Binding Freedom / Quiverkiller

Does anyone actually use these systems. I have looked in to them for 3 years but have never actually commited to putting them on some skis. Hoping to run some Look pivots and dynafit bindings for the same ski.

Any insight good or bad would be appreciated. I get that the best answer is to have two skis one for inbounds and one for touring, which is what I normally end up doing. If the inserts don't rip out or have any issues with them I find it hard to not give these a trial.

The system would be ideal for my job as there's control mornings where we have to skin up (or some misery boot packing) to doing avalanche control and once that's done it's back to inbounds skiing all day.

Ive run BF on a few pairs of skis for the last year. Love them so far, it's pretty sweet being able to swap setups. I also use the CAST touring system, which I swap around to different skis depending on the day. Cool thing about that, is that I only need one set of holes for both normal pivots, and the cast plates.

Haven't had any issues with inserts backing out or stripping so far. 10/10 would use again. Also, buy the install kit that comes with the drill bit, tap, and insert tool. Very much worth the money.

Yep, I use them for my touring skis. Definitely would recommend.

Mine are a bit of a pain since I'm using them with Dynafit Demos, which take a while to get all the screws out so I don't switch them super often, but overall, I'm a big fan.

From what I've read, BF inserts are stronger. Different production process

I’ve been running BindingFreedom for a number of years, as have a bunch of the Newschoolers staff.

Honestly, I can’t imagine ever going back to mounting bindings the standard way. It seems crazy to me to need one set of bindings per pair of skis.

I love travelling with 2-3 different types of flat skis and only one set of bindings.

Havent ripped out at all on me, but I guess I’m no Sean Pettit when riding.

According to TGR Mags, BF came first and are the OG design.

Other than that, not too sure of the differences. I went with BFs since I've had good experiences with their products.

Yes. Quiver killer ripped off BF. The owner of BF is a good dude....and he's a skier.

BF also has the notch on the top of the insert to make it a little easier to get in and out. Other than that they are the same. BF might be a little cheaper.

That's what I still find crazy after years and years of snowboarding. Why do I need to buy bindings for each pair of skis?? It doesn't make any sense..

In my situation, my skis are simular waist width. The 2 skis that I'm drilling for fks/kingpins are 112 underfoot, and 118. So it's no big deal and I only need one set.

I'm also going to have the kingpins being used on a pair of 106 underfoot skis, so that might be stretching it a little on break width....but it shouldn't be too bad.

A 110mm brake can technically be used on around 95mm to 115mm skis (depends on how much switch skiing you're doing, I guess). So that's already quite the quiver. And buying extra brakes for your skis is still cheaper than buying a whole new set of bindings.

For our early prototypes we ran BF inserts to cut down on the number of pairs of bindings we needed. We definitely rate them. The notch in the top really makes it easy to get them installed. Just need to make sure you don't cross the thread you tap into the ski or you end up with a totally goosed mount.

The main difference between the BF and the QK is that the BF inserts have rolled threads instead of the cut ones on QK. The rolled threads are stronger and more durable and so will stand up to taking the screws in and out a bunch more before they become loose. Some fairly regular locktite never goes a miss though. Nothing worse than losing a screw.

Lots of great threads on the TGR forums about BF vs. QK. Seems like the general consensus is in favor of BindingFreedom, looking to put some in most of(if not all) of my skis. I primarily run Marker Royal line and have a set of CAST plates so it will be nice to be able to tour and run alpine bindings flat on the same set of skis.

What does switch skiing have to do with it?

Never happened to me but some people said they caught their brakes skiing switch when they were much wider than the skis.

Yeah you just have to be really careful to not fuck the brakes up. Its the one part which isn't really meant to be switched between skis so they're very fragile when you have them off.

Plus, you need to have one set of wide brakes, or a wide and narrow because if you try to get brakes on a wide ski that don't fit... you'll just fuck everything up.

How have you guys mounted them? Did you take it to the shop or do it yourself? I'm not confident at all about mounting anything cause i cant measure and i would guarantee i put a drill through my ski

I used a mill to enlarge the holes already there then installed the inserts myself. You can buy the install kit which comes with a drill bit that has a step on it to get that perfect depth, and a tap to put a thread into the hole. If it's a new ski or you're not using the same holes, just take it to a shop.

From what I've read, as long as the holes aren't too close you should be alright. Not sure what "too close" is though..

Is it a bad idea mount the inserts in a current drillhole? Happen to blow my old STH late last season and obviously hadn't cash for a new binding... So my solution was to take my Attacks from my Magic Js to my thinner ones. So they are now standing plugged. My others ones, Down Throwdown is the ones I'm a bit worried about, they a in excellent condition and a fucking love them as an all around ripper but they are drilled two times. Trice with insert for my Attacks and I wish to have the option to run my new Kingpins on them as well, especially since I got skins which can be use for them already.

Will get a third pair for big mountain/touring and I realize that QK will make travelling a lot easier, but how should I manage this?
Remove the bindings on my TDs and mount the inserts in the very same hole or plugg and drill new one?
Flush my idea of the Kingpin option for them or not?
Obviously I want the Kingpins on my MJs, but they don't have breaks in that width and it looks like they will point in a weird ass angel if a bend them.
Fuck my life is problematic I know.

If I understand this qyestion....it is perfectly fine to use old holes. That's actually how you are supposed to mount them in the first place. You still with a regular screw for the binding, then you bore out the hole to the proper size with a special tool to make it the correct size for the BF insert.

Seems like folks still hang on to the TGR TROLL posts of a distant past.
BF sold out ~3 years ago to a distributor. Jon @ BF was a great guy, but I'm now a big fan of the guys at QK. The owners of QK are great guys in Denver who still make locally and ski their own stuff.

The insert product is pretty much the same. I do like that QK does all the homework on setting up the new binding screw custom lengths each season, which is cool.

Has anyone tried the their rescue inserts? Seems like a nice addition to the line up and some innovation to a product that's over 20 years old - definitely better than a heli-coil!
