I'm looking for a new pair of skis for a trip to CO in december. I already have a pair of salomon nfx lab skis for groomers and park, but I am looking for a pair of wider big mountain / pow skis. I am 6' 200 lbs and like to ski hard and fast. I want this new pair to float well in pow but I,m not sure how wide is going to be too wide for me to traverse groomers to the lifts. What would be a good width??
I think something in the 110-115 range would fit the bill best and be versatile enough to handle most powder barring a huge dump and then still be fun if the snow is less than stellar. That being said I have no problem with my 120 underfoot but it's overkill most of the days unless you're in the fresh stuff.
I was in Colorado skiing Vail last January and I only had my Nordica OMWs so after a big snowfall I rented some Atomic Backland 109s which are just like the Bentchetlers but in a skinnier waist. They absolutely shredded. Carved really well on groomers, could still hit a bit of park too. And they floated no problem in the fresh foot of pow. I found them to be a great all round ski but definitely more pow oriented. Hope this helps.
I'm sort of in your same boat. I'm 6'3," 215. So with the Backlands, I'm only finding 180s as the longest available from last season anyway. are those to short for an intermediate powder skier who is also learning bowls? I'm also looking at the 102's
