skiermanNo, just a shift in how the site was run. For a while they allowed n00bs to run rampant, constantly posting unfunny internet bullshit humor you'd find on 4chan. It ran off all the quality members because they were sick of that stupid bullshit. Oh and the content fucking sucks.
casualI definitely hear what you're saying and agree to an extent, but I think the decline of NS was somewhat inevitable. NS used to basically have a monopoly as THE place to have your ski content recognized and was really the only place skiers could "congregate" digitally and hash shit out.
I definitely think Instagram, Facebook, twitter, YouTube whatever else has siphoned off traffic that otherwise would've brought people here. But I also agree with your point that at one point the site made some miscalculations in terms of how to handle content and the forums.

skiermanPinkbike was essentially the same thing as NS but they're still one of the most popular sports sites out there.... sooo yeah that theory about FB and Youtube is horseshit. You can only go so far giving zero incentive for people to post quality content.

I think they were kind of cool kids in a sense though because back then there were so many more active members of the community and the mods were generally chosen from the most active and legit members on the site so the mods tended to be pretty damn cool.
I mean the nature of being a mod sort of automatically makes you a fucking dork by definition but you know what I mean.
