Skiing in College

i don't know but i already bought a season pass to the local resort where i'm going this fall. Its only like a 20 minute drive and for my classes the last one ends at like 4 at least for fall so i figure ill get in plenty of skiing in college. money is a different thing entirely.

You need to give us more information. At University of Utah you will be able to ski a ton, in great mountains, AND study if you are organized. Penn State, not so much. The mountains near Penn State will not be good, although it depends on what you are used to. You need to find out more about what your financial situation will be in college. How much money does your family have? Will you have to struggle and get student loans, or will your parents be able to support you nicely? Until you answer some of these questions you really won't get any good info here. Everyone is different, some people go to U of Utah and are swimming in money, meaning they can afford season passes. Others go to community college in Alabama and have little hope of skiing. I went to college in Southern California, 6 hours from Mammoth. We had a ski team, which cost $300 to join. This gave one a house to crash at in Mammoth any time during the winter. On most winter weekends there would be 15 to 20 people, so definitely college living, crashing on the floor in sleeping bags, but still fun. I went up a couple of weekends a month, and also went up for spring break and part of xmas break. I skied one of the best mountains on the continent quite a bit even though I lived by the beach. Lots of schools have similar ski teams. If you go to school at UNevada Reno, or at U of Utah, or at many places in Colorado, you will be able to do day trips, and sometimes afternoon trips, regularly. There are other places in the east, mostly in Vermont, where it is similar. There is a Penn State ski team, I don't know anything about it. The point is that lots of people ski a ton in college and have a great experience. We need more info from you.

Join a ski team at school. University of Colorado has a sick! freestyle ski team. You just need a good crew of buddies to go with and close proximity to the mountains.

take 1 extra class in the fall semester so you can take 1 less in the spring when most of the skiing happens

not all ski teams/clubs are created equal. I went to a large university in the midwest,and it was a fucking joke. I could never convince anybody to come skiing because our local hill was 45 minutes from campus.

I've been able to ski quite a lot outside of my classes. Where I go to school, the closest ski area is roughly 45 minutes away, so squeezing a few runs in after class isn't that hard.

My advice is to schedule all morning classes once the spring semester comes around so you can go skiing right after your last class. Also find some fellow skiers at school so you can all carpool together to the mountain.

This was in the midwest though not Colorado, don't make any assumptions you don't know. I am part of the Colorado freeskiing team at CU Boulder, and there are so many opportunities to get rides to the mountains during classes, you could ski at least 3-4 days if not more. You just have to be on top of school work too, but I wouldn't say that I have skied any less since I have been in college for the past 3 years.

Colleges with good skiing infrastructure in no particular order are CU Boulder, MSU, Western State Colorado, U of U, UVM, UBC, and UNR. Colleges that aren't near good mountains that have good infrastructure that I know of from friends going there are UVA and WVU, probably quite a few more but this is just from personal experience.

If you want to ski you'll make it work. College is a great test to see how you really feel about skiing. Might sound corny, but honestly, if a few extra hours of commute really stops you from skiing it's probably meant to be. I had a 3.5 hour commute up from 2 hours when I moved from CT to RI for school. My home hill is Mt Snow/Carinthia and that's where I have had a pass to forever so I sucked it up and made the commute.I went every weekend even if it was just for one out of the two days. Skiing helped keep me grounded and something to look forward to in the madness of my projects and class schedule.

University of Utah has the best opportunity for you to ski in school as you will be in Park City. As for Penn State (I'm from PA), you probably will not be able to ski a ton as you will have to travel relatively far to nearby mountains unless you're planning on skiing Tussey Mountain which is practically on campus but is complete shit in regards to skiing/park quality. If you don't bring a car, It will also be more difficult to find transportation to the mountains as opposed to University of Utah, where just about everybody skis. If you're not going to a school in a ski town, the majority of your ski season will happen over winter break. I attend the University of Maryland and get about a month and a week off for winter break. I'll still buy a season pass to my local mountain in PA and still get a ton of skiing in. Idk about PSU, but maryland has a dope ski club and we take several trips throughout the winter. At the end of the day, you've gotta decide what is best for you in regards to school, no skiing. When you find where you're comfortable, then you'll be able to make time for skiing. Good luck man

WVU is actually like 45 minutes away from Seven Springs mountain which is where Tom Wallisch grew up. Springs was also voted best park on the east coast this year by the NS park poll (i think). Still can't compare to skiing out west, but in terms of east coast skiing the mountain is sick.

That's where my home mountain is, but for everyone here, my main concern is finding a ride. I'll have the money for a pass and stuff, but if I go to Penn State, I'll go to Tussey when I can't make it to Springs or Boulder. Isn't it tough to bring a car to college because of Parking and stuff? I don't even know if my parents will let me bring a car to college. I wouldn't know how that would work either if I went somewhere across the country like U of U.

But if I were to go to Penn State Fayette, which is in my home town, i wouldn't have to pay for room and board and I could drive to class every day from my house. I'd be able to get a lot of skiing in at Seven Springs.

He really didn't make any assumptions, he just spoke about his experience. He didn't say all ski teams were that way.

Not necessarily. I went to the University of California Santa Barbara, and we were 6 hours from Mammoth. I skied at least 2 weekends a month with the ski team, and there were people going to Mammoth every weekend. We rented a house every year, that anyone could use whenever they wanted. There are other places like that.

You really must be a lame, as any good or local hill way 45mins to 2 hours away and I had no problem getting people to ride along

I would highly recommend stacking your classes on Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs so that you can ski mid-week. Weekends suck, especially in Colorado. I'm 1.5 hours away from the resorts and skied 80 days last season as a full time student so it's very manageable. If you go to U of U then you'll be able to rack up some serious days cause it's so close to the resorts

Ok then thanks everyone for the info. The real question Is if my parents will let me take a car to college.
