Coloradoskier03Go to Jackson, cheap housing on the outskirts.
MiclovinReno is rad and is starting to get big. Strongly recommend moving out here, you can't beat everything tahoe has to offer winter or summer
hot.pocketNah Reno sucks and Tahoe is terrible year-round, don't move here.
Coloradoskier03Go to Jackson, cheap housing on the outskirts. Good skiing and lots of jobs there. It will be nice to still be close to CO.
mikemacFalse. Unless you want to live 60 minutes away, or in Idaho housing in jackson is anything but cheap and plentiful. Only a handful of people have manage to hang on to their old school cheap ski bum housing but for the most part all the crappy houses are being knocked down in the lots are being sold for $2 million to second homeowners. What basic normal apartments there are pretty much all go for 900 a room these days. Like I said a few people are hanging on to rooms for four to $600 but for someone looking to move to town without connections you could pretty much guarantee you won't find anything like that.
I love this place to death but it's getting more and more expensive all the time and the guest clientele is getting swankier and swankier every year. That's great for making money in restaurants and such you can do really well here bartending or serving and getting all day to ski which is awesome but the housing situation is just getting worse and worse all the time.
The skiing is incredible it's truly some of the steepest and deepest and most gnarly terrain you could ever find at a resort. the side country off of the tram is basically Heli skiing and the touring options in Teton Pass and grand Teton national Park are incredible. That being said, it's dangerous and people die every year. But if you're looking to really get into backcountry, I'd say this is really the #1 spot in the lower 48s.
Depending on how you like to ski, you might be bummed to find out there's really no park to speak of here. They axed the big park last year to make more intermediate terrain, and the park crew did the best they could with "medium" (read kiddie) park and the stashe parks, but no good park flow tbh. Gotta hit up Targhee to hit a decent jump.
Bachelor is friggin dope, great park and great zones off the backside. I was only there in April but I heard summit lift doesn't run during storms so idk what the deal is with that. Also bend is a super cool city with lots of housing options, dispensaries, and good nightlife. Most housing would be 20 minutes or less from bachy. Don't know anything about Tahoe housing but the skiing sure looks fun!
Sorry for the mega post but I was at work and bored and this new app is great so that's my 25 cents
DieselChevysDoesn't Reno have a high crime rate?

MiclovinNo but we have hookers

Coloradoskier03Jesus the housing part was a joke
SofaKingSickThese are some fuckin great answers. I ski bummed in Tahoe and am a walking ad for squalpine but damn if I'm not jealous of all of these posts haha
dan4060I did my ski bum years in Tahoe too. I skied Squaw everyday for half a decade before blowing my knee out and going to grad school. I absolutely loved it, but I left more than 10 years ago and things have certainly changed. Housing was never cheap, but I'm sure it is much worse now. That being said, the terrain is awesome and the snow is usually plentiful, although they did go through a 5 year drought. One advantage Squaw had over Jackson is that when I was there Squaw never closed before Memorial Day, while Jackson closes early due to a forest service agreement or something like that. April is a great month in Tahoe, May too, it would bum me out to live in Jackson and have them close in early April, which is what I believe it usually is. Maybe a local can correct me on that.
I ski weekends now, 30 to 40 days a year, almost all at Mammoth. I love Mammoth, but if I had the choice I would take Squaw. Both have there advantages, I could spend pages comparing the two, but unless it is a really bad season I would prefer Squaw. I don't know how Squaw's park is. The park was okay when I was there, but not great.
I have heard some not so great things about Tahoe from my weekender bay area buddies and from my local friends who never left. Squaw is more crowded than it used to be because of all the cheap passes. Storm day pow days where only the lower mountain opens are an absolute shit show, much worse than they used to be. When I was there a full season pass was 1200 if you bought it in July, 1600 if you bought it later. The cheap passes might seem nice but they make the mountain much more crowded. It used to be that weekenders had to ski at least 30 days a year to bring the cost down to 40 dollars a day, this sent lots of weekenders to Sugar Bowl or Alpine. Now Squaw is so cheap that more weekend warrior types are buying Squaw passes. Also, I have heard that sometimes they use Alpine as more of a crowd control mountain, meaning they don't open as much as they should. I really wish Squaw had not purchased Alpine if this is the case. I should add that I don't know this for a fact, it is just what I have heard. On a positive note, the village has supposedly brought more women to party in Olympic Valley, although it is still a ski town so keep your expectations low.
If you get even an average season Squaw is tough to beat. I have a great life now, but sometimes I miss my years living up there. If I were you I would try to get a job waiting tables in Tahoe City at one of the nice restaurants, the money is good and you can ski all day.
Good luck.
dan4060I did my ski bum years in Tahoe too. .
Profahoben_212God I love you're stoke for tahoe/squaw. Sums up my feelings and life right now.
Also yeah....alpine is where a lot of locals go on the weekends during the winter. Spring and weekdays at squaw are still A+.
.
gbolai've spent my fair share in bend and tahoe. originally from bend, i can say say bachelor is by far my favorite mountain. bend is also such a sick town. good vibes out there. but i've been living in the bay are for about 8 years and i have fallen in love with tahoe. reno absolutely blows, but if you are in the mountains you'll have a good time. i mainly ski sierra and squaw. you can't beat squaws terrain but sierra is a bomb ass local spot. its got a good park and some all star terrain. i'm currently torn apart between sierra (south shore) and squaw (north shore), hard to decide which one i like more. do you have any idea where you'd live in tahoe? north or south shore?
CUSHKOMAI've only skied south shore tahoe (Kirkwood and Heavenly) but I know theres so much more to be seen and skied in that area. As far as what type of skiing I'm looking for I like it all; park, pow, trees, steeps, bc, ususally dependent on the conditions. Haven't really spent time in Reno but I heard its the most feasible place to live in terms of cost of living. Bend seems a little more up my alley in terms of what I'm looking for in a city, heard a lot of great things even though I've still never spent time there though. Obviously there'd be a lot more in terms of skiing if I lived near Tahoe, but I feel like I could see myself living in Bend over Reno.
Profahoben_212Reno is sick. Majority of the people who say it sucks don't live there....not sure what more you could ask from a city....cheap housing, close to an insane amount of outdoors, insane amount of skiing, lots of jobs, good nightlife....etc etc etc.
SofaKingSickit's hot as shit during the summer tho
snomasterJackson housing is a bitch. And traffic is getting worse on roads
bongslut420The real estate situation in Reno is not as good as it once was. We've had enormous job & university growth over the past 2-3 years but momentum is just getting started on new housing construction. Housing supply is very limited and, though still definitely cheaper than Jackson, has become much more expensive over the past year. If you lock into a lease right now while demand is high, you're probably going to end up paying a supply scarcity premium on top of what the rental is actually worth.
Reno isn't as bad as people make it out to be for the most part. The downtown core is still dirty and mostly vacant, but the areas outside of downtown are seeing a lot of change for the better. Spend some time around the river during an event or just a nice summer day and it's pretty chill.
I work at Squalpine, and I can tell you that they made a killing this last season because it was a total fucking shitshow every weekend for months on end. Even during April, the weekends would see even minor chairlifts loading just about every single chair during operating hours. The amount of shitty, entitled bay area clientele increased by quite a bit. Most of the bay-areas and tourists are pleasant (if not a bit clueless), but there are enough of them that make it their sole purpose to let everyone around them know how displeased they are that the world isn't revolving around their existence, that it brings the vibe down pretty much every busy weekend.
With that being said, I think a big factor in the crowd increase this season was the fact that we had four drought seasons in a row. The past years, while a shitshow during the holidays, weren't nearly as bad as this year in terms of crowds.
The terrain in Tahoe is some of the most varied lift-accessed terrain in the country. Between Alpine and Squaw you can ski just about any "type" of terrain that exists, and some of the best of it at that. The terrain is what keeps me at Alpine, personally, despite how much more commercial it's becoming. Spring skiing is second to none here and my favorite part of the season. The park game at Squaw is decent, everything is well built, well maintained, and mostly well placed, but also a bit un-innovative. The most creative things they have are those features where it looks like they glued a bunch of boxes and rails together and then stuck the whole thing on the hill at a slight angle. Some 2009 shit. I prefer getting wavy with the boys and a couple of tall boys rather than hitting huge shit so maybe I'm just not the intended audience. Basically I can't actually ski park good so I want a holy-bowly or a quarter pipe so I can pretend I can do stuff.
One more thing to add if you do come to Tahoe and want to ski park a lot, get a Boreal pass. They're cheap as fuck, Boreal runs like 9 AM-9 PM during the winter IIRC, their park is better than Squaws, and it's one of THE most laissez-faire mountains I've ever been to. The tolerance for belligerency at Boreal is much higher than Squalpines (which is already pretty high for a major destination resort) as long as you're not hurting anyone. It can get pretty packed during the holidays though since it's not very big.

