Wooden Skis

Anyone ever skied on wooden skis?

Just finished making myself a pair of solid poplar skis.

I doubt they are gonna be great for hucking cliffs or sending rails, but I figured it would be really fun to spend a day skiing on them. let me know what you think!

That's pretty cool OP. I just kinda fast forwarded through your video. Looks like a cool shape and metal edges too! Tell me more about the bases. I saw where it said you covered them in tar and then what did you do after that? Are the bases just wood or something else?

Yeah the bases are just the other side of the wood sanded down all smooth, with the pine tar on it to seal water from getting into them. I will iron some wax into it as well.

This is awesome! I was following along like hey I could probably do this until you had to make that cut to set the edges, not set up to do that.

Gotta say that's one of the coolest things I've ever seen, good job. Regardless of how they hold up definitely something to be proud of. Some clever stuff in there working with what you got.

that was cool OP, you really put a lot of work into showing the details of that process. I have always wanted to make a pair of skis, but I'm too lazy. It's a miracle I ever built my summer setup

Nice work with the classic steam press, like to know when you ski them how pine tar holds up. Just a heads up I made a pair with poplar bases a few years ago they worked but didn't last very long poplar is a super soft wood and it rips out around the edges.
