Mammoth Camping?

What's up everyone!

Heading to Mammoth for the first time this upcoming weekend. Was thinking of camping out in Big Pine Lakes before heading up but we would rather just camp somewhere close to the mountain so we can achieve optimal mountain time and spend a couple days in the Mammoth Lakes region.

Any recommendations for some good, remote, scenic camping spots? Trying to steer clear of people and possibly even tie in some hot springs if possible.

Also, how's the snow there right now? Is a decent amount of the mountain open?

Any recs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There is a Mammoth thread on the Teton Gravity Research forums, so I would ask this there. I don't know much about the Mammoth camping situation, but some of the people there do.

For something really close to the mountain, I'd check out Shady Rest Campground. For something a bit further away, I heard the usual fishing camp sites on the Owens river are way empty this year because the river is running too heavy for there to be good fishing. Hope this helps.

I'd look into the Bear situation. Sounds like you will want to know the proper bear rules for storing your food such as a bear can or whatever. (Some people I met said it is the law but IDK.) Honestly I was too sweaty and bonked from skiing so I opted to pay for a bed and shower. I'm glad I did because I didn't do any research on the bears and I just saw this about a bear breaking into a Mercedes at Mammoth. http://unofficialnetworks.com/2017/07/07/bear-poops-in-mercedes-parked-overnight/ I skied with a guy that said he always camps in his car so it must be fine if you know what you are doing.

I'm somewhat familiar (or as familiar as you can be, I guess) when it comes to bears after living in Tahoe for a few years, so we'll bag our food and everything appropriately.

Owens River sounds rad. I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks!