DingoSeanJesus... you commuted all the way from Reno to work at Squaw? And here i'm bitching about my hour+ commute from Truckee. Yikes.
Reno isn't as bad, but cmon dude.. It's still not that great, and it's by no means a ski town. May as well live in Sacramento at that rate.
I'll give this much though.. Reno has Mt. Rose, and you can ditch the aforementioned bay area fucks that way, and get the same terrain without dealing with the gongshow that comes in on 80 and 50 on weekends... and it's way cheaper (and had the most snow in the basin last year)
The crowd increase also had to do with Squaw and Alpine not being prepared to take on so many people with a small parking lot, all while marketing the shit out of themselves to the surrounding area and selling lift passes at a rate to compete with Northstar, when they should realize they're better than that... They sold a metric ton of seasons passes and it became a downright mess. Squaw also bottlenecks down to the base, and when the upper mountain is constantly on hold.. oh my god... "fun times" ensues. Squallywood has become a place for shitty uptight people who already ruined Marin to ruin even more things.
In any case, it's way too expensive to live in Tahoe anymore unless you sell your soul or have a job where you can work remotely.
Profahoben_212Hey man believe what you want about reno....bit there is a reason a lot of people love it. And I'm not gonna argue about why that is.
Also I have to agree with the squaw shooting themselves In the foot. Insane snow made SF fucks think it was the only year ever to go ski....and squaw keyed in on that. Absolute stupid lack of parking and roadways made it stupid on weekends....thank God they are building 4 more hotels and completely disregarding the parking problem right???
But I don't get the competitive pricing? 170 bucks for a day ticket is competitive? When did that become the norm. I mean I guess... but if competitive tickets were the reason for their issues then Homewood would be swimming in the money with their 50 dollar day tickets.
Issue stems from tahoe being SF douchebags wet dream. Business men selling out tahoe and a city wishing they were cooler than they really are and having way to much money to spend. Gotta love people who are willing to spend insane amounts of money to pretend they are outdoorsy for a weekend at a time.
The referenced post has been removed.
DingoSeanI'd be down to get some land on the mt rose highway side someday for sure... I hear there's some sick trails on that end.
mthoodshredderBachelor, Bend is a great town with tons of places to live, won't find rent problems like in other mountain towns, also more jobs then just the ones at bachelor back in town, Bachelor is only 25 minutes from Bend too
Corey_O132Just a heads up Jackson has a shit Park alot of the time. Atleast when I went there it was desolate.
treebeardyou're doing it wrong
