Skate deck rails

Are skateboard deck rails just trendy or are they actually useful? I've seen a lot of people using them so eh why not try them? Anybody have anything to say about em?

they let you boardslide just about anything and they preserve the graphic on your board. Trendy? yes. Useful? kind of.

I've had them for like two years now. I like them. Lipslides in bowls and on mini ramps are super slick and speedy, And any sort of boardslide on rails is basically like tony hawk pro skater physics where you speed up while you slide. It took a few sessions to get over the super slick feeling but I like it now.

I literally always thought it was just so you didnt scratch up the graphic, I'm now realizing that because the board is convex, there is an extremely small part that is actually sliding on a surface (higher possibility of rocking/sliding out), but put a rail or two in and you have 2 contact points, making it so you don't rock/slip out as easy. When these first came out it was not especially common for boards to be CONCAVE. So it was for grabs/sliding, and not scratching your board. Just like the lappers, copers, skid plates, etc. All that shit went out the door as kick flips and shit became more popular. Funny to see them come back.

i know its concave on top but I'm talking about the bottom, if you're looking at where its sliding, thats convex

You actually slide a lot quicker with them. It's two points, but it's two pretty thin points of UHMW or whatever very slippery plastic they're made of as opposed to a broad area of higher friction wood. It actually took me a bit to get used to how slick it is. Slipping out is a bit easier because they're so slick, until you get used to it. But the board doesn't rock as much on rails.
