because the shape of the jump helps you set the flip unlike during a fronty. think about when someone flies off a jump out of control, it throws you into the backseat. doing a backy is basically popping and letting your body do the most natural thing it could on a jump. glorious, simple, amazing trick. have fun!

A lot of times people build a jump that's way sketchier than anything you see in the park. Obviously the pow is the advantage, but if the jumps ghetto, it doesn't necessarily make it any easier.

I guess it depends how good you are at flipping in general. If you have no idea what you're doing, powder is def the way to go. Someone who decides to try a flip randomly, sometimes they huck it all crazy to the side, or don't commit.

If you can throw a flip on a trampoline, diving board, etc comfortably you're probably going to land or come damn close on the first try even. After the initial "Holy fuck I sent it" flip you have the idea of how it works with skis and then hike up and do another one.

If you pick the right jump, understand how to flip, and commit, the chances for success are pretty massive.

I told mingg not to do it on a sketchy jump. Mingg tried it on a sketch jump. Mingg broke. Granted it was slush, not bottomless powder but still.
