voy10Even with good grades, I still have to beg my parents to ski every weekend. They're against me skiing. Any rare time I talk about anything ski related, they just get real annoyed because they're "tired of me obsessing over it". They also say "this addiction isn't healthy for you" like it's some drug addiction or something. I have to beg them to buy anything ski related on line, even though I pay for 100% of anything ski related. Anyone else's parents like this?? It's super annoying and they don't realize that Skiing's just a big part of my life.

voy10And they don't get the whole skiing thing. I asked to build a setup, they looked at me like I had 3 heads and continued to criticize me for wanting to hit rails in the summer. Ask to get my skis mounted this summer for a friends setup? "No, you can't ski in the summer! Snow doesn't fall till December!" They just don't understand much about skiing.
DIRTYBUBBLEThis is where you pull the "Guess I'll start doing drugs since I can't go skiing" trick. But don't frame it like that.naw lmao
Titus69Are they like this only with skiing? Sounds like youre not allowed to even have friends, thats pretty awful to me that they dont support your passions and almost discourage you from them. My parents support me with skiing 100% because they know that its pretty much the only thing I have that makes me truly happy.
voy10They're pretty much like that with only skiing. Like when I played baseball, I wanted to go down to the field and practice every single day during the summer. And they encouraged that. But as soon as my interests really shift to skiing in the past few years, they're kinda stingy about it. Like say if I wanted to go skiing this Saturday, and I skied the last two Saturdays, my mom gets all wierd and starts yelling at me for "this obsession of yours" and things like that.
voy10Like there was this small, 5 slope ski resort called Nemacolin, and the place is literally like 25 acres. That was like 15 mins away, and my parents were fine with me skiing there at least twice a weekend. But this past season I started going to Seven Springs more because I was tired of skiing that shitty resort. Springs is 45 mins away. And anytime I wanted to go to Springs that wasn't our school ski club trip, it was pretty hard to get them to let me go. And they didn't even have to drive me, my friend would always take me. But I bought a pass this year finally for springs, maybe that will change things a bit.

Jesse_Damn that fucking sucks dude vibes, I feel you on the pay 100% for everything though since my parents just were not financially able to pay for it.
One of my friends parents where kinda like this to him for mountain biking. They said it wasent healthy and he was extremely addicted. But then he pulled the "well would you rather I just smoke weed as well as do other drugs in the basement while playing video games instead?" And after a few times they finally supported his biking and he's sponsored now.
Titus69My guess is because they think skiing will lead you nowhere, or theres just more room to hurt yourself than in baseball. Just defend yourself next time they bitch about it, stupid that they dont let you enjoy something you clearly love.
voy10Word, man. They just don't understand that it's the only fun thing I do anymore. They're not too worried about me getting hurt tho, it's just their constant, stubborn attitude towards me "having this bad, unhealthy obsession". I don't even talk about skiing to my parents anymore so they don't get real annoyed.
Lieutenant_DanSorry, sounds like a difficult situation but in the end its your parents ignorance. You should explain to them with some really good reasoning why you enjoy skiing. Talk about how healthy it is for you, how many friends you made, your new appreciation for the environment/nature (in a non hippy way plz), and how passionate it is for you. They should support you no matter what, and having a "unhealthy obessions" for something is basically a good label to try to prevent someone to be successful. You think Tom Wallisch, Henrik Hauralut didn't have unhealthy obsessions for skiing? Of course not they prolly went skiing everyday, like you don't think Michael Jordan eat drink and sleep basketball? Same goes with everything, if you're passionate about it and dedicate a lot of time to it, most likely you will benefit or gain something out of it. Don't let your parents influence your dreams, if it makes you happy then thats all that matters.
BeefiestExperttell your parents if you they don't let you do safe, fun, healthy activities with friends then your going to go get some crack rock and start banging all the boys in the neighborhood.
So ask your parents if they rather have you look like that ^ or like this....

theabortionatorSweet jebus if this is for realz. Imo if you're using your own money and not buying drugs or weapons you should be able to do what you want.
I would just order stuff without asking. It's your money.
They sound kind of psychotic. I can understand not wanting to drive you to the hill or pay for a season pass, but how the fuck can they be mad at you for doing something active?
Would they rather you play online games while slamming mtn dew and coming out once every few days to re up on food?
voy10They're like this with only skiing. Honestly they don't mind if I ski, but they get all mad when I wanna go every weekend. It sucks. And I tried to order a new pair of skis at the beginning of this past season and they wouldn't let me, they'd get all mad whenever I asked for their credit card. So I was stuck using shitty ass 145 skis this season, and I'm 5 7
Titus69Well obviously they don't wanna spend their money on the obsession of yours that they hate, but that's just weird to me that it's only skiing with them. Are they very frugal? I imagine it's partly a money/safety thing.
voy10No I pay for all my shit, but lately they've been okay with me buying some shit because I've been grinding with cutting grass and other landscaping jobs. But before when I was broke af they wouldn't let me buy anything even though I had enough money. And take note anyone here, do landscaping and grass cutting as a summer job. It's a huge moneymaker if you can hustle a lot of yards, and you don't have to pay a dime in taxes.
Titus69Oh well you said you'd ask for their credit card...Maybe they just want you to save your money, but maybe show you're responsible and can work hard. Might have to earn more ski time doing well in school and making a lot of extra dough. I guess I don't really know, mine are completely opposite because thry know it keeps me sane and out of the house, they know it's like 1/3 of my priorities in life. They also work in the industry so I can get gear for cheap but not like a ton of stuff, I still buy my own hoodies and other small things, probably my season pass from now on too.
snowpocalypseI had to pay to play. Neither of my folks really skied. So they did not understand the whole "gear matters" thing. When I was 13 I asked for a ski coat and I got an Adidas jacket instead. From that point on I knew it was up to me. Started scraping skis at the local shop for discounts and access to the good shit. Worked my ass off all summer life-guarding and teaching swimming to buy all my own gear. My parents go me a season pass every year for my birthday, the rest was up to me. Taught me to value my own shit and work for what you really want.
voy10And they don't get the whole skiing thing. I asked to build a setup, they looked at me like I had 3 heads and continued to criticize me for wanting to hit rails in the summer. Ask to get my skis mounted this summer for a friends setup? "No, you can't ski in the summer! Snow doesn't fall till December!" They just don't understand much about skiing.just put in some effort and get good grades. it's hs.

cozzeyI’ve been fortunate enough to be able to ski every weekend cause we have a place in the mountains but my parents have been pretty strict about grades and college. A’s were the standard in my family and anything less came as a dissapointment.
So long story short my high school career was pretty dissapoingting for them.
Still though they let me buy whatever ski gear i want as long as I use my money and don’t go broke. I can’t skip class unless I want my ass beat but high school itself has been pretty traumatizing mentally for me.
