Who skis for fun anymore

Hello NS,
As you all may not know I ski. I mostly ski Mt Hood because I pretty much live here. If you've been to Timberline this summer you've seen me I rock a blue red and navy blue windbreaker with like a sunhat type of whatchamacallit. I'm definately not the best skier on the mountain because I don't try to be. Although if you saw me ski you're probably one of the dudes or babes that threw a few "Yeeww"s my way.
So let me cut to the real discussion. I just got done talking with a dude whos skiing is defintely respectable but not something to brag about. I talked about how much fun I had at the mountain, and invited him to come shred with me. His reply was basically "I dont know if I want to ski with you until I see you ski". I was shitting bricks. How do you see me ski if you don't want to ski. If you want a video or something you're asking the wrong guy. Why can't we just go skiing and have fun for once? Are there other douches out there like you that turn down invitations to FREE SKIING. Isn't Freeskiing just that? Isn't it about being Free at heart? Shouldn't skiing be about having fun not trying to be a showboat motherf***. I feel like this dude represents a larger demographic of skiers and snowboarders.
I understand if you are making a movie, or training for a comp., you want to make money out of skiing, and you don't want to just Ski thats cool dude. But Some of us just want to go skiing, make new friends and experiences is that Too much to ask for?

I get where you're coming from but there's definitely an intangible stoke factor that comes from skiing with someone who you know can push your comfort zone. When my college friends come to visit me in the mountains I'm cool with taking 2-3 days on blues and easy blacks because I like skiing with the homies but the rest of the time I truly enjoy skiing with my buddies who are as good or better than me because I know we're going to fucking rip.

I ski for fun and love it . I also like to learn new tricks/progress and compete.nothing feels better then landing that new trick or stomping a comp run clean. Competing makes me push my self to be better and ski harder not to beat the other kids necessarily but to be better for myself. So yeah I compete and I ski for fun.

Sounds like a tool to me but it's definitely a ton of fun to follow to someone who is more confident on there skis than you are!

Totally, I feel like the best way to learn, progress, and FSU is to get your sticks wet, by having some good old fashioned fun. Some people out there just seem a little bit too serious.Which as I said is understandable.. because some of them have a livelihood which depends upon their mastery of the sport.
I learned to ski solely on observation and experiences alone, watching videos as well as the people in front of me send some nasty tricks. Sending some on my own, somtimes without any luck but getting back up and stomping it the next time around. One of the most important concepts I have learned however is to just have fun. This concept can be applied to Life in general.
If one day I do not get to walk off the mountain after a long day of shredding I want to be able to say I died doing something that I legitimately loved to do.

Following better skiers is the only way to get better. If you keep skiing with similar levels, and especially lower level skiers, you fall into a trap of not wanting to progress/not seeing how to progress. I've been in this trap the last season (aus), and I feel like i've wasted it because I've skied with mates who aren't great, when I could have been skiing with other mates who I used to shred with. Skiing with better skiers, or skiers who just like to push themselves makes you realise so much, like how to be more creative/stylish, seeing new lines that never seemed to be there before, and just generally wanting to get better to keep up.
I would argue as well though that if you can get to the bottom at the same time, and be on the lift without waiting for each other, how good you are doesn't matter. One person could hit some drops out wide, another rip up a groomer, another run a park lap, and sure, we might not be skiing together per say, but we might decide to follow each other now and then, and we just get better than way.
At the end of the day though, if you're sharing the stoke, it doesn't matter who you're skiing with, as long as you're happy, and they're happy, we're all happy, and we'll all have a good day.

I get that, but people can be and act however they want, for me the most important thing is to have fun, if skiing wasn't an absolute blast i wouldn't do it, and don't know why anyone else would. In terms of the progression talk, you can most definitely get better without skiing with people better than you at any one specific aspect of skiing or all around, When I want to get better I usually go by myself so that I can get the most laps possible. Then in terms of seeing people better than you ski in person to get "more creative lines" to me is dumb, nothing against people who like to do that but when people try to emulate others nothing of value is really added to the sport or yourself, I know that progression recently has become very touchy topic with these crazy airbags, and people with tons of money going to camps all summer and whatever, but I think that the truest way to get better is also just to have fun and do your own thing. that got really ranty or whatever but i guess im just trying to say get stoked on skiing.

I get a certain feeling every time I ski, if you dont have that certain feeling while you ski then you're probably not having fun. Skiing is about being who you wanna be.

I feel what you're saying. I am definitely not a highly skilled park skier, and some people are like that. I always have fun though and have many nice friends to ski with from many different skill levels without shame of looking bad. It sucks when someone won't give you a chance just because they feel they're too good to ski with you. Like it doesn't matter how good you are,it's about what kind of person you are if you're looking for friends to ski with. Like if you don't want to ski with someone cool, but don't be a dick if you think you're too good to ski with someone, that's just not right.

Exactly, I can hit the same lips as this dude, slide the same rails, I do some things better than he does and he does some things better than I do. You don't see me telling him that.

If this happened in the summer, I would just forget it.... Probably some midwest dude who comes out to Hood every summer thinking he owns the place... Once you stick around and ski Timberline in the winter you will meet some awesome people and the vibes are awesome!

It sounds like the dude you're referencing has personal esteem issues. But, you are correct. The situation exemplifies the erroneous image a lot of skiers/riders try to create instead of just being a human. Being scene with the wrong person would apparently tarnish their reputation. Fuck that, just do your thing. Personally, I've got friends from ALL ends of the ability spectrum, and always manage to have a good time riding with them regardless.

Sooo yes, a lot of us do ride cuz we love it and were addicted to it. Don't let the aggro skiers bring you down. Like Beefy said, if you stick around for the winter you'll meet a good chunk of homies here for the same reason. If I see ya out there today I'll say whats up and possibly toss ya a brew. LDOH! IT'S GON BE LITTY!

Yo! Look for me up there. It's all about the fun and good times at Timberlapz. Like yesterday up there on Palmer. Everyone was having a blast. That double barrel stunt ditch was so bomber. Felt like winter vibes up there.

I can understand a guy wanting to make sure he won't be held up while skiing. Maybe he does want to wait for people or wants to make sure you push yourself.

For me, I like skiing with anyone as long as they're willing to push their boundaries. My best skiing experiences come from people I don't have to wait for and who are similar skill or better

Skiing for fun means skiing with anyone that's a cool person. I ski with them all from all levels and all ages.
When you ski with someone of lesser ability, go slower, don't ditch them, help them out a bit if you can.
We all start from the same square.
Lesser able skiers will get better if they ski with a more able person. Give and you will receive.

I completely get this. Like the night before skiing im usually pretty hyped and all that. But once im in the car driving everything just feels drained and dumb. Skiing used to be fun and exciting and now im just pissed off with everything. Idk maybe its time to call it quits with Colorado as the skiing and traffic just keeps getting worse or maybe I just need to chill out and remember that its just skiing and its better than some things.

When I made my move 20 years ago, I was thinking CO or MT. So glad I went to OR instead. I ski 135 or so days a season now for a long time and love every day. I have FUN! Can't wait to retire so I can get way more days each season.

I didn't know any skiers all throughout middle school and that is when I progressed huge amounts. Never took lessons or anything. The more you ski the better you get. Having the balls to start sending some stuff and get better really just has to do with your personality. Solo shredding can be a blast... Nobody is watching you, you can ski stupid lines and get into crashes without holding back the crew, and don't have to wait for anyone.
